The art of observation. When you begin working as a vet nurse you must learn quickly how to observe your patients. They cannot tell us how the feel so we must become accustomed to using our own gut feeling to tell if something is not right. From slight changes to breathing patterns that could lead to cardiac arrest, an abdominal swelling that could lead to a torsion or even facial grimacing that shows us they are in pain, we have to look at the subtle indications they are trying to tell us. It’s our purpose as nurses to try to pre empt a condition from getting worse. It’s now a natural habit I have and I use it in day to day life looking at the animals I mind at SaltyDogs 🐾

Let’s talk vaccines.. Did you know that your routine vaccine for your dog covers 8 diseases? Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo virus, Parainfluenza and 4 strains of Leptospirosis. Pretty impressive from a tiny vial. I remember seeing my first Leptospirosis case in a puppy, vomiting, lethargy, weakness and severe muscle pain and sadly the pup did not make it. It is zoonotic which means humans can get it and these diseases are alive and well in our environments. Puppies have weak immunities so must get two vaccines 3 to 4 weeks apart, adult dogs vet their vaccine once a year. 🐾

Here at SaltyDog we offer a specialist service in that we only take one to two dogs at a time to ensure they get adequate exercise and attention. We ask that all dogs are vaccinated, up to date with parasite treatments and are registered with a vet 🐾
