How can I help my dog lose weight?
Stage 1- Ascertain whether your dog is overweight and if necessary, consult your vet practice. Remember-
• You should be able to feel the outline of your dog's ribs without excess fat covering.
• You should be able to see and feel your dog's waist, and it should be clearly visible when viewed from above.
• Your dog's belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side.
Stage 2- What weight is your dog and what weight should it be? The most important thing is to know the ideal weight for your breed of dog. Below is a link to a website listing common breeds and their ideal mature weight range.

Stage 3- Fed your dog a diet formulated to help reduce weight. This will be a lower calorie diet formulated to help your dog feel satisfied. It is crucial to weight out the recommended amount of food for your dog based on its ideal mature weight. If you give your dog treats, then reduce the amount fed in its bowl accordingly.

So what if my dog is over weight?
As dogs get older, they often start to manifest underlying health conditions. These can be exacerbated if your dog is too heavy. It is well known that dogs which are too fat have more health issues than those which are thinner. The following list gives some examples of conditions which are worse in overweight pets
• Arthritis
• Diabetes
• Pancreatitis
• Heart disease
• Respiratory distress
• High blood pressure
• Cancers

Is my dog overweight?
We all become accustomed to our own pets and hate to think that they are too heavy due to us killing them with kindness! Unfortunately, half the dogs in the country are overweight. Neutering dogs at an early age has many health advantages but the downside is that neutered pets are more prone to weight gain
Here are a few tips on assessing your dogs weight:
• You should be able to feel the outline of your dog's ribs without excess fat covering.
• You should be able to see and feel your dog's waist, and it should be clearly visible when viewed from above.
• Your dog's belly should be tucked up when viewed from the side.

So hard to believe that Riley didn’t get any applications. So many puppies from unscrupulous breeders will be bought for Christmas presents and gorgeous dogs like Riley will sit in shelters around the country waiting for families.

Riley is a fabulous girl. She’s smaller than a lab but has lots of Labrador traits. Great around people including children. Great around other dogs and good on the lead. She’s housetrained, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Any family would be lucky to have this dog as their pet. She’s loving and affectionate, just an all round great girl. Riley isn’t living with a cat but she doesn’t bark at or chase them .

If you are interested in adopting her please fill in the attached form. Riley is almost two years old.

The Puppy That Nobody Wants

It’s rare that this happens and we struggle to come to terms with it when it does. We have posted this gorgeous puppy a few times but he still doesn’t have a home😭

Little Jack came in to us with his three siblings when they were found on the side of the road starved and frozen.

The other three got a home but this little scrap is still in foster. He’s doing great and getting well socialised but he would love a home of his own for Christmas.

Jack is used to kids and being around other dogs. He’s going on four months and he is a Boxer X. Hard to say what other breed. All we know is that he’s a dote and he doesn’t deserve to still be waiting.

If you are sincere about wanting to adopt Jack please fill in the attached form. (A lot of people applied and then ignored our messages)

Someone should be home most of the day and preferably no toddlers in the home.

Hi,

I am just wondering if you could please share a photo of our cat who is missing from the Clogherboy/Killererin area of Tuam since 31/10/2024.

We are new to the Clogherboy/Killererin area as we recently moved house and we fear the cat has gotten lost and possibly making her way back to Abbert. she is very timid and probably hiding in open fields or sheds, she is 4 years old and spayed but not wearing a collar.

Meet our lovely, united spaniels Megan&Tara. Megan is a gentle cocker spaniel about 7 years old and Tara is an active springer spaniel 4 years old. These two dogs were found abandoned on a bog in a shocking state, but thankfully both have made a great recovery and are now ready to look for their forever home. There is a special bond between these two dogs and they would love a home together. Tara is always watching out for Megan and they curl up together in their crate at night. Both are housetrained and crate trained, Megan walks really well on the lead whereas Tara can be a bit excited at first, but she’s improving.
We would really love to find a home for these best friends together, but if we can’t they would need homes with another dog for company. Both are vaccinated, neutered and microchipped.
If you can offer there girls a loving home, please complete a dog adoption application. Link below. A secure garden is a must and children over 10.
