We are going to miss this woman ! Sarah was our office super star diligently getting the paperwork done in the background and helping out in a vet nurse capacity. She never left a stone unturned and was always willing to help. She has moved to Australia with her boyfriend and we are all going to miss her but happy that she’s embarking on a new adventure. To show our appreciation Dr Sue bought Sarah tickets for the Melbourne Cup to say thanks … seats close to the finish line ! We have just received some photos :-) Best of luck Sarah and Dan :-)

Dr Sue had a great catch up with Vetembryo Yannie Spanner and Emma Lorenzen this morning. Their OPU and ICSI results are proving to be within the top of the European market and their support to SES Equine Veterinary Services to date has been second to none.

Urgent attention required

This week the IEVA committee has written to the Minister for Agricultural to outline our concerns about the proposed changes in legislation concerning prescription and distribution of POMs.

As discussed in the letter 'The Irish Equine Veterinary Association have significant concern regarding the introduction of a Statutory instrument that not only is in stark contrast to One Health guidelines and EU Directives, but potentially undermining the Legislative framework and Code of Professional conduct upon which Irish veterinarians are bound to practice under, and ultimately compromising animal welfare and causing negative public health outcomes.'

Rhodococcus Equi … this is a bacteria which can cause abscesses in foals. Signs and symptoms will depend upon the location of the abscesses & the overall immune status of the foal(s). Usually they are found in the lungs with respiratory signs and poor weight gain. However this one was located around the elbow and the foal was sick and lame. It is SSOO important now to do culture and sensitivity and correctly diagnose the bacteria found. The IEC performed C&S for us quickly and backed up their findings with PCR. We now have lanced the abscesses and have started the foal on the correct antibiotics.
