Back off ladies, he's absolutely mine😂💕
Yes Oisin, I'll be your Valentine!

This has got to be the cutest, sweetest Valentines Card I've ever received!!!

Oisin was a puppy I fostered through a leg amputation. Now he's all grown up, and the happiest little tripod ever.
So touched that he still remembers me🥰

🐾 This festive season, let's ensure our furry friends have a tail-wagging good time too!

🎄 When decking the halls and welcoming guests, prioritize your pup's safety and comfort. 🏡 Provide a quiet retreat for them to escape the holiday hustle, complete with their favorite toys and a cozy bed. If your pup isn't a fan of guests, pop him upstairs to a bedroom so he can escape in peace 💤

👫 Guests? Make sure they know the house rules for interacting with your dog. Not all pups are party animals, and some may need a gentle approach. Remind visitors to avoid feeding them table scraps, as some festive foods can be harmful to dogs.

💥Allocate one adult per dog to fully supervise interactions with children. Never leave little hands and little paws together alone.

🚫 Keep electrical cords, battery's and ornaments out of reach, reducing the risk of curious paws causing a holiday havoc.

🎅🏽 Even Santa paws needs a break! With the door constantly opening for guests, set up a baby gate to keep your dog behind while opening the front door and ensure your dog has a collar and ID tag on, in case of any unplanned escapades.

🐶 Spread the love by including your pup in the festivities if they choose to be there, but always prioritize their well-being. This Christmas, let's make it a paw-sitively delightful celebration for every member of the family! 🐕❤️

The little paw of approval.
Dolly's first certificate 🏆

Very proud of my little lady who took part in our first introductory lesson in Mantrailing. A new sport in Ireland teaching dogs to use their nose to follow a missing persons scent and find the person.

Dolly is an ex- breeding bitch from a puppy farm. She had multiple breeding homes before coming to me for rehabilitation. She learnt early on that humans were to be feared and that hands approaching her meant harm for her or that her puppies were about to be taken from her.

One of the many many things puppy farm dogs are afraid of, is walking in front of people, they generally will never turn their back on anybody. This takes time and a lot of patience to build up their trust that you won't hurt them. For Dolly to trail in front of me with a new person (Meredith) also beside me took enormous courage for Dolly but she did it and she found her missing person. 🥳

Dolly still has a way to go to overcome the abuse she suffered, but I feel she has now reached the point where Mantrailing will help her overcome the last of her anxiety around new people.

Thank you so much Meredith from .ie for being an amazing instructor, for such a fun day out and most of all for your patience with Dolly.

Do you know the signs of noise aversion and stress in your dog? Have a look at this infographic.

Thunder storms, heavy rain and fireworks have made this week a particularly difficult week for so many animals.

You have built your dog a safe den, the curtains are pulled, the tv and radio volume turned up, natural calming remedies are not helping, your dog has no interest in tasty chews because of high stress, then please speak to your vet today about prescription medications to help your pet for Halloween.

There are many anti- anxiety medications on the market to help your dog through this scary time and are there to help with noise aversion. It's not a one medication suits all approach either, every dog is different, so find the medication that suits your dog.

Its also worth getting your vet to check your dog for pain, as many dogs are super sensitive to sound when suffering from underlying pain.

It's ok to medicate!
There is help.

National Black Dog Day.
A day to highlight the difficulties rescues face when trying to rehome black dogs. I will never understand why, they are just as beautiful as any other dog. Look beneath the surface and find a true treasure.
My little lady is a rescue dog and she has me trained so well, that every day is her day.
She has my heart totally wrapped around her little paws.

Harley, not only super handsome but super smart too. He aced his recall training and got his whole family involved in the fun too 💞

Harley has such a fantastic family, totally committed to helping him be the best he can be. His human sister is only 7 years old and is going to make a fantastic dog trainer one day. His little brother is already a pro.
They say never work with animals or children , I couldn't think of anything better.

When I was training I used to hang out at a local dog park (without any of my dogs) and observe the dogs in the enclosed areas. For me it developed my skills at reading canine body language.

I'd video the dogs and then once home, slow down the videos and break down and analyse the behaviours seen.
Believe me, there are very very few dogs that actually enjoyed their time there.

So much bullying behaviour , so many under socialised dogs with poor "doggy manners" , so much anxious behaviour displayed.

Owners standing around chatting and totally unaware their dogs were struggling to cope, or were so many times a split second away from a fight escalating.

So now my new clients will understand why I flinch when they tell me they bring their reactive dogs to a park to try socialise them.

Bella could possibly be the best girl ever.
A 1 year old border collie from working collie lines, living in an urban setting. This can be a difficult adjustment for many collies but Bella has a fantastic family who are doing their best to meet her needs.

She simply loves everyone she meets and needed to learn how to greet people politely rather than jumping all over them to say hi.

We worked on a settle to a mat when more senior visitors arrive to the house and a lovely hand touch when all four of her paws are on the floor for meeting children and people on walks.

We also started teaching her not to pull on her lead when walking, hard for an enthusiastic young girl.

Bella was introduced to enrichment toys and a flirt pole to give her an outlet for her herding instinct and she loved this.

Super girl, she did so well and loved her trainjng.

Force free training is fun for your dog, and your dog should love seeing their trainer arriving again. There is no need to introduce fear, pain or intimidation to achieve results.

Did you know that your dog sweats through the pads of their paws and through panting?

If you have a long haired breed, make sure the pads are free of long hair and matting to aid them to keep cool.

It's predicted to reach 29-30 degrees this weekend, that is way too hot for your pet to be outside and exercising.

Limit time in the garden, make sure they have shade and access to indoors at all times. Keep refreshing water bowls with cool water throughout the day.

Better still keep your pet in the house, pull the curtains, give access to tiled floor areas to keep cool. Fill and freeze kongs to keep your dogs amused.

It is normal for your dog to not want to heat during hot weather, however if your dog is excessively panting, drooling, can't settle, has diarrhoea/vomiting, glazed eyes, weakness, these are signs of heat stroke which is a medical emergency. Don't delay, call your vet.

Oh my heart, a baby Schnauzer is sure to melt mine!❤
It's rare I get in a photo but how could I resist with the very beautiful, tiny Penny.
The breed I have grown up with, live with and adore above all others.

It's such a privilege to be asked to be part of a new puppys journey in life and one of enormous responsibility too, setting a puppy up for success from day one is vital.

Penny's family starting working with me before she arrived, so that they knew what to expect as first time puppy owners and followed up with consultations after the big arrival, to help her training journey with night time sleeping, toilet training, socialisation, nipping/mouthing, enrichment and basically how to be responsible pet owners.

Set your puppy up for success by working with a qualified positive force free trainer and watch a beautiful partnership evolve.

A reactive dog is not a ‘bad dog’, they may react because they are nervous, stressed, frightened, too friendly, over-excited, overwhelmed etc. … So, we need to work on the causes of the behaviour and then management of their environments to help them make better choices.

It can be really hard to have a reactive dog, and to know what the right thing to do to help them is. 😥

You should always contact a qualified behaviourist when it comes to situations like reactivity, but here are some tips to help from our behaviourist in the meantime:

🐾 Don’t take them back to a place where something negative has already happened, they will remember this location and will already be stressed before you get going. Help them first before returning.

🐾 If you have a ‘bad walk’, don’t walk them the next day if possible. Spend the day doing some brain-games and fun training; keep it very light and easy-going; this will help your dog to decompress, or go on a walk where you are very unlikely to see anyone else.

🐾 Use a secure field so that your dog can have some off-lead fun and really stretch their legs.

🐾 Walk them at different times of the day, if they are struggling during the daylight, walk them very early morning, or late evening, so there are less people. Just make sure you walk where it is safe to do so.

🐾 Research some quieter walks, ones where you are not likely to see anyone. These are great for helping you to decompress too.

🐾 Allow your dog to stand and watch the environment, if they want to. (So long as they are not reacting, of course.) A dog that is allowed to look around, sniff etc. will be able to cope better, as they have time to assess the situation around them.

🐾 Be wary of off-lead dogs/people approaching; take avoidance action before they get too close. (You shouldn’t have to avoid people forever, but it will certainly help you and your dog to do so whilst you are training).

🐾 If you do have a bad day, simply take them home; it’s ok - you have NOT failed them…

Don’t worry about the times when things may go wrong; things WILL go wrong, and that’s just life! Assess what happened; process it; learn from it, and move on…
If you are trying to help them, you are doing a great thing… Your dog is not giving you a ‘hard time’, they are just having a ‘hard time’ at that particular moment...
Things WILL get better over time, if you’re all consistent.

The very beautiful Irish Red Setter, just one of our nine native breeds of dog.

Very energetic, playful, sweet natured and devoted to their family. Bred for setting or locating game birds, given a job to do they are at their happiest but don't expect them to guard your home.

Wishing you all a very happy St Patrick's Day. Enjoy the celebrations and the extra time off to spend with your dog.

Home from the fields with the doggos and swapping my comfy dog walking waterproofs for a pair of heels for a family celebration today.

Walking in heels again after a 2 year break (thanks covid) is far more challenging then any dog aggression case, that's for sure.
