What are the implications of mismatched front feet?

Many horses have high/low front feet, where one foot has a steeper angle then it’s opposite.
But do we realise how much effect this can have on the entire musculoskeletal system!?

We can have different types of high/low.
A boxy foot and an ideal foot.
An ideal foot and a flat foot.
A flat foot and a boxy foot.
Studies have shown that that amount of difference in angle between the two is proportional to the effects on the horses biomechanics.

These horses may require much more regular physiotherapy or chiropractic due to the profound compensations which are akin to sub clinical unilateral lameness. Especially in the back as Gomez Alvarez et al. (2007) measured the majority of compensations for lameness are seen in the spine.

This is a great example of how the hoof and the horse are inextricably linked as the hoof conformation is created by physiological influences. Below is a comprehensive graphic of the effects of high/low.

A little while ago I helped on a case with chronic lymphangitis. This horse was lucky to survive the initial infection and the owners were pleased with the reduction in swelling and the boost to the wound healing they saw. Treated 6 weeks after drug regime was stopped.

So this week I've been spending some time writing up case reports on this pair of rope injuries. I helped with the co management of these injuries with radiofrequency treatment. This shows 9 weeks healing. Can't wait to see the final cosmetic result, I think it will be super. Amazingly no debridemnt of the wounds was required!

A little sneak peak at something I've been working on. INDIBA doing a nice job helping to reduce the proud flesh on this nasty wound. 10 days between left photo and right photo. Might just possibly avoid the debridemnt scheduled for tomorrow! 🤞

Your horse’s piaffes have pfizzled. His slides have slid. His rollbacks have rolled back. His leads aren’t changing. Almost reflexively, someone will say, “Maybe he needs his hocks injected.” Maybe he does. But maybe it’s a lot more complicated than that. At least it should be. FIRST ASIDE...

A nice case I've worked on recently. 3 year old sales horse, with a cosmetic swelling on its knee from a bang a few months previously. When the vet scanned it to drain, it was actually fibrous, not fluid. He referred for a course of INDIBA. Only 3 sessions here, and a lovely result!
