Founded near Mullingar in 1952, the Westmeath SPCA has looked out for the welfare of the animals of Westmeath with care and respect. Westmeath SPCA is entirely volunteer run and is a registered charity, CHY11491. We rely on the public to report cases of animal cruelty or hardship. In April 2016 we welcomed our new inspector to work on the frontline with animal welfare. The welfare of an animal inc

ludes its physical and mental state, and good animal welfare implies both fitness and a sense of well-being. An animal's welfare should be considered in terms of 'five freedoms'. Freedom from hunger, thirst and malnutrition;
Freedom from discomfort;
Freedom from disease and injury;
Freedom to behave normally;
Freedom from distress and Fear. We are always looking for volunteers to help and donations are always gratefully accepted. https://www.idonate.ie/3730_westmeath-spca.html

Nesting birds

Nesting birds

As nesting season is in full swing. We kindly ask people not to attempt to hand rear wild birds themselves. Many birds needs a very specific diet, if they are not given that particular diet, they can suffer from malnutrition, which impedes their development and causes all sorts of issues down the line. They can also become too used to humans meaning they are at higher risk of being hurt or killed once released.

This little starling chick was picked up by kind and caring people, who fed and looked after it until it could come to the centre. Baby birds can be tricky to feed, resulting in them being covered in food, this too can lead to other problems if not cleaned off properly.

If you find a baby bird, please contact our team at [email protected], with your name, location and a short video to help us assess them bird and identify the species. In turn our team will give advice on interim care until the bird can get to the centre.

Each year we admit birds that are not only too tame to release, but also have physical disabilities from being fed the wrong food.

We know people want to do the best thing. But certified rehabbers and rescues are best equipped to look after the animals in order for them to return to the wild.

Kildare Wildlife Rescue

(I've also added the donation link in comments.)

After a very long day yesterday, which ran late into the night. Our volunteers played a blinder. We admitted 38 live oiled birds yesterday.
Some more heavily oiled than others.

There were also many who had succumbed to the oil.

This tragic event is unprecedented for our little rescue, and it is one we had hoped would never happen. We are beyond lucky that several of our volunteers attended Oiled Wildlife Rescue training with Oiled Wildlife Response Network over the last couple of years.

These new admissions will put immense pressure on our already stretched finances so we have set up an emergency idonate fund to help rescue, care for and feed these birds.

Please donate if you can. We appreciate each and every cent.

Thank you in advance.

Lost dogs Athlone

These 2 dogs were found in Mayfield Grove yesterday and are now in the Family Vets in connaught street (was Athlone Vet Clinic ). no registered chips. the dog warden will take them tomorrow to the council pound if the owner does not go down to the vet and collect them. We cant rescue and rehome stray dogs unless they are surrendered to us or we take them from the pound. Otherwise the owners have a year to claim their dogs from a Rescue or the new owners. They only have 5 days to collect their dog from the Council Pound. If not then the dog can go to a Rescue or new owners. these 2 dogs are obviously family pets that got out.

Sadly still not home, please share to help him get home safe.
