‘Prolonged captivity clearly imposes profound suffering. There is no way around this reality’.

Not directly dog-related (although we do generally keep pet dogs in captivity… a discussion for another day perhaps), but food for thought on a Monday morning!

With an animal-loving toddler in the house, we inevitably get asked if we’ve brought her to the zoo yet. We haven’t, as I just can’t see past the ethical concerns of zoos…

Discussions on the welfare of nonhuman animals in zoos tend to focus on incremental improvements without addressing the underlying problem of captivity. But alterations to the conditions of zoo cap...

Steph is an Irish dog trainer and canine behaviour consultant based in Dublin. In 2019 her first book, ‘Office Dogs: The Manual’ was published by Hubble & Hattie, and has subsequently been published internationally and multi-lingually. In the same year, she founded Happy Office Dogs, providing support and resources to dog-friendly workplaces. In 2022, her second book, 'How to Raise a Puppy: A Dog-Centric Approach', co-authored with the inimitable Turid Rugaas, was published. This book aimed to move away from the traditional approach to raising puppies and encourage guardians and professionals alike to adopt a more holistic, natural approach. Steph will be enlightening us all about this dog-centred approach to puppies in October. You won't want to miss it!

Do you have a chilled adult dog who’s relaxed around other dogs? Would you and your dog be available on Sunday mornings?

I’m seeking a panel of mentor dogs to help out with more nervous/excitable dogs. Ideally, you could commit to a block of 3-4 weeks.

Modest recompense for your time/a donation to an animal charity on your behalf!

Some snaps from social walks and houndy hangouts on Sunday!

When we’re doing scent work at social walks we have to be careful to keep our expectations low and to give everyone lots of space, so we generally keep it really simple! Treat trees were the order of the day for our social walkers on Sunday!

With our houndy hangouts, we’ve a group of dogs who are all pretty happy around other dogs, so we can ask a bit more of them. So this week, we did a few minutes of scent discrimination, and put in the groundwork to begin to teach these guys to find their humans’ keys. We’ll build on this over the next few weeks. We also did some work on loose lead walking, and of course, ended up in stuffing our faces! 🤣

So much fun at our houndy hangout on Sunday!!!

It’s so nice for the dogs to see their pals, and for us humans to hang out with other dog parents!

Thanks again to who once again facilitated us, despite showing up this time with 10 people instead of the 7 I’d booked for! Wonderful customer service and I think I’m getting a little bit too fond of the cheesecake brownie! 🐷

If you and your dog would like to join us for our houndy hangouts, feel free to drop me a line!

Photos mainly stolen from and .bury - thanks guys!

Here I am again, talking about the puppy book! 🤣

Really enjoyed chatting to Nat and Steve- the time just flew in and they raised some great points!

Best of all was Nat describing us, and our ilk, as ‘tree hugging dog snoggers’! Who else wants that t-shirt???

HEY HEY HEY BOOKSHELVERS!

Nat & Steve are back for another show and this week we are talking to the amazing Stephanie Rousseau about her wonderful book HOW TO RAISE A PUPPY: A Dog-centric Approach which she co-authored with the legendary Turid Rugaas.

This really is a wonderful book for dog professionals and care givers alike. We delve deep into all the things we love about the book as well as an fun and informative interview with Steph about insights into the book and the process of writing.

We also answer a bulging sack of Bookshelver questions, ponder the hazards of leaving handbrakes off AND challenge everyone to use two words in an everyday sentence.

So sit back grab a coffee and bathe your ears in classic Barks From Banter!!!

Get it from everywhere you harvest your casts from!

We have a couple of spaces left in puppy class, starting on the 4th Feb!

You’ll attend 4 classes in Raheny where your puppy will be able to socialise safely with a small group of other puppies, and learn useful life skills such as walking nicely on the lead, road safety, recall, ‘leave it’ and more.

You’ll also get access to 4 pre-recorded sessions looking at dealing with common problems, such as toilet training, nipping, separation anxiety, jumping up, barking, as well as with care and welfare topics.

These classes are suitable for puppies under 5 months.

Houndy Hangouts today! I’m not going to lie, we did more coffee-ing than walking, given the inclement weather!
Special thanks to for reserving us a nice indoor table! Also for accommodating us when we blew in earlier than we’d booked for! Great to be able to take your dog for an indoor coffee on a day like today.

Gigi- then and now! I hadn’t seen Gigi since she finished puppy class in August, still wearing an xxs small harness, so when this big dog showed up at Houndy Hangouts today, it took me a while to recognise her as Gigi!
It was so good to see her again and to see what a lovely, confident, friendly girl she’d grown up to be! Watch this space for a video clip of Gigi practicing her recall today, with the distraction of 3 other dogs around! 👏👏👏

Fresh from the groomers, 5 month old Alfie the Bernedoodle was looking fabulous and on his best behaviour this evening!
Getting a new puppy can be quite an overwhelming experience, and the huge amount of conflicting information out there can make it really hard to know what’s normal, what’s not, and how you can best respond to unwanted behaviour.
Alfie’s parents wanted to make sure they were on the right track with his mouthing, as well as his desire to say hello to every person and dog he meets!
I’m looking forward to seeing Alfie at some of our Houndy Hangouts soon!

I’m always a bit sad when a puppy course comes to an end! I get to meet so many nice people and adorable puppies in the process, and it’s great to see the puppies grow and develop over the month- Maisie here was a wonderful example of a puppy growing in confidence.

When I met her she was really nervous of other dogs, and yelped as soon as they looked at her. By the end of the course she was so much more relaxed, hanging around with the other puppies and approaching for sniffs! 😍🐶

I’m proud to say that I can officially call myself Taylor Swift’s dog trainer!

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting Taylor Swift’s people in a professional capacity. Taylor herself was in bed for most of the session, and I didn’t want to disturb her, so I mainly admired her from afar!

BTW, Taylor Swift is a 10 week old Cavapoo. 🐶

Hi guys! I’m looking for a chilled out dog to do some distance parallel walking with a young dog who hasn’t really been tested around other dogs but has shown some signs of nervousness.

Session will be very short- probably only 10 mins- and will take place in Raheny.

Your dog will get a little goody bag for his time, and if you like, you can have some eggs from our hens!

Look at lovely Leia! We’re doing some work on Separation Anxiety with Leia to help her feel safer at home when left.
Many dogs suffer from separation anxiety and it can be really debilitating for them, as well as being very stressful for their guardians. The good news is that the prognosis is good- with a proper training plan in place 60-80% of dogs will make a good recovery. However, the road can be long!

Probably the last before Christmas!

I’ve noticed that Haqihana have also added some new, thinner leads to their collection. Worth checking out!

A comfortable harness is the ideal gift for your dog this Christmas. And if you want something that’s more for you, I highly recommend their leather lines. If you have a dog that lunges these are so much more comfortable in the hand than nylon leads!

Always happy to help with sizing queries, no problem to accept returns, and you can also come and try a harness before you buy.

As ever, prices as per the Haqihana website.

Join us for puppy classes in December! Your puppy will learn useful life skills such as coming when called, walking nicely on the lead and road safety, and you’ll learn how to deal with common problems such as toilet training, nipping, separation anxiety, barking and jumping up. We’ll also look at your puppy’s need for exercise, mental stimulation, food, sleep and more!

The course comprises 4 outdoor sessions, 4 pre-recorded sessions and 1-2 live Q&A sessions.

Meet Koda! He is what you might call a Jackpot doggy! He’s a rescue, about 7 months old and his mum did the intensive private puppy session, as Koda was just that bit too old for group puppy classes.
He was such a gem, especially for a dog of his age! He was calm, focused, quick to learn. He’s gentle and sweet and not easily bothered by what’s going on around him. Some neighbouring dogs barked out their gate at him and he just turned and walked away. I couldn’t help saying to his owner, quite a few times, ‘you’ve really hit the jackpot with him!’

Of course, there’s still time for him to turn into a stroppy teenager! 🤣

😍😍 Fabulous Otis! I have such a soft spot for shepherds and if we didn’t already have a houseful of lunatics (canine, avian and human!) I’d have been tempted to try and run away with this fellow!
A rescue from a suspected puppy farm situation, Otis is quite anxious outdoors. We’ve set up a management plan, and put some routine changes in place to try and reduce his stress levels. From there, we can begin to work on the various triggers he has.

When Rosa met Echo!

These are two recent additions to Sunday Social Walks- both Labradors! Rosa is a recently rescued ex-breeding dog who generally barks and barks and barks if she sees another dog. On walk one, she barked a lot and pee’d about every 30 seconds (a sign of elevated stress levels), but we noticed that she was better with Echo nearby. Yesterday, on her second walk, she spent most of it with Echo, barked a LOT less and peed a lot less. Echo, who was only on his third walk himself, was such a gentleman, and a great mentor and the two were happily sniffing and walking together!

Over the years, I find I’m doing less and less structured work in the social walks (although I never did very much!)- for dogs with issues with other dogs, being together is generally enough. Standing still means there’s no way for the adrenaline to disperse, so keeping moving makes things a bit easier. Sniffing activities drop the heart rate and over time, increase optimism (important, if you’re nervous of other dogs!).

So we walk, sniff and make friends! If you’d like to join us, do get in touch.

08/11/2023

So true! People often have a huge sense of entitlement around interactions with dogs.

Something else I’ve noticed now that I have a small child is that when she shows an interest in dogs, people often want to force their dogs to say ‘hello’ to her. Firstly, I don’t know about other 18 month olds, but mine has zero sense of empathy and an irksome interest in pointing out eyes by poking them and saying ‘eye’. I don’t want this for your dog, and I don’t want her learning that she has can expect to touch any dog she wants.

Learning to read their body language and to respect their polite and often subtle ways of saying ‘no thanks’ is so important.
