I live in a sleepy little fishing village in the South of Ireland, with the man of my dreams and 3 children (with another on the way). I started making Waldorf dolls for my own children several years ago and loved it so much I couldn't stop. So, in October 2010 I started Under Rainbows making unique and beautiful waldorf dolls. I love everything about these dolls, from their natural materials to t

heir sweet little faces. I especially love making custom dolls. It can be very special for a child to have a doll in their own image, so when making a custom doll I match skin, hair and eye colour and try to incorporate things like a favourite animal or colour into their clothing. For some children having a doll in their image can be an affirmation of themselves and their own uniqueness and beauty, especially if the child looks a little different to the dolls available in shops which are mostly blond haired and blue eyed girls. So amongst the dolls I have made are boy dolls, mixed race dolls, dolls with scars from surgery, dolls with medical equipment, dolls with down syndrome. I very often work using photographs as inspiration and I love hearing all about the child; their likes and dislikes, what their wee personalities are like to help me to capture some of the child's essence in their doll. All Under Rainbows Buddy Dolls and Snuggle Buddies carry the CE mark. This is a certification stating that they conform to all European Safety Standards. To carry this mark the dolls are only made from new, CE approved materials. They have also undergone rigorous strength and durability testing as well as flammability testing. I currently have a waiting list for custom dolls but I would be very happy to add you to the list. If you message me here or you can email me [email protected] with your name, email address and a brief description of the doll you are looking for I will add you to the list and contact you as soon as I have an available custom slot. Alternatively you can try making your own doll. There is nothing more special than giving a child a doll you have a made yourself, infused with all of your love and good wishes. Some more pictures of our lovely cosy day of doll making at CELT at the Slieve Aughty Center (one of my most favorite places in the world).
We shared threads and stories, support and laughter. We created beautiful dolls and lovely new friends.

Teaching doll making has been one of the highlights of the year for me and I am so excited for more next year!

Thank you everyone for helping me share the information about my workshop yesterday.

We had such a lovely time at the Slieve Aughty Center, making such sweet little dolls.

I have finished teaching workshops for the year. Next year I will be back with CELT three times in Co Galway. The May workshop is already booking up and there are limited places ☺️ I am also teaching a private inner child doll workshop and am very open to inquiries for others.

I can't wait for a day of cozy crafting.
This doll is beginner friendly. We will be making them completely by hand. It is a wonderful introduction to the art of doll making. Of course we can make your doll Christmas themed, an angel or a little elf perhaps?
Lunch is included and booking is essential.

A therapist I know asked me to make some dolls for him.
He used one of them recently in a session with a client and it brought them to a new place together.
I have seen time and time again the power of these simple little dolls to unlock parts of ourselves.
To look at them and hold them with great tenderness.
What an honour it is to do this work.

One Day Doll Making Workshop, A perfect Christmas Gift!
The type of dolls made by tutor Laura are known as Waldorf or Steiner dolls. They are crafted entirely from natural materials such as cotton, sheep’s wool, yarn, and fabric. As a result, they are gentle on both the planet and the recipient.

These dolls are characterised by their simple features—just a small nose, and eyes and mouth that are delicately embroidered. They are warm and soft to hold, offering a comforting tactile experience.

"Doll making is something humans have done since the earliest times, and it is a skill that has largely been lost due to the widespread availability of mass-produced plastic dolls," says Laura.

The dolls can be made entirely by hand. The workshop is structured in clear steps: beginning with the creation of the head and facial features, followed by stitching the body, cap, hands and feet and then assembling the doll. The doll we are making at this one day workshop will be an ideal gift for babies and young children. If you have a special fabric you would like to use I would encourage you to bring it along, otherwise a selection of simple cottons will be available on the day.

Wednesday the 15th marks Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness day.

For many women the experience of pregnancy loss or miscarriage is deeply, deeply felt. Sadly there are few places to go with this grief, and many are left with empty arms, aching hearts and silence on their lips.
