🌟DOG OF THE WEEK - CHAMP🌟

Champ is a super boy that has been waiting quite a while in the pound for us to find him a space. He is a sweet gentle boy of about a year old, and all he wants is someone to reciprocate all the love that he has to give. And cuddles, lots & lots of snuffly, slobbery cuddles. Champ is only a baby, and he is great with people (including children), dogs, and doesn't seem to have a bad thought in his head towards anyone or anything. He is full of fun as a youngster should be, and of course he will need to learn all about life over the coming months. 💙

We think Champ may be a Boxer x Staffie, and he is a medium sized dog, with a solid strong body. He is not an XL dog, but may possibly still be on the restricted dogs list. Please be aware of owner responsibility when adopting a dog that may be on the restricted list.🐾

ARE YOU WORTH COMING BACK TO?

I’m often horrified when I watch people trying to get their dogs to come back to them when they call.

They call and call and get increasingly angry and frustrated as their dog keeps ignoring them.

When their dog eventually comes back, or has been chased and "captured” by the now really angry person, they get screamed at, yanked about, or punished in some way for taking so long and not listening.

Why on earth would a dog want to return to someone who does this to them!

The most common reason dogs don’t come back when we call is because it’s not a positive experience.

A new environment is generally far more rewarding, stimulating and exciting than coming back to us.
An exciting scent or seeing something to chase can all override a response to recall.

Make coming back to you well worth it by always making it a rewarding experience and keep practicing this throughout a dog’s life.

Have a little patience if it takes longer than you would like, let your dog finish what they’re doing before calling them, practice in different locations and environments and never reprimand or punish them for coming back.

There is never a guarantee of a perfect recall each and every time, but making it a rewarding experience will greatly improve the rate of success.

🩷🥰𝙃𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙧'𝙨 𝙑𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙚'𝙨 𝘿𝙖𝙩𝙚🥰🩷

Our beautiful young AmStaff boy Homer travelled to Oughterard yesterday to have an assessment with Teresa at Redline Canine. Teresa assesses each dog's suitability around other dogs and pairs them up depending on play style & comfort levels. Homer became great friends with little Mabel and they enjoyed a fun Valentine's play date!🥰🐾 🩷

He was extremely gentle with Mabel, followed her lead & mirrored her play style perfectly. Such a gent! 🥰

He had the BEST day and snored all the way back to his foster home after a fun filled day! 🩷

Teresa's says:
"This beautiful American Staffy had an assessment. He is the sweetest boy. Here he is having rings ran around him by the little firecracker Mabel! 😂
A great boy that was able to regulate his arousal levels and match Mabel’s energy.
So impressed with him!"🥰

What a great little boy! After a very rough start in life he constantly amazes us with his resilience and genuine enthusiasm for everything! 🥹

Homer is still searching for his perfect home. He loves people, walks great on the lead, is fully toilet trained and loves a potter around the garden. He can be a bit of a chewer as he's so young but with plenty of good chews, toys & company it is manageable. He's super food motivated and responds wonderfully to praise and encouragement. 🥰

We are looking for a very special individual to join our team as a kennel operations manager and while relevant experience is preferred, we are really looking for someone with the right team leadership skills and attitude who can lead and motivate our wonderful team of staff and volunteers at our Shelter.

This job will be physically demanding, often working outdoors, whether there’s rain, hail, wind, snow or sun. While it is hugely rewarding it is also challenging, hard work and not for the faint-hearted.

It is also mentally and emotionally demanding, as many of these dogs are under-socialised or traumatised and require skilled handling.

Please note that the role is based at our Shelter in Camus, Connemara H91 AK38 and your own transport is necessary as there is no public transport available.

Unfortunately, we are seeing more & more dogs coming into us that need substantial rehabilitation, if they are to find their forever home. Macy, is one such dog, a sweet 9 month old Collie girl, that has carried the weight of the world on her shoulders since she was born. She arrived to us with two siblings, after being callously dumped on a bog, terrified and with muck so deeply embedded into their coats that it was obvious that they had never seen the outside world until now.💔

Her brother & sister progressed slowly but surely, and have now found their forever homes, but poor Macy cannot seem to put her trust in humans again. However, no matter how sad she is, Macy transforms back to a puppy when she plays with other dogs, it is magical to watch. What we are looking for is someone who will give Macy the time & space that she needs to blossom in her own time. She need doggy friends to lead the way through play & cuddles, a secure garden, and humans that can watch from a distance, and witness how little it takes, to change the course of one dogs life. MADRA will offer full support to anyone that can offer a permanent or long-term (6 month) foster to this girl.🙏

Another youngster, abandoned to her fate, Lucy, arrived to us from the pound before Christmas. She was a terrified little girl, and bit by bit she has grown in confidence here, although she may always be a bit fearful in new situations. 🩷

Lucy does need another dog, and she prefers male dogs, but any new friend must be steady & confident to help her with her fears, and if we make a match she will play all day! 🥰

She is a Terrier x, with lovely long legs, but she curls up nice & small. Being a Terrier she can be noisy when startled and can be shy of strangers so would possibly struggle in a very busy house or an urban street. She loves doing training and is keen to learn new tricks which is a great way to engage her and build her confidence.🩷

Fantastic post by ABC Dogs NZ 👏👏👏

Imagine how much happier our dogs would be if we respected their space & read their body language correctly. There would be far less bites and less dogs at risk of abandonment or being put to sleep!

It's important that we educate not only ourselves, but also our children, to ensure a harmonious, stress-free relationship for all involved. 💙🐾

This is one of those "tricky" subjects 😐
One that needs to be bought up delicately to some clients.
It can be a real shock to some people that their dog doesn't really like being hugged.
"How can you tell, are you sure ?"
This graphic is then pulled out or a link to the videos given.
"Oh wow !!! I had no idea !" is then usually the statement that follows.
But guess what ❗
It can INCREASE their bond.
Dogs can start to initiate affection and for some their consent is given MORE.
Win, win win!!!

The shop is such a huge part of our rescue - bringing in much needed funds to help us continue our work. It's also a super way to treat yourself or a loved one while sticking to a budget as everything is so reasonably priced! Badly needed with the cost of living crisis!🛍🛍

We are looking for a volunteer gardener/maintenance person to join the team and help us repair some storm damage and prepare for the year ahead.

The work includes the follwing tasks:

➡️Painting and other general maintenance.

A knowledge of gardening is helpful, as is the ability to use power tools, but there is plenty of other work to go around. The person will need to be physically strong, work well in a team, and have your own transport.
