Dog Behaviour Problems? Hidden Medical Issues Could Be the Culprit! (Gait Analysis Can Help)

Is your dog exhibiting unusual behaviour like excessive barking, hiding, or accidents in the house? You're not alone! A recent study reveals a surprising link between medical conditions and behavioural changes in dogs. (Camps et al, 2019)

Could pain be causing your dog's behavioural problems?

At Little Woofers, we understand that frustrated pet parents often struggle to decipher the root cause of their dog's behaviour. That's why we offer a comprehensive approach that combines dog training with gait analysis.

Gait analysis is a non-invasive technique that assesses your dog's movement patterns. By analysing their gait, we can identify potential sources of pain that might be impacting their behaviour.

Common medical conditions that can manifest as behavioural problems include:
Arthritis
Hip dysplasia
Dental problems
Neurological disorders

Here's how we can help:
Identify the cause: Our experienced trainers will work with you to understand your dog's behaviour and medical history.

Gait analysis: This non-invasive assessment can uncover hidden pain points affecting your dog's behaviour.

Personalized training plan: We'll design a training plan that addresses both behavioural issues and any underlying discomfort your dog might be experiencing.
Don't let hidden pain cause frustration for you and your Little Woofers! Contact us today to schedule a consultation and learn how we can help your dog live a happier, healthier life!

Happy 12th birthday to our first Little Woofer. It is also her gotcha day, 7 years ago, we picked her up from she was there for her first 5 years of her life. She is longer out of Kennels than in them which makes us so happy!!! It is something we tried to promise her when she came home!

She is our loonie toon, and still acts like a puppy but we wouldn't change a thing about her, she has come so far since her rescue days, we couldn't be more proud of her.

Happy birthday, Princess Polly Woggle🥰💜

There are many reasons why dogs can dig - it can be an innate behaviour, they can be bored so they create a job to keep them entertained, they are hunting vermin. Digging can be a natural behaviour for dogs, and they may resort to this action as a coping mechanism when they are in pain or feeling unwell.

Many dog owners don't realize that vet visits can miss pain signals due to a dog's adrenaline surge during the appointment.

Here's how a Dynamic Dog Assessment can help:
Pain Detection: We do a 90 minute online consultation to see if there are any red flags for pain/discomfort being an issue. We then organise to do a gait analysis to assess your dog's movement and identify potential pain/discomfort.
Detailed Evaluation: This goes beyond a standard vet visit, providing a deeper understanding of your dogs movement and where an issue might be.
Improved Quality of Life: By addressing hidden pain, we can help your dog feel happier and more comfortable.

Most pups don't come house trained and it is up us to show them the appropriate place to go to the toilet in a calm and positive way.

We don’t recommend puppy pads as these promote toileting in the house and it can be harder for a pup to get the outdoor concept as pups and dogs don’t generalise very well.

All pups and dogs learn at different speeds, so your pup isn’t stubborn or bold they just don’t understand yet.

Pups need plenty of toilet breaks- you can swipe to see some tips on toileting.

As a dog pawrent it is always helpful to know what we can and can't feed our Little Woofers!

Above are a list of some of the foods your Little Woofers can and can't eat.

Some studies have shown if you add fresh vegetables to your Little Woofers diet it can decrease the risk of cancer and helps build good gut bacteria!

These are some of the reasons why your Little Woofer can't eat some foods🐶

Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure.
Chocolate can be toxic. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, increased urination, tremors elevate heart rate and can even cause death.
Coffee raises blood pressure and causes cardiac arrhythmias, which can be dangerous. Little Woofers may also lose muscle control and have tremors or seizures. Caffeine affects the gastrointestinal tract and can cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Tea can contain caffeine and can have the same issues as above.
Xylitol can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure, or even death in dog
Onions contain a toxic principle known as N-propyl disulfide. This compound causes a breakdown of red blood cells, leading to anaemia in dogs.
Raw potatoes contain solanine, a compound that is toxic to some dogs. It can cause gastrointestinal distress, weakness, and lethargy.
Acorns contain tannins which can cause upset tummies and, though rare, can lead to kidney failure and be fatal
Yeast can cause alcohol poisoning and bloat in dogs
Cooked bones can splinter into shards that can cause choking and serious damage to the dog's mouth, throat, or intestines (even shop bought ones from certain stores)
Alcohol can cause unsteadiness on the feet, vomiting, low body temperature, depression of the breathing, increases in the acidity of the blood, low blood sugar, coma, seizures, and death
Macadamia nuts can cause toxicosis, a syndrome that can cause vomiting, weakness, and hyperthermia.

If you think this might help someone and their Little Woofer Tag them or Share it:)

Don't judge a book (or pup) by its cover!
A study in 2007 highlights how people judge dogs based on breed, not personality - but the science says that yes there's variability in breed, but there's also variability within that breed! So no one size fits all! The argument is decades old and has focused on different breeds throughout decades, currently the XL Bully is the centre of it.
Responsible BREEDING, responsible ownership & training are key for ANY breed - as all dogs, have the potential to be aggressive - and breeders have the capability to reduce this risk. Whilst there are multiple factors that can increase aggression or instigate an aggressive response; we always want to make sure every possible step has been taken
Taking puppy farms as an example:
• Mums suffering from chronic stress can pass this stress through the placenta to the pup
o There has been a significant amount of coverage of the neglect of mums in the past
• Illnesses in early ages and stages can increase likelihood of behaviour issues (owner observed) including aggression.
o Pups often arrive home, suffering with Giardia, bugs, illnesses, and even parvo.
• Behavioural markers - instead of breeding for looks, behaviour needs to be considered for longevity of breed lines. Genes haven't been isolated to identify and reduce aggression - but like many working breeds - we can see behaviour similarities through generations.
• Pain can play a MASSIVE part to a dog attacking and pain is known to be subjective. It's reasonable to assume docked tails and cropped ears could cause pain and/or trauma, which could in turn feed into behavioural issues later in life.
There are a multitude of factors but we should NEVER judge a book or pup by its cover.
We still have Puppy farms with a licence for 300 breeding females, and a history of welfare issues.
It's time for ministers to get off their soap boxes and address the root cause. It's unsettling that little action is taken against Dog Breeding Establishments, but Bans can be thrown out as solutions (despite the significant evidence that they don't work!)

12/06/2024

Every time we do online Pre-puppy talks and Puppy talks, it gets me thinking, I wish I'd done something like this in my family home before we had gotten dogs.

Myself and Killian are constantly learning, doing courses, reading to keep our skills up to date, doing research but before we became Little Woofers we were dog owners. 10years ago I couldn't have told you to bring your pup out on lead to go out to the toilet or how important enrichment is in a dogs day.

I think back to my family dogs and the potential they had. They weren't badly treated (we would have gotten told off quicker than the dogs🙈) but as pups we brought them out every hour to potty and didn't reward it, our dogs got walked every day and got rich tea biscuits going to bed at night.... The hours we could have saved on toilet training and doing more enrichment rather than walking the paws off them🤣 they all had good lives but by dog they could have been better and more fulfilling!

That is why we think it is SOOOOO important to start as you mean to go on, know as much as you can before this 4 legged whirlwind enters your life! Stop unwanted behaviours before they even start, let alone become an issue for you!

We always keep time available each week just for Pre-puppy/puppy sessions as we feel it is so important to get it right from the beginning and never want to keep people with a pup waiting - if you'd like to know more about these sessions as well as our online puppy sessions send us a PM❤️

Spot the Subtle Signs: How Daily Observation Helps Your Dog Fight Pain

We all love and know our dogs like the back of our paw! But did you know that your daily observations can be a powerful tool in identifying and managing chronic pain?

We're passionate about helping dogs live happy, pain-free lives. We use gait analysis to assess potential pain sources, but your insights as a pet parent are equally crucial.

Why Daily Monitoring Matters
Chronic pain in dogs often manifests in subtle changes in behaviour. These can be easily missed during a vet visit. By paying close attention to your dog's daily routine, you can spot these red flags early on.

Signs of Potential Pain
Decreased Activity: Is your normally playful pup less interested in walks, playtime, or slow to get up in the mornings?
Changes in Vocalization: Does your dog whine more frequently?
Sleep Disruptions: Is your dog sleeping more or less than usual?
Social Withdrawal: Has your dog become less interested in interacting with you or other friends?
Behavioural Changes: Are there any new signs of anxiety, like hiding, pacing, being reactive to dogs/people?

Early Detection, Better Management
By recognizing these subtle changes, you can bring them to our attention during the 90minute consultation before the gait assessment. This allows us to perform a comprehensive assessment, including gait analysis, to help find the source of pain and help your vet create a treatment plan.

Together, We Can Help Your Dog Thrive!

Don't underestimate the power of your daily observations. By working together, we can help your Little Woofer live a pain-free, happy life.
