Charlie the absolute gentleman came to stay for a relaxing long weekend break. On chatting with his family it was realised that their previous dog and siamese cat had stayed in my parents cattery and kennels ❤

This Fact Friday is about getting a 8 WEEK VACATION! 😲

Now we have your attention 😆 let's talk about getting kitten(s) their 8 week vaccinations

The basics: at a minimum a kitten should receive a vaccination which usually covers three common and/or serious viruses. One such vaccine is Nobivac Tricat Trio, though there are other brands that may be used depending on the veterinary practice you attend. For first time vaccination the vaccine is given in two doses - the first can be given once the kittens are 8 weeks old with a second dose 4 weeks after at 12 weeks old.
The website for Tricat Trio explains that it protects against feline calicivirus (FCV) , feline herpes virus type 1 (FHV-1) and feline panleukopenia virus (FPLV). You might have heard that the vaccine prevents 'Cat Flu'... but there's no mention of influenza virus, because what we commonly call 'Cat Flu' is not caused by an influenza virus. "Cat flu" is a general term for many different types of upper respiratory infection (URI) caused by both viruses and bacterial infections. The first two viruses that the vaccine covers, Calcivirus (FCV) and feline herpes virus (FHV-1) account for about 90% of URI infections in cats. At a later stage we can come back to talk about the bacterial infections that can cause cat flu symptoms, but this vaccine does not cover these. There's only a few vaccines for bacterial infections, most are intended to prevent viral infections.
The third virus that's covered by Tricat Trio is FPLV, the feline panleukopenia virus which is also known as feline parvovirus (it's similar to parvo in dogs). Whereas FCV and FHV-1 result in very common respiratory (sometimes also nasal and eye) infections that are often described as 'Cat Flu', the FPLV virus is rarer but causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms and can be fatal for kittens and even adult cats. Even though it's rare it's so serious that vaccinating against it is important.
Apart from the Tricat vaccine there are additional vaccines that can be given. For example, depending on the living situation of the kitten and availability of the vaccine, a vaccine against infection with FeLV (not to be confused with FPLV) can be given at the same time as the Tricat vaccine.
One final point - it can be easy to mix up all the different feline viruses which seem to start with F and end with V.
What we've mentioned in this post are FCV, FHV-1, and FPLV (covered by Tricat Trio) and FeLV which has a separate vaccine. But there are also the FIV and FIP viruses, unfortunately there are no vaccines for them, but perhaps we can follow up with another post to talk about those (for now there's a few details in the links below). Thank you for reading and let us know if you would like a follow up post.

Introducing Mr B.
Our laid back boy loves his food and his sleep time which is often. He likes to think he a sleek panter, with the hunting skills of a lion and the speed of a cheetah but really hes a couch potatoe 🤭
