Have you seen us in the Mourne Observer this week 👀

Huge thank you to Julie McLoughlin for her article on our success at The Local Pet Awards last month. We are still absolutely buzzing at taking home the Pet Bereavement Service of the Year and Vet Heroes awards ☺️

Thank you all for thinking of us and taking the time to vote. It means the world to have so much support ❤️

Pi on his last walk with both eyes yesterday. One had to be removed today due to trauma and glaucoma. He’s home and recovering in front of the stove. Sweet little Pi. He’s turned into Pi the Pirate. But just as much of a darling as ever. Thanks to Mike Woods of Primrose Hill Vet Practice, and Nicola Neumann of Gorey Brayvet for their caring and expertise. It can be challenging treating a colleague’s pet, they were definitely up to it!

We found this bird outside the kitchen - heard a bang earlier. Poor thing. Is it a sparrow hawk? Any opinions? Thanks!

Living with old dogs is a vast array of clunky chaos. You might wake up one day in a puddle of piddle. Or you might avoid the piddle that day but wake in a panic running for the dog nose-shaped inhaler; where on dogs’ earth did you put it?

Trips to the vet’s cost not only hard cash when you live with old dogs, but they also cost your state of mind and heart. You go through the highest and lowest emotions in a single vet trip. You never really know whether this is the time you’re getting the bad news. Is it operable, or is it just a fatty mass? Do the teeth need pulling? How’s the heart sounding?

Stairs to the sofa are purchased. Steps to the bed bought and installed. House moves are made – old dogs are better off in bungalows, don’t you know? Floors become patchworked with rugs to save little old legs from trips and sprains. Food is served at different heights, as is water, as is love.

Home becomes rest home, becomes nursing home, becomes hospice. Routines become rigid and can’t change because confusion grows in change, and old dogs get confused; often, they do.

One thing about old dogs is this. They were not always old; they were young, free, busy and bold. The dogs were bouncy, speedy, jumpy and keen. Younger bodies are kinder to those who wear them. Years pass by fast when you live with dogs. Puppyhood flies past in the blink of an eye, and suddenly, the brown turns to grey. The nimble legs become stiff, and the pools of those eyes become foggy and blue.

We have a lifetime of love with a dog, you see. Whether they join you at six weeks or six years, if we allow them to, they teach us. If we don’t learn from our dogs, we’re doing life wrong. That’s what they’re here for to teach us to love and live and learn. That’s why their lives are so short, and it serves to remind us of our own limited time.

My old dog taught me so much, so very much. Chips is his name. Chips taught me what dogs need from people. He showed me all my crunchy sides. He opened my heart right up to share that with the world. So, I shared it and continue to share it. The lesson of Chips. The lesson that makes dog lives better everywhere.

I know he’s not going to be around forever. He’s already fourteen. My beautiful dog is doddering. He needs stairs for the sofa and steps for the bed. He needs sleep, lots and lots of sleep, and he needs short, short walks. Yet, as I write this, he’s snoring under my desk. Thank goodness he is. One day, this dog will be gone and yet his legacy will stay.

And as he sleeps in my heart, I’ll stay grateful that we ever crossed paths at all.

What a blast from the past!

My mum brought this old newspaper cutting around yesterday to show the kids. Most of you won’t know this fun fact about me but I used to do Junior Handling when I was younger!

This is from 2007, when I went to crufts with the most amazing dog Penny ❤️ We were there to represent the young handlers of Northern Ireland and were placed second, amongst some very tough competition.

Unfortunately Penny passed away many years ago but she was a dream dog, she loved strutting her stuff around the show ring.

I stopped showing not long after this to focus on my exams. In the article it says I hope to become a vet some day 👏 ☺️

So glad my dream came true!

Our Bowwout service is temporarily closed until Sat August 30. In the meantime I hope to learn how to use my 'new' camera properly so that I'm not using old photos, no matter how beautiful the goldfinches are in winter! My wonderful Kochi, the German Shepherd, came close to death last weekend with severe loss of blood from her intestine. We had a drip hanging out of an apple tree, as she couldn't move, and later one hanging from an old lampstand. I've photos on the mobile but can't transfer them onto the laptop. Hence the goldfinch!
Kochi is doing wonderfully well - we're not sure of the cause of the problem but suspect a disease process. In these days of dogs overcrowded in parks, woods and beaches, it would be wise to keep all vaccinations up to date, not forgetting elderly pets. Just in case..
See you all soon - and you can leave messages if you are making plans for your pet's final hours. I have a lovely vet who may be able to help you. But officially there are no appointments now until Monday 1 September.

Kochi is brighter today, eyes definitely not as dull as yesterday. I thought we’d lost her last night, so just goes to show how perseverance and hope can be rewarded. Though I wouldn’t have allowed her to suffer much more. There’s a difference when there is hope. She’s not out of the woods yet, but she’s stronger and has more energy. Thanks again to my vet colleagues who gave such great advice and friendship over the weekend, and to all of you who offered support and good wishes. I won’t be posting more about Kochi now for a few days. I hope!

Kochi battles on - she’s pulled through another day. Hard to watch her so miserable. It’s not fair to even try to brush her. But still there is life in her eyes.

Hard to believe that I took that photo of the dogs down on Old Bawn sand-dunes two days ago, and today this.
