Excited to now offer Kinesio Taping for Equine Customers. Kinesiology Taping is an excellent additional therapy that can be used alongside massage therapy. It provides pain relief, improves muscle tone and can assist in correction of postural problems and misalignments in the body. The effects of K tape can last long after the therapy session has ended as it can be left on the horse in most cases for a few days. It is durable and waterproof so normal activities and exercise can continue as normal.

: Unlike humans, horses don’t have collarbones. Their shoulders are held to the rest of their skeleton via a sling of muscles and ligaments instead, often referred to as the “thoracic sling.”

Why is this important? We often ask our equine athletes to perform complex movements that require tremendous strength and coordination, and horses carry the majority of their weight in their front end. Therefore, it is imperative that the bulk of the muscles that support the front end are kept healthy and conditioned, and the horse is trained to use their “motor” — that is, engaging the large hind end muscles as much as possible to avoid excessive weight bearing on the front end.

If the front end of the horse is consistently overweighted or not at an appropriate level of fitness, repetitive biomechanical stresses get transferred down the leg to the smaller ligaments and tendons that were not designed to bear this weight, which can then lead to injury.

A common misconception of what to expect when booking your horse in for an equine massage therapy session is that we only look at the back or a section that is tense such as the neck or hindquarters. Eg. Getting the back man out! Instead we provide therapy to the the whole horse from head to tail. If we find an area that requires more attention we can focus our therapy there. But never without including the rest of the body. The horses muscoskeletal system works in pairs, groups and chains. If there is a restriction in one section of the chain this will comprimise the whole system.
