Trimming cat's nails (claws) - which scissors to use, where to cut, etc.

what is it good for?
--------------------------------
1) A scratch of a cat with trimmed nails
wouldn't be as deep and painful.
2) Scratching urge and instinct decrease.
Hence, the furniture and carpets
(even the scratching post)
wouldn't suffer a lot of damage.
3) Builds a strong positive bond
between the cat and the owner.
(my cats purr during nail trimming time.)
4) Enables less stressful visits to the vet.

Does it hurt the cat or cripples him?
----------------------------------------‐------------------
1) Nails grow. Hence, it is reversible and not permanent. After a few weeks without trimming, the nails become long and sharp, same as beforehand.
2) Cats function fine also with trimmed nails.
They can climb trees and hunt.
(My cats have shortly trimmed nails, and they climb trees without a problem. They catch and eat butterflies and worms, and also bring me "hunt presents" of mice and cockroaches.)

Instructions and Tips:
------------------------------------
1) Preparation and exposure to touch - Playing with the front and back paws as
well as exposing the nails (claws) for a few days prior to the trimming.
2) Cat nail scissors - Use dedicated scissors
with curved edges, in order to prevent injuries (both yours and your cat), if your cat moves and resists.
3) Timing - trim the nails when the cat is calm, preferably very sleepy or asleep, especially in the first few times, until he starts purring during trimming.
4) Cut location - cut on the white part, a few millimeters away of the pink part. Leave a small white gap.
On the 1st time, cut a little further away
and shorten it the following week.
5) Counting - Cats have 5 nails on the
front paws and 4 on the back paws. Count how many nails you finished cutting. Thus, if the cat runs way in the middle, you would know where to continue.
6) Frequency - Cut every 1-2 weeks. Thus, the nails remain short and blunt. The nails of the back paws grow slower.

גזירת ציפורניים לחתול - באילו מספריים להשתמש, כיצד לזהות את מיקום החיתוך, ועוד.

למה זה טוב?

1) שריטה של חתול עם ציפורניים גזורות, תהיה פחות עמוקה, ופחות כואבת.
2) חתול עם ציפורניים גזורות מתגרד ומשייף פחות את הציפורניים על רהיטי הבית וגם ישתמש פחות במתקן הגירוד.
3) מפתח קשר טוב בין הבעלים לחתול. (החתולים שלי ממש נהנים ומגרגרים בהנה ב"שעת הטיפוח" שלהם.)
4) בעת ביקור עתידי אצל הוטרינר קיים פחות חשש ולחץ בפציעה של הוטרינר אם הוא יבדוק ויכאיב לחתול.

האם זה פוגע בחתול?

1) הציפורניים גדלות ומתארכות, ולכן הפעולה הפיכה. ניתן להפסיק לגזור ולאחר מספר שבועות המצב ישוב לקדמותו.
2) חתולים מתפקדים ומסתדרים מצויין גם עם ציפורניים גזורות. (החתולים שלי עם ציפורניים שגזורות קצר מאוד, והם עדיין מצליחים לטפס על עצים, לצוד לשחק ולהביא "מתנות" של עכברים וג'וקים, ולפעמים גם לתפוס ולאכול תולעים ופרפרים.)

שלבים:
ו----------ו
1) הכנה וחשיפה מוקדמת - מספר ימים טרם החיתוך והצגת המספריים לחתול, רצוי לגעת בכפות הרגליים הקדמיות והאחוריות של החתול, וכן להוציא/לחשוף את הציפורניים ע"י לחיצה עדינה על כריות הרגליים.
2) ציוד - מספריים ייעודיים לגזירת ציפורניים לחתולים, כלומר מעוגלים, אשר מונעים פציעה בחתול (או בנו) אם החתול מתנגד לפעולה.
3) תיזמון - יש לגזור את הציפורניים כאשר החתול רגוע, עדיף ישן/ישנוני, בפרט בפעמים הראשונות עד שהוא מתרגל.
4) מיקום החיתוך - בחלק הלבן, קצת אחרי האיזור הורוד (שבו נמצאים כלי הדם). בפעם הראשונה כשהציפורניים חדות וארוכות מאוד, עדיף לגזור רחוק יחסית מהאיזור הורוד, ולאחר שבוע לקצר ולדייק יותר.
5) ספירה - לחתול יש 5 ציפורניים בכף רגל קידמית, ו 4 ציפורניים בכף רגל אחורית. בעת הגזירה מומלץ לספור את הציפורניים שכבר גזרנו. כך אם החתול יברח, נדע החל מאיזו ציפורן לחזור.
6) תדירות - יש לגזור ולקצר את הציפורניים כל כשבוע-שבועיים כדי לשמר את האורך הקצר, ולמנוע ציפורניים חדות. יש לשים לב, שהציפורניים ברגליים האחוריות מתארכות לאט יותר.

איכות הסירטון:

סליחה על רעשי הרקע ובעיקר על חוסר הסדר והבלאגן בסירטון (מקווה שהכתוביות עוזרות לעשות קצת יותר סדר)
לא תיכננתי מראש מה להראות ולהסביר. ואם הייתי עושה טייק נוסף, אז כבר לא באמת היה מה לגזור כי מיד המשכתי לגזור גם את 3 הרגליים הנוספות.
