NEW VIDEO!
How do dogs perceive time?

We have a very unique ability that other animals don't have and that's to travel freely through time, in our mind.
We can sit and reminisce about old days. we can plan our trips and holidays.
We can remember the smallest details and live things we can only imagine and all in our heads.
When we understand that the dogs' mind doesn't work like that, we will begin to understand how our dogs perceive time and reality.

Thanks for watching!

NEW VIDEO!
Have you ever really looked at dogs playing?

Did you know that during playtime, dogs display almost all communication signals?
Game time for dogs is the best time to practice their social skills.
From the moment they begin to interact with their siblings, they tryout their communication abilities.
Playtime contains "war signals" such as growling and biting.
Hunting skills such as chasing, neck biting, shaking.
Surviving skills like escaping and surrendering.
Avoiding skills with unwanted communication.
Bite inhibition by controlling the power of their bite during play.
Calming skills practice all calming signals on themselves and others.
Mating skills by hu***ng each other. this is also a sign of excitement!

Just like children, dogs practice their communication skills early on.
Playtime is the time to learn to communicate with others

how can you know if its play or fight?
Easy!
The play bow is the international sight for lets play. If there are play bows involved you can relax, its play.
Bodies are loose and relaxed.
All dogs are into it. nobody is trying to escape and hide.
The energy goes up and down during play.

Playtime is also the best time for us to learn about dog language and communication. All the signs are there, just need to open our eyes and watch.

Trust fall!! 🪂🐕
I’ve been prepping this for years!
Seriously, in every opportunity when he’s in a good position, I say “trust fall” and push him back (gently 😇) in to my arms or to the bed.
He’s a tight little dog, it was hard for him to let go of control and trust me.
It’s still a work in progress and I’m going gradually. Small falls at first.
Puppy steps 🐾
I tried this a few times and it wasn’t smooth sailing but in this trial he actually started to lean back on his own! I stopped him so I can say trust fall before 🤣
He definitely learns faster then me 😍🐶

3 reasons your dog follows you around
Does your dog follow you to the bathroom?
Does he follow you wherever you go?
Our dogs follow us around mainly because they need to know whats going on.
It can be about getting to know our routine, it can be about just the love of being around us at all times and sometimes it implies that our dog has separation anxiety.
Either way, we CAN help our dog figure out when there is no reason for him to follow us.
By simply telling him that we are coming right back, we can help our dog be more relaxed and not stressing every time we make a move.

Does your dog follow you around?
Why do you think that is?
Let me know in the comments what you think.

Stability exercise!!
Since Chancho is so exited, it’s pretty hard for him to stand still 🙅🏻‍♀️
So stability is a difficult skill for him to learn.
The key for these kind of ongoing behaviors is the release cue.
When you have a good reliable release cue, you can easily raise criteria.
We try to do some fun stability tricks in every session and it’s definitely paying of 💪🏻

Our journey to handstand 🤸🏻‍♂️🐕
This is moving pretty fast!
It’s very clear to see tricks he likes and tricks he doesn’t (like rollover).
I’m so happy this is one that he seems excited about 🤩
I want him to start lifting his but to reach the box instead of one leg at a time. So that’s out next step for now.
Loving this trick! 😍

NEW VIDEO!
The most important thing your dog needs from you.
We are basically dogs inside.

We have very similar needs as our dog. The most important thing for us is to feel safe. We can't enjoy anything in life without the assurance that we are not in danger.
And so does our dog. The difference is that we are mature adults and responsible for our own safety. Our dog depends only on us.
If we don't make him feel safe, he will do it on his own.
This is one of the reasons for aggression and leash reactivity. The dog is finding his own way to feel safe.
We should see him, understand him and help him feel safe.
When the dog is fearful or very anxious, it is NOT the time to train him.
It's the time to help him feel safe, away from whatever bothered him.
After that, we can learn from what happened so we can prevent it in the future.

Dog training is all about creating success for your dog.
When teaching your dog a new behavior, you want to make it easy all the way.
Starting with easy goals and slowly making it more challenging.
It should be fun for everyone!
This trick is one of Chancho's favorites!

How to build your dog's confidence?
What even affects a dog's confidence?
Can a fearful or anxious dog be confident?

We, as owners, play a huge part in raising our dog's confidence.
We have the power to help our dog feel comfortable in different situations.
Building confidence in our dog should be part of everyday life with him,
especially if we are raising a puppy and are in charge of his early puppyhood.

Our dog's level of confidence begins to build before he is even born.
A puppy meets the world and his first experiences determine how confident he will be throughout his life.
After that, it is completely our responsibility to make sure our dog is safe and feels secure.

Raising a dog's confidence is not about a thing you do or technic you use and p**f! he has confidence.
It's about acquiring tools to use in everyday life to help him feel more comfortable and trusting.

I love how he adds flair to everything 🤩✨🦌
Along side the more complicated skills we are (slowly) building, we still have some basic skills that needs improving.
Standing steady without taking steps for him 🐶
Being clearer with my vocal and visual cues for me 🙋🏻‍♀️
I confuse myself sometimes 🤭
Long ways tho go but the journey is fun 💃🏻

*Handstand progressions* 🐕🤸🏻‍♀️
I love the way his body is figuring this out 🤩
This is complex stuff... the movement back, awareness to im his back legs (who even thinks about those??), finding the platform, hold shape 😅
This is a skill, and as with any other skill it’s all about the repetitions.
The body learns.
I don’t know when we’ll get there but someday we will 😊

So obvious for us that “jump through” means either side ◀️▶️
But if I train a dog on one side only, the other side will be a different story for him.
Chancho is obviously very confused when I ask him to jump from the other side 😆
If I want him to jump from both sides, I need to put in the work and generalize sides for him.
After that I will keep generalizing positions, location and people.

Experimenting with new shapes 🐾
We Keep working on the stability skill and stimulus control.
He’s not waiting for the release cue consistently but he’s definitely starting to understand the treat only comes after the “ok” 👍🏻
We’re still playing around with everything, learning each other’s movements and timing.
It’s awesome to feel how we’re slowly syncing 🐶❤️💁🏻‍♀️

How to get your dog to listen to ANYTHING you say - with classical conditioning

We can teach our dog to react to anything we say or do!
Understanding how classical conditioning work and using it in our dogs training, will help us get more attention from our dog.
It can be very frustrating to try to teach our dog to listen to us. Using this basic learning skill is the easiest way to teach our dog to listen to our words.

Raising criteria ⬆️
we started training for a handstand!
or a PAWstand 🐾
I know from first hand (no pun intended) what a journey it is to get to a stable handstand (still on my way). So we’re going to take it slow, on step at a time.
Starting with teaching him to lift his back paws to a platform that will get higher with time. 🐾🤸🏻‍♀️

16/01/2020

Punishment CAN be effective and easy to use.
But there's a price to pay...

When disciplining our dog, we don't always know how to react to our dogs bad behavior. Every dog training and educational approach has its pros and cons.
As a dog owner, you get to choose how to educate your dog.
Dog education CAN be pleasant, teaching your dog good behavior can be, and should be, fun for everyone.

Here are 6 possible downsides of using punishment

1. Punishment applies only to the last behavior that accrues. If I can't punish the behavior when it accrues, I might punish the wrong thing.

2. Punishment teaches the dog what not to do. The information is lacking. What should he do instead? If an alternative behavior is not offered, the dog won't know what to do to get what he needs and might repeat the bad behavior over and over again or he will find a different way to get what he wants. We might not like that either.

3. Punishment in the wrong timing will get the dog confused and not understand why he's being punished.

4. If the punishment is not intense enough the dog will get used to it. it becomes ineffective forcing you to increase the strength you're using.

5. The dog might associate the punishment to whatever is around him at the moment.

6. The punishment is only effective when the punisher is present. that means that when the owners are in the room, bad behavior will not happen. But when the owner is not around and there's no one to punish, the behavior will just repeat itself. It's not from lack of respect it's just the dog learning the boundaries while the owners are around as opposed to when they are not around.

Punishment can be very easy and work fast, but it's not magic. choose your training approach, but choose well.

09/01/2020

We have been PUNISHED since forever.

In school, at home, we punish our kids, we punish our friends and we punish our dogs.
Education is built around punishment, has been for decades.

In the past few years there has been a change in educational approaches.
We can see these changes occur at some schools in some countries in some homes in some places.

The dog training world is also changing and other tools that don't involve punishments are beginning to appear in a lot of trainer's tool boxes.

Using punishment in training is a choice.
It is the easy choice.
It doesn't take much to punish because fear is a very strong motivation.

When we take punishment out of our toolbox, we need to be creative to find alternative tools to reach our educational goals.

We tend to punish bad behaviors without even trying to see if there is ANOTHER way to handle the problem.
We can learn how to treat our dogs with respect and get respect back without intimidating them.

We don't need to be the ALPHA anymore.

Like our page to acquire other tools to use in your relationship with your dog, that don't involve Using punishment, leash corrections and pack leader dynamics.

raising a happy dog

hi! my name is Shani Rosen. welcome to my new page “Let’s DOG about it!” We are all about all about dog psychology, behavior, communication and training.

I've been a dog trainer since 2011 and in the past 6 years I've been running a dog hotel from inside my home. And when I say home, I mean with me on the couch, in my bed and sometimes even on my head. I live and breathe dogs most of my time.

Living with big groups of alternating dogs in my home, watching them adapt, play, communicate and learn, has given me an inside look of their mind and soul.

As a dog trainer, I aspire to avoid the use of punishment and unpleasantness in my training and my hotel. I believe dogs should be respected and seen and their basic needs should be fulfilled so they can live a happy life with us.
