As a Canine Nutritionist and fellow pet parent myself, I believe that transparency and communication are essential when it comes to the well-being of our pets.

Proper communication is a very important part of the consultation services i offer, and I'm available to my clients over WhatsApp which is an instant option unlike E-mail, Yes, it does get tiring at times, but that's what it takes. And i do expect all my clients to have the same level of transparent communication with me. If they do have any questions, they are free to schedule a call on my calendar using the link shared to them whenever they want to talk to me.

Now, for people who aren't my clients:
Here are a few key things that pet parents deserve to know:

1. Medications and Supplements: Pet parents should be informed about any medications or supplements being given to their dog, along with the reasons behind them. It's crucial to understand why a particular treatment is being administered and how it contributes to the pet's health.

2. Professional Explanation: Your nutritionist should be able to explain why a specific medicine or supplement is being recommended for your pet's unique needs. Transparency about the rationale behind treatment decisions helps pet parents feel empowered and confident in their pet's care.

3. Dietary Plans: If a canine nutritionist provides a dietary plan for your dog, you should be able to discuss it with your vet. This ensures that everyone involved in your pet's care is on the same page and can collaborate effectively to optimize your pet's health.

4. Open Communication: Pet parents should feel comfortable reaching out to the nutritionist or any other pet professional involved in their pet's care with questions or concerns. Likewise, professionals should be receptive to communication from pet parents and veterinarians to address any inquiries or adjustments needed in the pet's care plan.

After moving to a fresh food diet for your dog and have seen amazing results, Have you ever wondered - Why don't everyone do this?

Well, here's one of the most common answers - Expenses!!

Feeding fresh can be either a reasonable or an expensive affair, but it narrows down to - what are you feeding (ingredients), where are you located?!

In metropolitan cities, feeding a fresh, complete & balanced diet will definitely come to a minimum of INR 10,000 for a medium to large breed dog. This cost WILL fluctuate depending on your dog's health conditions, where you live, and the quality of ingredients you source!

I live in Bangalore, hence sharing the costs of here. If you're located in any other cities like Mumbai, Delhi etc, definitely the prices will vary.

The recipe in the pictures, is a Chicken based recipe for Blue which i prepped a while back, which costed around 320 rupees per day, and roughly INR 9,600 per month including the supplements - this is the cost because i DIY, if its sourced from any food provider, the cost for the recipe will INCREASE.

If this was a Mutton based DIY recipe, the cost will easily fluctuate between INR 13,000 to INR 15,000.

Please don't ask me the approx. cost when it comes to Duck or any exotic protein, i will buy it, but i will not calculate it. 🙈

This is the cost of only the food, the treats, chews and other things are not accounted for.

Yes, it may seem expensive, but its definitely worth it because - MY PET'S HEALTH IS AN INVESTMENT AND NOT AN EXPENSE, I will never ever categorise it as an expense.

1. If you're already feeding fresh - Great Job!♥️
2. If you want to switch to fresh - Amazing, and i wish you, All the best!🤗
3. If you're not feeding fresh - Please try to add a very small amount of fresh food to their existing kibble, some amount of fresh food is better than nothing! 🥦

Plant matter 🌿, even though its not an ABSOLUTE necessity for dogs, we just cannot ignore the benefits it offers and also the problems it causes when fed excessively.

Read this after you read all the slides!

Glossary:
1. Anthocyanins are water-soluble pigments that are found in blueberry, blackberries, and other plants. They give these plants their red, purple, and blue colors. Anthocyanins are part of a larger group of compounds called flavonoids, which are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
Anthocyanins have been studied for their potential health benefits, which include reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. They may also have neuroprotective effects, helping to improve cognitive function and memory.

2. Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant that is produced by the body's cells. It plays a key role in protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can damage cells and contribute to a range of health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and arthritis. In addition to its antioxidant properties, it helps to detoxify harmful substances in the liver, plays a role in immune system function, and helps to regulate cell growth and division.

3. Oxalate is a naturally occurring compound found in many veggies, especially leafy greens like spinach, kale, and beet greens. High levels of oxalate in the body can increase the risk of kidney stone formation.Cooking or boiling vegetables can also help reduce their oxalate content!

Water intake is a crucial topic & a very important indicator of a dog's health and well-being!

Read this after you read all the slides!

It's not ideal if your dog begins to drink an unusually large amount of water all of a sudden. This could be a sign of excessive thirst, which may be caused by various illnesses such as Cushing's disease, diabetes, fever, diarrhoea, liver disease, and kidney disease. In addition, certain medications and anti-inflammatory drugs that are prescribed to treat allergies, IBS, and other conditions can also lead to increased thirst in dogs.

Please note that if your dog is consuming a significant amount of water, it is advisable to avoid jumping to conclusions immediately. Instead, it is important to observe the situation carefully. It is possible that the increased water intake is simply due to dry and warm weather conditions.

⚠️ When your dog's water consumption is inadequate, its urine may appear dark yellow and emit an unpleasant odour, indicating that they are experiencing severe dehydration.

⚠️When the urine appears to have any shades of brown, red, or pink, it could indicate potential problems such as renal stones, bladder issues, urinary tract infections, and others. In such cases, it is important to urgently take your pet to the vet and conduct a urine analysis and urine culture to diagnose the issue more accurately.

Selecting appropriate treats is crucial when providing a complete and balanced diet, as giving random treats can create a severe imbalance in the diet being provided.

It is the responsibility of a nutritionist to offer recipes that can be prepared at home or recommend acceptable treat options that can be purchased from reputable bakers, while also ensuring that they do not disrupt the balance of the formulated recipes.

As a nutritionist, It's my responsibility to provide true & unbiased opinions! I will not push an ingredient to the side by saying that it will not be okay!

Understanding ingredients, nutrients, composition, nutrient synergistic and antagonistic reaction is not everyone's cup of tea.

To clear it in the beginning - I'm not against any ingredient, each ingredient has a specific use in the diet.

GRAINS ARE NOT FILLERS! Grains are GRAINS.

Adding more vegetables to FILL your dog is no different than adding grains.

Don't feed lots of vegetables and expect it to give calories for your dog's daily requirements, all it will give is farts!💨

When it comes to the nutritional perspective, it MAKES a huge difference.

Number 1 is fiber & carbohydrate load & energy!
If you feed more & more fiber, your dog will not have a normal p**p, it either causes constipation or loose stools depending on the type of fiber fed (soluble or insoluble).

Before pushing any ingredient to the side, understand what is it actually!
Millets, Grains, Seeds, each ingredient are totally different!

Quinoa and Buckwheat are seeds, for crying out loud! Not grains!

And for all those people who say grains are fillers and stuff, try saving a dog with kidney failure with ample amount of meat protein which gives a huge load of phosphorus. Let's see whether the dog lives!

Another example, Try skipping grains for dogs with EPI, IBD, Pancreatitis and other GI conditions, let the dog start p**ping blood and lets see the whether MEAT PROTEIN comes to the rescue or grains!

Everyone in the fresh feeding world, loves variety!♥️

Everyone loves to feed all colours of the rainbow 🌈.

So why not a complete and balanced variety!😁

If not a completely new recipe, you can definitely ask your nutritionist what different ingredients you can use at a replacement of this specific ingredient, to add a new taste to the recipe.

⚠️ This is applicable only for healthy adult dogs and puppies. Therapeutic meal plans are completely different considerations. Don't make any changes to the recipe without consulting the nutritionist.

One of the most argued topics in the fresh feeding world is -

Why do we need supplements? Isn't fresh food enough?

So, here's the answer and proper reasoning on WHY!

Fresh food is mostly enough when you are able to feed most of the ingredients given in the meal plan without any constraints in terms of sourcing, the dog accepting that food ingredient in their bowl, and obviously! Their health condition!
Even on entirely balanced diets using fresh food, bioavailability will become a question!

I have provided lots of examples of Zinc in the post pictures, so in the caption - Let's take Manganese for example for your better understanding:

Just FYI - Manganese functions as a component in cell enzymes and can be
found in the mitochondria of cells. Manganese plays a vital role in
bone and cartilage development where it is necessary for joint
health. It also acts as an antioxidant, and assists in carbohydrate
metabolism. Increasing manganese amounts in the diet are beneficial
for pets who suffer from joint injuries and osteoarthritis.

Whole food sources include Brown Rice, Green Tripe, Mussels & Ginger Powder.

For dogs, Mussels & Green Tripe are most suitable because they absorb nutrients better from a meat source, this is only applicable if you live in a place where you can source good quality mussel meat like the United States. If you feed mussels in places where the quality is not good, you'll end up feeding toxins in the name of fulfilling nutrient requirements. And coming to Green Tripe, you have to feed unprocessed & unbleached tripe for maximum nutrients (not to mention, this is super stinky; I, being a pure non-vegetarian don't have the audacity to feed green tripe because it is stinky AF).
To add to the above, dogs with histamine intolerance issues & other medical conditions are suggested NOT to have green tripe in their diets.

I've been formulating so many therapeutic recipes since so long - EPI, IBD, Pancreatitis, Arthritis, Cardiovascular Disease, Renal Disease, Hepatic Disease, You name it!
I've lost count of dogs with skin & coat issues and Hip Dysplasia!

And it's disappointing and it's exhausting!
Not formulating the recipes, seeing dogs in such health conditions.

So, I wanted to share a reminder!

Make a choice for your dog now, if not, you'll be forced to do it later, because you will not have 2 options then!😊
