As a dog shelter that is run exclusively for paraplegic dogs, we are always requested to take in dogs from all parts of Tamil Nadu. With the growing number of dogs exceeding every day, we are always in need of enclosures to house the dogs in during the nights and seasonal changes. To aid us in such cases, this kind-hearted donor built an enclosure for our blind dogs in memory of his father Mr. Kabirdass and this enclosure was named after him.

We at Daaman extend our heartfelt gratitude for the support and the donation made towards our cause by the donor and Ms. Raji who came forward to help us in this cause.

We are looking for donors who can build us enclosures to house our dogs so if you're interested in getting involved, please reach out to us for more details.

Swetha 🐾

Swetha was rescued from the streets of KK Nagar. She was reported by who found her wandering on the roads, all alone fending for herself. Swetha was reported to us asking to be admitted to the shelter ❤️ hearing the go ahead from us, she was promptly picked up from the street and taken for her full body check up and vaccinations.

She came to the shelter all jittery and scared and crying. But she's settled in well today with her enclosure mates Sriram and Jaspreet.

Our shelter specializes in the care of paraplegic, blind and old dogs. Day in and day out, we keep getting rescue calls from different parts of Tamil Nadu reporting dogs in horrendous conditions, many of them abandoned and also hit by vehicles. They would be lying there helpless and surrendered to their fate until some kind hearted reporter stopped in his tracks and took a look and came forward to help!

We are quite diligent about admitting dogs that are surrendered to the shelter. Our team maintains a dedicated waiting list of dogs that are to be admitted to the shelter owing to which, in some cases, we have to turn down requests for taking in healthy dogs. We have enough and more abandoned breeds as well as indie dogs who were heartlessly left at our gate or surrendered to the shelter citing different reasons their humans say such as relocating for work etc. It is quite disheartening to see these gentle beings discarded as a burden when it comes to us moving out of our comfort zone for their sake.

Surrendering healthy dogs to a shelter like ours will remove the chance of helping a paraplegic or blind dog in its wake. Our humble appeal would be to not abandon dogs and also post requests to us to take in your grown up dogs 🐾 we are here to cater to the needs of all these special children who deserve to have a peaceful and healthy life and would have a tough time on the streets ❤️

Team MARS wishes our beloved founder and wonder woman Ms. Sarah a very happy birthday 🎈🎂

They say "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".

Mumma to over 300 plus dogs, Sarah's one minded intent to offer a second lease of life to dogs affected by paralysis has been a game changer in the way we view animal welfare today.

At a point when Euthanasia was a preferred option for paraplegic dogs, Sarah and Gerry made it their life's mission to rewrite history with their initiative Madras Animal Rescue Society. Dogs affected by spinal injuries and rendered incapable of mobility were given a second lease of life and were offered the much needed support in the form of love, nutrition, care and support.

Through these efforts, we have witnessed countless miracles of dogs starting to make a full recovery from their condition of being completely paralysed to crawling, walking and even running across the shelter.

Daaman today is currently the largest shelter in the whole of Tamil Nadu to cater to the unique needs of paraplegic, blind and special needs dogs. Through countless hurdles and obstacles, Sarah and Gerry continue to push forward to foster a nourishing and thriving environment for these dogs to live their best life.

We at Daaman, wish our beloved Sarah mam a very happy birthday. ❤️❤️ May her love always inspire those around to take sincere action to end animal cruelty and make a leave a kinder world in its wake 🎊🎊🎊🎊

We are so grateful to announce that we were one of the selected NGOs to receive a grant from the Tamil Nadu government under the Vallalar Palluyir Kappagangal Scheme which has been given towards medical, food needs as well as ambulance.

Our heartfelt thanks to the Tamil Nadu Animal Welfare Board for this wonderful scheme. It is of great help and support for shelters like ours.

Virtual adoptions - what are they?

Let us explain! Virtual adoptions are where donors who are willing to support our cause, can undertake to sponsor the expenses of a particular dog/ dogs over a course of a period say a year or more.

Virtual adoptions are absolutely helpful for shelters like ours since most of our dogs are special needs and require specialized care and support.

Virtual adoptions are especially useful if you want to help an animal in need but are unable to bring a pet home. You will receive personalized updates on your virtual pet and you are free to visit them at your convenience!

Virtual adoptions are a huge help for shelters like ours and they help foster a loving bond between the adopter and the adoptee.

Like our founder Sarah explains in the video, we have 30 plus paraplegic puppies and most of them have begun to show signs of significant improvement after coming here. When a puppy becomes paraplegic at a young age, based on the severity of their condition, we can ensure that they get enough physio and nutrition and help them start walking again!

Daaman is home to more than 300 dogs of which, 170 of them are paralysed dogs. All of our days go in ensuring that these kids live their best lives in this sprawling sanctuary that was constructed with a lot of love and passion.

Would you like to become a virtual pawrent today? You can convey to us your interest in DMs and we will send you the details.

Thank you so much for the feature ❤️
Posted • It’s heartwarming to see people helping people. But when you see them helping animals who can’t speak for themselves or demand any kind of justice, that’s a whole other kind of warmth.

Sarah and Gerry are a married couple whose mutual love for dogs strengthened their love for each other. Together they dreamed about doing something amazing for canines that need specialized care.

From the moment they opened their trust MARS (Madras Animal Rescue Society), they knew they had also opened a new chapter in their lives. After a while, they founded Daaman Dog Shelter (at Krishnankaranai, Mahabalipuram). It became a ‘home of hope’ for dogs in need of care and medical attention. They spend out of their own pocket to keep the shelter going.

To Sarah, it is not just about rescue but also rehabilitation. This is why she and her husband provide quality nutrition and physiotherapy, in addition to other services, to benefit the dogs they rescue. They find a uniquely human sense of happiness and delight by helping dogs that everyone else gave up on. This couple walks the talk and provides a safe space for canines to live a normal and healthy life.

Sarah’s experience as a teacher for disabled children instilled in her a singular sense of empathy. She wanted to take that empathy and also let it benefit innocent doggos. These beautiful, loyal, and emotional animals are not called our ‘best friends’ for no reason. Throughout the decades, these magnificent creatures have played some of the most game-changing, life-altering, and history-making roles.

Sarah and Gerry’s work at Daaman is helping them give back to the dogs what they have always unconditionally given us, namely love and loyalty. The couple’s wide-open farm provides lost, abused, forgotten, and abandoned dogs a new lease on life. They are exemplifying what it means to show kindness to those without a voice and to find our own voice in the process.

Be part of their wonderful work and support them.

Hola lovely people! The weather has been lovely lately with occasional drizzles and mild showers. We are unsure about your rainy day plans but here at the shelter, the doggos love to huddle together with their pals and sleep off the weariness. You gotta be up and running for play time so make rest while the weather's favourable eh?

We have been making these makeshift tarpaulin shelters for our kids to help them shelter themselves in case of heavy rains. We are in urgent need of a few more of these sheets at the moment so if you would like to donate or contribute, kindly reach out to us via DMs. We can carpool resources and collect them at a common point in the city!

Hope your day is as relaxing and snuggly as ours. ❤️🐾

The unseasonal rains had us on our toes but today is a welcome break here at Chennai. The skies are clear and we are enjoying a peaceful day here at the shelter

Here's Ms. Sarah with our beloved Cyrus (earlier known as Teddy the bear) from a few weeks ago. We are gearing up to come up with the transformation story of Cyrus from being a paralysed 7 month old Labrador puppy found abandoned outside Vepery medical College to now giving his shelter mates a run for their money with his high spirited sprints across the length and breadth of the shelter. Stay tuned for this will be one such story that you don't want to miss!

🐾 MARS VACCINATION DRIVE 💉

Shelter works have been keeping us on our toes all day but we have been doing our part in ensuring the collective welfare of community animals in the city.

It came to our notice that some of the feeders on the Uthandi and Nainarkuppam stretch on the ECR were facing a dire need of a vaccination drive for the street dogs there as many of them were having a miserable time with the onslaught of CD and suspected rabies.

Vet Nishant was organized to vaccinate these kids and with the help of many feeders and rescuers like close to 57 dogs were given their DHPPI and ARV shots. The drive started at around 3:30 PM in the afternoon and ended at 7 PM in the night

Many of the dogs in the fisherman villages are having a harsh time in this summer with most of them suffering from scabies and other infections. We hope to conduct many more such drives on the ECR stretch 🐾❤️

If you would like to help with these drives as a collaborative partner, please reach to us via DMs ❤️

Madras Animal Rescue Society is organising a stray dog vaccination camp along the ECR stretch!

We have been hearing a lot of rescuers raising requests for vaccinations in this stretch as the cases of Canine Distemper and Rabies are on the rise.

In our first phase, we will be vaccinating the dogs at the fishermen villages at Uthandi and Nainarkuppam. 🐾

Volunteers are more than welcome to join us on this mission! Let us make sure that we work towards reducing the suffering and involuntary death of strays due to CD and Rabies ❤️

Make way for the terrific trio! 🥹

Sisters Ramba, Urvashi and Menaka are having a ball of a time in this gorgeous weather, but wouldn't stand for enthusiastic shutterbugs trying to capture them. They will just gang up together and stand their ground barking their way out of these fearful situations 😆

It is a spectacular sight to see the companionship that these siblings have and the loyalty and respect they hold for each other 🌼

Daaman holds many more such precious relationships at its core and we are filled with love and warmth watching these sibling troops live their best life here under our care!

Rocky is a little troublemaker. He's goofy, friendly, and super energetic. Always trying to run around. Taking these pictures was *not* easy. 😂

Rocky would be ideal for a family with experience raising large breed dogs, preferably a Rottweiler.

🌟 Appreciation post 🌟

Daaman has opportunities open for interns and volunteers who would like to do a project with us for a period of time.

Here's speaking of her experience with Daaman in her own words

"My experience at MARS

My name is U.Avantika and I am a 3rd year student at Madras Christian College and I am doing my Bachelor’s in Social work. As a part of our curriculum we were asked to intern at an organisation of our choice. My internship was for 15 days and those were the best days of my life. As I started my internship on the first day I was quite nervous and anxious if I would be able to do justice to my role and if the dogs would warm up to me but to my surprise all the dogs were super friendly and loving that they warmed up to me quite immediately. The shelter has about 300 dogs and most of them are either paraplegic, blind or have some other disability. I always look forward to another day because of how much I learnt from my mentors Ms.Sarah and Mr. Gerry. They were the most passionate and determined people I have ever met and they inspired me everyday. I learnt so many things about the organisation such as their projects like Bandhan, Daaman and the ABC program. I also learnt a lot about dogs, like how they behave, how to handle them, various medicines required to treat them, some amount of physiotherapy etc. My 15 days at MARS were like a dream come true and I feel like MARS is the raw and authentic compared to the other animal organisations that I have volunteered at. MARS made me feel like home and something that I loved about this place is that there is inclusivity of all dogs, usually all disabled dogs are kept separately from the normal dogs but at MARS it was different, they were all together and were the happiest like that, thanks to the amazing mentors who are working towards making this world a better place for animals as well."

We thank for her help at the shelter 🌿 if you would like to intern with Daaman, kindly drop a note on [email protected]

They have never shied away from offering their magnanimous support wherever they could and are the people who propel us to keep doing the work that we do.

Thank you Greta and Eliza for blessing us with your presence and making our day. May God bless you both with an abundance of love and light 🌿🌻🕊️

Happy new year from all of ours to all of you and yours ❤️

2022 was a big year for us at Daaman. After more than 4 years of silence, we started making waves in this space. We were featured in two different publications and also became a subject of a documentary.

We have earned the love and adulation of many more folks who have come forward to support our work and enable us to march forward emboldened by their support.

Hope 2023 brings with it many more miracles. Can't wait to see what the year has in store for us 🌿

Taking the first step in putting ourselves out there!

For close to four years, our founders have been tirelessly working in the field of animal welfare without a pause and today we humbly stand in the light of the recognition we received in the form of this article!

Hearty thanks to for doing a wonderful coverage on Sarah and Gerry!

We march forward emboldened in our vision to uplift the lives of animals everywhere around us 🌿❤️

Back at the shelter, work continues day in and day out. With the winter rolling in, our dogs require more care than ever with some of them coughing and many of them falling sick!

There is an array of new entrants with different health issues dropping by at our shelter. And then there's our eldest dog, buddy who's been keeping us on our toes with his woeful cries as he's become completely immobile with his arthritis.

While we do take time out to sit down with our milestones and relish quiet moments, these days we have been swamped with work endlessly.

Featuring Naala, the sweetest dog you will ever meet. She has come a very long way from the time she entered the shelter and we hope with some physiotherapy, she will eventually start to walk once again! 🐾

Help can never go out of fashion and we can use all that we can get. If you would like to donate a meal, sponsor the salary for one of our workers or just generally contribute for a good cause, kindly make use of the link available in the link in bio or, make use of the following details below:
