The flood relief works at the shelter are being undertaken with full effect since yesterday! 🌀 Cyclone Michaung 🌀 The months from November to December are a call for precautionary measures here at Daaman! There are always preparations happening for the onslaught of rains and storms but suffice it to say, no matter how well we are prepared, Nature surprises us every time. Being based out of the coastal town of Mahabalipuram and occupying space right next to the beach adds to it! Cyclone Michaung has indeed left a mark on the city and we are no different. But rain or shine, we take it in our stride, go armed with our raincoats and umbrellas and continue our operations 🎉 The shelter has been flooded but this doesn't deter the dogs from having a good time. With Diwali just around the corner, we have been holding onto our hats and preparing for the storm. The months from October to December are especially tense around here since the rains bring forth tremendous changes at the shelter. The preparations extend to ensuring that all the thatched roofs have proper covering with tarpaulin sheets, double checking to see that the dogs are safe and warm inside their enclosures and most importantly staying vigil for thunders since these can easily startle the dogs and set them in a frenzy. And with the constant barrage of cracker noises everywhere, it is an especially stressful time for the dogs since they startle quite easily and sometimes, they get out and lost from their enclosures or get into a different territory altogether. On this note, we are looking to construct two new enclosures for our blind and paraplegic pups. The cost of constructing one enclosure amounts to about 2L and the total will draw to around 5L. ✨ Meet Vikram ✨ Vikram was reported by a rescuer from Porur who found this dog in quite a pathetic condition, roaming aimlessly on the streets with no sense of direction. Upon further investigation, we found that Vikram has a metasized tumor and he has developed Glucoma in both the eyes rendering him completely blind. Owing to his age, he has lost all his teeth and he has a neurological condition that makes him walk around in circles on a continuous loop. He would have to wear himself out to the point of exhaustion post which, he would drop down to sleep. We would have a constant eye out for Vikram to see if he's wandered into the thick of the trees. And sometimes when he cries into the night, our founder Sarah folds him in a blanket and sings him a lullaby to make him sleep into the night 🌿 Special needs dogs are called special for a reason. #storiesofmarswarriors Simran aka Simi 🐾 Simi is a dalmation pup who was purchased as a puppy. Embarking on her new life, Simi encountered a few unfortunate circumstances rendering her completely paralysed from the waist down. She was brought for treatment to the Vepery hospital where it was discovered that she was suffering from a heart condition. Dogs with this kind of enlarged heart condition have difficulty breathing and sustaining exercise. Congestive heart failure can develop as the heart gets weaker. It can otherwise be explained as a hole in the septum between the two atrial chambers of the heart causing a shunt, an abnormal pattern of blood flow. One could almost feel her wheezing abnormally whenever we used to pick her up. Simi arrived at the shelter completely desolate. She needed a lot of pampering and gentle love from us. She was having a hard time coping with the change in atmosphere but with the right kind of attention and care, Simi started improving gradually. It was brought to our notice a couple of weeks back that her heart condition was back to normal as revealed by her latest scans. Simi today is best pals with her sibling Azim ❤️ she's a gentle being who loves to cuddle and shower love on her caretakers and siblings. Swetha 🐾 Swetha was rescued from the streets of KK Nagar. She was reported by @preethiram_r who found her wandering on the roads, all alone fending for herself. Swetha was reported to us asking to be admitted to the shelter ❤️ hearing the go ahead from us, she was promptly picked up from the street and taken for her full body check up and vaccinations. She came to the shelter all jittery and scared and crying. But she's settled in well today with her enclosure mates Sriram and Jaspreet. Our shelter specializes in the care of paraplegic, blind and old dogs. Day in and day out, we keep getting rescue calls from different parts of Tamil Nadu reporting dogs in horrendous conditions, many of them abandoned and also hit by vehicles. They would be lying there helpless and surrendered to their fate until some kind hearted reporter stopped in his tracks and took a look and came forward to help! We are quite diligent about admitting dogs that are surrendered to the shelter. Our team maintains a dedicated waiting list of dogs that are to be admitted to the shelter owing to which, in some cases, we have to turn down requests for taking in healthy dogs. We have enough and more abandoned breeds as well as indie dogs who were heartlessly left at our gate or surrendered to the shelter citing different reasons their humans say such as relocating for work etc. It is quite disheartening to see these gentle beings discarded as a burden when it comes to us moving out of our comfort zone for their sake. Surrendering healthy dogs to a shelter like ours will remove the chance of helping a paraplegic or blind dog in its wake. Nayantara was brought to us from reporters at Thiruvotriyur 🦋 As is visible from the video, Nayantara needed extensive care partly because of her injuries. She was such a fragile kid who was awfully betrayed by the world. It took a lot of work, love and a ton of patience to see her blossoming into this beautiful girl that she is today and the journey here has been nothing short of a magical miracle. The increasing cases of people recklessly abandoning their grown dogs to fend for themselves on the streets has become a cause of huge worry amongst animal rescuers. Back at the shelter, work continues day in and day out. With the winter rolling in, our dogs require more care than ever with some of them coughing and many of them falling sick! There is an array of new entrants with different health issues dropping by at our shelter. And then there's our eldest dog, buddy who's been keeping us on our toes with his woeful cries as he's become completely immobile with his arthritis.
