Pain in the eye!
A simple injury of the eye can be quite painful for your pet.
Corneal ulcers, seen as a green colour in picture, is very common in breeds like Shih Tzu, Spaniels, pugs etc.

Reason for change in coat colour: The family had applied a "hair tonic syrup" recommended for hair loss religiously all over the body

3. It's that time of the Year

A pet dog had his fill of the Christmas cake, and slept through Christmas day and more!

4. Statement of the year

We will do anything for our pet but not bathe, brush, walk or medicate.

5. Emergency of the Year

Patient: Man (Women included) over the phone frantically declaring that their pet is in an emergency and needs immediate care and attention.
The Ark: if it's so, please rush to the clinic and we will be ready to receive your pet
Patient: OH! If I need to bring the pet, can I come tomorrow evening? I need to go for dinner.

The year 2023, in summary, is best described as a flash of time.
Our team has been able to help our furry friends by providing at least 17500 consults, 716 surgeries besides minor procedures, 18 blood transfusions, 9 units of canine blood donations and reaching a count of 27/89 advanced imaging techniques like CT/MRI during the year 2023.
We had achieved the distinction of being the first Indian Small animal clinic to present our findings at the prestigious super specialty Annual Congress of European Society of Veterinary Oncology at Alicante, Spain.
We have expanded our services by commissioning a laboratory at our nungambakkam clinic for a faster turnaround in arriving at a diagnosis, equipment for determing blood pressure, and evaluation of heart rate and rhythm.
Specialized teams have been set to focus on Cardiology, Ophthalmology and eye surgeries and Medical and Surgical Oncology.
Our Guardian Angel Program(GAP) has contributed to making life changing differences to several community pets. Bandit, Rocky, Ramu, Coco-Daisy, Stella, Bobby and Raja-Kutty can be declared as Warriors of the year 2023 for their "Never say Die" attitude and resilience.
Our special thanks to Guardian Angel Rishad and Guardian Angel Poppy for their contributions which continue to make a difference.
We step into 2024 with the confidence and support that you have all given us, without which these would not have been possible.

Ulcers in the cornea are easliy diagnosed using fluorescein dye which highlights the condition.

Anaesthesia and evaluation

"Is this needed when my pet is active and normal?"
A frequent question that we get from the family.
The answer is, its very much essential to evaluate the cell counts, liver and kidney functions and the protein content.
Its important that these values are within acceptable levels for the scheduled procedure which ensure that the pet goes through anaesthesia, recovery and healing in a predictable way.
If its an elective procedure, its better to postpone the surgery, determine the reason for the abnormal values and take corrective action.
If its an emergency or a critical procedure, it allows the surgeon and his team to choose a protocol which minimises the risk factors involved and protect the life of the patient.

Bladder stones in dogs are one of the reasons for a pet to be passing traces or clots of blood in the urine.
If your pet has been passing blood in urine, it's a sign of illness that needs to be checked by a veterinarian.

Importance of vaccination
Vaccination play a critical role in protecting your pet against many dangerous and fatal diseases. Every puppy or kitten needs to be vaccinated .
Veterinarians have spent decades educating people about the benefits of dog and cat vaccinations. This includes the kind of vaccines are necessary and how they should be scheduled. The purpose of vaccines is to mildly stimulate the immune system by having it recognize the antigens present. This way, if a dog or cat becomes exposed to the real disease, it's immune system will recognize it, and therefore be prepared to fight it off, or at the least reduce its effects.
Factors to be considered before starting the vaccination protocol for your pet:
a)   Age of the pet - Dog ( 6 to 7 weeks)
Cat ( 6 to 8 weeks)
b)  Medical condition- Pet should be healthy to take its vaccination shots , in case of any underlying medical condition , vaccination schedule should be delayed
C) Deworming history- Its important that the pet should be dewormed before starting the vaccination protocol
d)    Travel requirements and schedules
e)     Environment.
Vaccination schedule for Puppies.
a)    DHLPPI - Primary booster at 6 weeks of age. Puppy needs to have three shots of DHLPPI , 21 days apart from last dose. DHLPPI is five in one combination. Which stands for: D- Canine distemper, H- Canine infectous heptitis,L- Leptospirosis, P - Canine parvovirus and PI - Canine parainfluenza.
b)   Corona vaccine- Case of coronavirus Infection has reduced . Veterinarians have still recorded few cases in India. Unlike humans coronaviral Infection in puppies includes only gastrointestinal form which doesn't spread to humans.
Age - 9 to 1 0 weeks . 2 shots
c)     Kennel cough vaccine- This vaccine is against Bordetella , its a bacterial disease causing respiratory distress and is not part of the core vaccination
Age - 12 to 14 weeks d ) Rabies- Age 15 to 17 weeks of age.
Booster dose 21 days apart.

Toys form a hazard for pets depending on the material and the size of the toy.
A surgery, gastronomy or enterotomy, depending on the location of the foreign body may be necessary to retrieve the object.
Don't wait for long when you suspect your pet to have swallowed something AND if vomiting is present.
A soft golf ball toy(in picture) which was removed from the intestine of a French bull dog last week. The pet has recovered well after the surgery and is back looking for the golf ball.

A Portrait is good. A sock as a toy is a hazard.

Tyson, in picture, found out the hard way when the sock that he had swallowed got stuck in his intestine. He survived an intestinal surgery towards the removal of the sock. Not all may be so lucky.

Vegan Pets are increasing!

The number of pets, dogs especially, who are recovering from chronic skin conditions by being on a 100% vegetarian (vegan) diet is increasing. Not to mention other sensitivities.

Skin conditions can be due to what they eat, drink and come in physical contact with, hormonal imbalances and not necessarily through only bacterial, fungal or yeast infection/infestations.

Lassie, in picture, had severe hair loss and intense scratching and showed dramatic progress with a change to 100% vegetarian diet.
