Hoof care is essential for maintaining the health and well-being of horses. Here are some key aspects of hoof care:

1. **Regular Trimming**: Horses' hooves continually grow, so regular trimming is necessary to prevent overgrowth and maintain proper balance. The frequency of trimming depends on factors such as the horse's activity level, the terrain it's kept on, and individual hoof growth rates.

2. **Balancing**: Hoof balance is crucial for the horse's comfort and soundness. Trimming should aim to achieve a balanced hoof shape, with the correct angle and proportions. Imbalances can lead to uneven weight distribution and potentially cause lameness issues.

3. **Corrective Shoeing**: In some cases, horses may require corrective shoeing to address specific hoof problems or conformation issues. This could involve applying special shoes or pads to provide additional support and encourage proper hoof growth.

04/06/2024

Make sure your horse has a healthy diet with constant access to fresh water and as much opportunity to graze as possible. Horses may still need additional hard feed and forage to maintain their appropriate bodyweight.

Things you should do:-
1. Horses must have continuous access to fresh clean water.
2. Horses should be provided with as much opportunity to graze as possible. Twenty-four hour access is ideal. Without it they can develop disorders of the gut and stomach ulcers.
3. Not all pasture provide adequate nutrition and many will be too high in calories. Horses may still need additional hard feed and forage to maintain their appropriate bodyweight, particularly between late autumn and early spring.
4. Horses fed diets low in forage and high in concentrates (hard feeds such as cubes or grains) are at risk of digestive problems. Stabled horses should be given plenty of forage.
5. Horses should be fed only good quality, mould and dust-free forage.

Prevention of Colic in Horses:

The distress that a horse is in while it colics indicates that something is going wrong with the digestive system. Here are some common reasons your horse may be exhibiting colic symptoms:

• Ingesting fungus from moldy hay(Especially during rainy season)
• An accumulation of sand in the caecum is called sand colic
• Changes in feed
• Ingesting foreign objects can all trigger colic symptoms
• Some owners claim nervous horses can experience a change in management
• Senior horses in response to rapid air pressure changes may develop spasmodic colic. (No conclusive clinical information supports this claim.)

Our feed helps in avoiding colic symptoms and takes care of all other concerns about your horse’s diet!

31/05/2024

Fertility in stallions and mares is influenced by various factors, including genetics, age, health, nutrition, management practices, and environmental conditions. Here's an overview of key considerations for both:

**Stallions:**

1. **Genetics and Breeding Soundness**:

- Genetics play a significant role in stallion fertility. Breeding soundness evaluations, including semen analysis and physical examinations, are essential to assess reproductive health and potential fertility.

- Structural abnormalities, such as testicular defects or anatomical issues, can affect fertility.

2. **Age**:

- Fertility in stallions typically peaks between 5 and 12 years of age. However, older stallions may still maintain fertility if they are in good health and have proper management.

**Mares:**

1. **Reproductive Cycle**:

- Mares typically have a regular estrous cycle, with each cycle lasting about 21 days during the breeding season.

- Monitoring the estrous cycle and timing breeding activities correctly are essential for maximizing fertility.

2. **Health and Nutrition**:

- Similar to stallions, mares require proper nutrition and healthcare to support reproductive function. Adequate body condition, appropriate weight management, and a balanced diet are important.

- Regular veterinary care, including reproductive evaluations and vaccinations, helps maintain mare health and fertility.

1. *Fiber Content*: Forage, such as hay and pasture grass, is rich in fiber, particularly structural carbohydrates like cellulose and hemicellulose. Fiber is essential for maintaining proper digestive function in horses. It helps regulate the passage of food through the digestive tract, preventing issues like colic and impaction.

2. *Nutrient Provision*: While forage may not be as rich in certain nutrients as concentrated feeds, it still provides a significant amount of essential vitamins and minerals. These include vitamins A, D, and E, as well as calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. These nutrients are vital for overall health, including bone strength, immune function, and muscle function.

3. *Maintaining Weight and Condition*: Forage is a primary source of calories for many horses. It provides energy in the form of digestible fiber and fats. For horses that need to maintain or gain weight, increasing the amount or quality of forage in their diet is often the first step. Additionally, forage can help regulate weight by promoting a feeling of fullness, which can be beneficial for overweight horses.

"Eco-friendly feed options for horses focus on sustainability, reducing the environmental footprint, and ensuring the well-being of the animals. Here are some eco-friendly feed options and practices to consider:

1. **Organic Feeds**:
- Organic horse feeds are grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). They help protect soil health and reduce pollution.

2. **Locally Sourced Feeds**:
- Using locally sourced hay and grains reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation. It also supports local farmers and can be fresher and more nutritious for the horses.

3. **High-Fiber Diets**:
- Feeding horses high-fiber diets, such as hay, grass, and alfalfa, can be more sustainable. These feeds are closer to a horse’s natural diet and require less energy to produce compared to processed feeds.

25/05/2024

The amount of feed a horse requires depends on several factors, including its age, weight, activity level, metabolism, health status, and the type and quality of feed being provided. Here are some general guidelines:

1. **Forage**: Horses should have access to forage, such as grass or hay, throughout the day. The general recommendation is to provide 1.5% to 2.5% of the horse's body weight in forage daily. For example, a 1,000-pound horse would need 15 to 25 pounds of forage per day. Adjustments may be necessary based on factors such as the horse's metabolism, dietary needs, and availability of pasture.

2. **Concentrates**: Concentrates, such as grains or commercial horse feeds, can be added to the diet to provide additional calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals. The amount of concentrates required varies depending on factors like the horse's workload and nutritional requirements. A common recommendation is to feed 0.5% to 1.0% of the horse's body weight in concentrates per day, divided into multiple smaller meals.

3. **Body Condition Score (BCS)**: Monitoring the horse's body condition score is crucial for determining whether it's receiving an appropriate amount of feed. A BCS of 5 to 6 (on a scale of 1 to 9) is generally considered ideal for most adult horses. Adjust feed amounts accordingly to maintain or achieve the desired body condition.

23/05/2024

Here are some key nutritional considerations for maintaining the health of horses:

1. **Forage**:
- Horses are grazing animals and their digestive systems are designed for continuous forage intake. Good quality hay or pasture should be the foundation of their diet.
- Ensure that the forage is free from mold, dust, and other contaminants.
- Offer a variety of forage types to provide different nutrients and prevent boredom.

2. **Water**:
- Access to clean, fresh water is essential for proper digestion and overall health.
- Horses can drink a significant amount of water each day, so make sure they have constant access to it, especially during hot weather or after exercise.

3. **Concentrates**:
- Concentrates such as grains or commercial feeds can be added to the diet to meet energy and nutrient requirements, especially for horses with higher energy needs (e.g., performance horses).
- Choose concentrates that are specifically formulated for horses and match their age, activity level, and health status.
- Avoid overfeeding concentrates, as this can lead to digestive issues and obesity.

4. **Protein**:
- Protein is essential for muscle development, tissue repair, and overall health.
- Most forages provide adequate protein for maintenance, but additional protein may be needed for growing, pregnant, or lactating horses.
- Good sources of protein include legumes (such as alfalfa), soybean meal, and commercial feeds.

21/05/2024

Keeping horses hydrated during the summer months is crucial for their health and well-being, especially as they are prone to dehydration in hot weather. Here are some tips to ensure your horse stays hydrated:

1. **Access to Fresh Water**:

   - Provide unlimited access to clean, fresh water at all times. Ensure water sources are regularly cleaned and free from contaminants.

   - Consider using large water troughs or automatic waterers to ensure a constant supply of water, especially if your horse spends extended periods outdoors.

2. **Electrolyte Supplementation**:

   - Electrolytes are essential minerals such as sodium, potassium, and chloride, which are lost through sweating. Supplementing with electrolytes can help replenish these lost minerals and encourage water consumption.

   - Offer electrolyte supplements according to the manufacturer's instructions, particularly after strenuous exercise or during periods of heavy sweating.

3. **Soaked Feeds**:

   - Adding water to your horse's feed, such as hay pellets or beet pulp, can increase their water intake and provide additional hydration.

   - Soaked feeds are also easier to digest, which can be beneficial during hot weather when horses may be less inclined to eat dry forage.

4. **Shade and Shelter**:

   - Ensure your horse has access to shade and shelter to escape the sun and heat during the hottest parts of the day.

   - Provide shelter options such as run-in sheds, trees, or temporary shade structures in pastures and turnout areas.

5. **Misting Systems and Fans**:

   - Install misting systems or fans in barns or stables to help cool the air and provide relief from high temperatures.

   - Ensure proper ventilation to prevent heat buildup in enclosed spaces.

4. **Maintaining Healthy Hoof Environment**: Keeping the horse's environment clean and dry helps prevent hoof issues such as thrush (a bacterial infection) and fungal infections. Regularly picking out the hooves and ensuring the horse has access to dry, well-drained turnout areas can aid in hoof health.

5. **Proper Nutrition**: Good nutrition is essential for hoof health. Horses should receive a balanced diet with adequate levels of essential nutrients, including protein, vitamins, and minerals like biotin, zinc, and copper, which are important for hoof growth and strength.

16/05/2024

Achieving a lustrous coat for show horses involves a combination of proper grooming, nutrition, healthcare, and management practices. Here are some tips to help your show horses maintain a shiny and healthy coat:

1. **Balanced Nutrition**: A diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for promoting a healthy coat from the inside out. Ensure your horses receive high-quality forage, supplemented with a balanced concentrate feed that provides essential vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids, in particular, are known to promote healthy skin and coat.

2. **Regular Grooming**: Regular grooming is essential for stimulating blood circulation, distributing natural oils, and removing dirt and debris from the coat. Use high-quality grooming tools, including brushes, curry combs, and grooming mitts, to thoroughly clean and massage the skin and coat.

3. **Bathing**: Periodic bathing with a mild horse shampoo and conditioner can help keep the coat clean and shiny. Avoid excessive bathing, as it can strip the coat of natural oils and lead to dryness. Rinse thoroughly to remove all shampoo residue.

4. **Supplements**: Consider adding coat-enhancing supplements to your horses' diets, such as biotin, omega-3 fatty acids, or specific coat conditioners designed to promote coat health and shine. Consult with your veterinarian or equine nutritionist to determine the most suitable supplements for your horses.

5. **Regular Exercise**: Regular exercise not only promotes overall health and fitness but also contributes to a shiny coat by stimulating blood flow and circulation. Turnout time and regular exercise help horses maintain mental and physical well-being, which is reflected in their coat quality.
