Please don’t Kit-Nap Kittens

The Good Samaritan in all of us desperately wants to help animals when they are in need. But before you assume kittens have been abandoned, read our checklist below to confirm human intervention is required.

Are they truly “abandoned”?
>If you see an obvious “dumping” of kittens in a box or bag, or 1-2 kittens wandering around in an unexpected location, they should be given help immediately
>Gather them up and get them to a rescue or shelter immediately
>If you cannot get them into a shelter/rescue/vet right away and they are in need of urgent care, keep them warm in blankets inside the house
>If they appear to be hungry and they are babies (not weaned), feed them warmed (skin temp) kitten formula, NOT MILK, as dairy products will upset their tummies. (we like KMR brand)

If you come across a “kitten nest”
>Do not assume the mother has left them. She may be out looking for food or saw you approach and is waiting for you to leave
>Clean kittens with round bellies who are soundly sleeping are probably not abandoned
>If the kittens are in a safe location, observe from a distance and check on them every 2 hours. You will probably find that Mama has returned to the nest
>Do not interfere with Mama’s work. Let her hunt then nurse. You can set up a shelter near the nest with dry food/water. Nursing mothers need extra calories when feeding kittens

When there’s no sign of the mother anywhere. Kittens should only be removed from their nest if:
>There is no evidence of a mother cat after several hours
>If the location is dangerous and they are in obvious distress
>The kittens look weak, skinny and wet or matted
>Kittens are crying/mewing constantly each time you check on them
>The kittens have goopy discharge from eyes and nose and/or are very cold to the touch
