A Poultry Veterinarian ensures the health and well-being of poultry โ€” particularly domestic fowl such as chickens, ducks, and turkeys, which are raised and bred as livestock. A type of Avian Veterinarian whoโ€™s more interested in hens and roosters than in parrots and cockatiels, the Poultry Veterinarian is a Doctor whose mission is diagnosing and treating diseases in feathered farm animals so that the birds โ€” and, eventually, their eggs and meat โ€” are in tip-top shape.
When youโ€™re a Poultry Veterinarian, youโ€™re like a normal Veterinarian in that your duties include inspecting animals, establishing diet and exercise routines for them, and diagnosing diseases. You also deliver immunizations, prescribe and administer treatments, including medications, injections, and other therapies.
Poultry Veterinarian work with Farmers, Ranchers, and Poultry Raisers on their properties, where youโ€™re called in not only to treat sick birds but also to inspect pens, advise on the overall health of the flock, and suggest changes to food and shelter that might facilitate increased egg production or increased fowl growth to the benefit of the ownerโ€™s livestock business.

Dear Poultry Farmer,

The Role of โ€˜Stock Senseโ€™ in Poultry Farming is vital.

A good poultry farmer is constantly aware of the Welfare, Health and Environment of his flock. A farmer must closely observe the conditions within the farm and he/she must know how to spot any unusual behavior.

To monitor his flock a farmer can use โ€˜stock sense,โ€™ which relies on the following senses:

Look :- Watching bird behavior can help a farmer identify problems in the coop.
* Bird Distribution: The way the birds are gathered in coop is important.
-If the birds are huddling together or are confined to a certain area it could mean there is a cold draft in the coop.
-If they are huddled under brooder it means it is too cold.
-If they are standing away from the brooder lamp it means it is too hot.
* Bird Respiration: If the birds are panting or breathing abnormally it could be suggestive of heat stress or a respiratory disease.

Listen :- The sounds made by the birds is a good indication of what they are feeling.
* The chirpiness of the birds and their vocalization could indicate if they are hungry or cold.
* Respiratory sounds could mean the birds are suffering from an ailment.

Smell :- The odours from the shed can be a telling sign of the conditions within.
* The feed should smell fresh and not have a strong rancid smell or smell of mildew.
* A smell of ammonia in the shed could be due to diarrhoea or water spillage in the shed.
* Dead birds must be collected and taken out of the shed as soon as possible. ( Taste and Touch: Touch and taste is another good method of checking shed conditions. )
* A farmer should check the water and feed quality regularly.
* Bird Behaviour: When behaving normally birds divide their time between feeding, drinking and resting. Anything outside this can be seen as abnormal behavior.
* Litter Conditions: Farmers should look out for:
- Water spillage from drinkers, spilled feed, and other problems in the coop.
- It is also important to observe the nature of faeces. Faeces tinged with blood or undigested feed particles or unusual in nature (melena, diarrhoea, bile) should be a cause for concern.

Stock Sense will help a farmer become familiar with normal bird behavior and he/she will gradually be able to identify any changes in behavior. While observing bird behavior a farmer must regularly maintain and analyse farm records on Growth, Feed and Water Consumption, Bird Mortality, Feed Conversion ratio (FCR) etc. A combination of observation and record keeping will help the farmer to identify and correct any shortfalls in performance.

Stock sense combined with the farmerโ€™s knowledge, experience and skills in husbandry will produce a well-rounded farmer who will have the personal qualities such as Patience, Dedication and Empathy when working with the birds.

Veterinary roles in health (poultry and human health) -:
The supply-and-demand forces within the market place provide the major driving force for development of modern poultry production. Any commercial enterprise seeking continuing success in the marketplace must therefore:
1. minimize its costs of production;
2. ensure that its products are safe for human consumption.

Veterinarians also have to fulfill these dual responsibilities in a modern intensive poultry industry by:
โ€ข Achieving the most economical poultry production The veterinarianโ€™s role in poultry health involves close collaboration with several other professionals working in key roles in the poultry production operation.
โ€ข Achieving product quality for protection of public health The veterinarian also has a role in ensuring that poultry products are free from zoonosis and that they are microbiological safe and free from environmental residues. Experience proves that the profitability of a food industry or commercial organization is very quickly undermined by problems with unsafe poultry products.

Veterinarians play a vital role in safe-guarding both human and animal health, by securing an adequate supply of safe food and protecting humans and animals from the spread of zoonotic diseases. They are also vital to improving the productivity of livestock for the benefit of producers in particular and for the wider population in general. The overall aim of this expert consultation was to identify ways to strengthen the veterinary professionโ€™s role in improving food security, food safety and public health, and in increasing its impact on the livelihoods of producers ( Farmers), which is of primary importance to India and its future development.
Poultry immunity, health, and production are several factors that challenge the future growth of the poultry industry. Consumer confidence, product quality and safety, types of products, and the emergence and re-emergence of diseases will continue to be major challenges to the current situation and the strategic future of the industry.
Stockholders, veterinarians, farmers, and all the partners of the chain of poultry production need to be more involved in the current situation and the strategic future of the industry to fulfill human demands and ensure sustainable agriculture.
