The KERALA WORKING DOG CLUB. Kerala’s first active working dog club.

So culminates a 7 day Decoy School by Dev Puranik . And what 7 days it has been. We hope we have been able to play our part by hosting this decoy school and in turn contribute significantly to the rising wave of modern training techniques in protection work both for sports and otherwise in South India.

First and foremost congratulations to all the participants for successfully completing the school. We get it was not easy crawling into bed after decoying dogs till 3.30 am in the morning most days but you guys were a top bunch . We hope to see you guys soon and wish you all the very best in building strong dogs .

We thank all the handlers for taking their valuable time to bring their dogs out so that the students may learn to decoy well. You guys trusted them with your dogs and I am sure they will turn out to be fantastic decoys in the near future.

Dev Puranik and Himanshu have been with us since the first day of our club. Aaaaand we are a year old now. And what a year it has been. We started the Kerala Working Dog Club with a seminar conducted by Dev Puranik in Jan 2023. Over the year we have grown in strength both in handlers and in dogs. It is of great pleasure that we were able to pull off the Decoy School 2.0 and had such fun doing so. Sainath .shinde.92 who accompanied Dev this time around was an instant hit with everyone here. We can’t wait to have you guys back soon .

Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to go to the drawing board and start working on so many new things. But the memories of laughter, good company , tea , samosas and strong dogs are gonna linger for some time 🥹

We are glad to welcome our friend Sainath .shinde.92 to Kerala as he will be Joining us in the Decoy School 2.0 by Dev Puranik and will be assisting Dev during the school.

Sainath is a certified PSA trial decoy with tons of experience decoying various kinds of dogs. His presence in the decoy school will be so helpful to the students. I've always loved his style of decoying. He may not scream the loudest of boast about being the hardest trial decoy or anything but for me he is one of the most reliable trial decoys in India at the moment. He is consistent, safe and definitely knows how to step up when the occasion demands it. Kinda like Rahul Dravid among Indian PSA decoys 😁 .

It will be so awesome to see u soon in Kerala brother.

Eyes on the prize boy!

The importance of channeling is not to be overlooked. Every little element in protection plays a major role in the overall picture. They often bleed into one another and can be deceiving to many. If we build the foundation right, the tower will stand strong else it will undoubtedly collapse in front of a worthy opponent.

The reason why I like this dog is that he is showing extremely good clarity in his foundations. The temperament, grip, speed , bark , channeling is all where we want them to be and we have only worked him a short time. It is rare to see european dobermans that work well nowadays in India. To my knowledge, there are but a handful who partake in bitework also. Hopefully this big boy can pave a path to rescue the breed from being one just standing stacked at the end of a leather show leash and remind the world of the protective instincts this breed was bred for .

It is the work we do off screen , sessions small and big that makes the difference.

Training a dog, be it obedience or protection is not a sprint but a marathon. It depends on how you manage your time, how you provide structure to the dog's life and how you lay down the foundation. It's not always flashy sends and beautiful catches, it's the small sessions, the timing in marking and capturing the right behaviour and the ability in communicating properly with the dog that makes the difference. That is what sets you apart from the ordinary.

In my short time working with dogs , I have had the luck of interacting and learning from some of the best in the field in India. Do you know what sets them apart? Dedication and consistency. They don't spend hours training a dog for 3 days and then neglect the dog for the next 3 days. They are consistent. They are smart. They are willing to make sacrifices to attain their goal. Above all they love their furry companions . Learn from them , learn how to better your skills and the rest will follow.

No amount of online likes and comments are gonna replace what they have. it is the DEDICATION and CONSISTENCY that sets them apart .

And pls don't mistake this as some working dog thing. It's the same for pet dogs and It's the same principle for everything in life . Be it any profession or sport or hobby, you ask the best in the field, you are gonna get the same answer.

The power of PLAY!!!

Whiskey and Karun started their PSA journey a few months back. Whiskey who was a pet dog for most of her life made transition into the working world primarily through Play and it has done both of them a world of good. Both Karun and Whiskey have made huge strides in a short span of time.

Courage, Drive , obedience, mentality and a strong bond with the handler, play helps address all of them if done correctly.

Dev Puranik Alert!!!

We are glad to host Dev for a weekend filled with bark and bites. Dev is a certified PSA trial decoy and an even more amazing training decoy. He heads the largest working dog club in the country and has been the common factor in most number of teams achieving their titles in PSA in India. What makes Dev's visit special is the instrumental role that he has played over the months in setting up our club and helping us out whenever in need.

This is an opportunity for anyone who wants to learn about PSA and protection dogs in general to interact and learn form a top tier competitor in the sport. Any one who is interested to attend the weekend has the option to being their dogs to have Dev himself work them. Visitors without dogs are also welcome as it will be a weekend where you can learn a lot about decoying, protection dogs, advanced obedience and dog sports.

We had our last club session of the year today . As we look back on what has been an eventful year for us we can’t but be happy and proud for the events of last year. From starting a working dog club in Kerala to bagging the first win on the field, from having equipments made in our own backyard to try out on dogs to having some of the finest the world has to offer, from having two dogs and two handlers to more than 12 dogs and 10 handlers, from having people come in and leaving , from making new friends and loosing some along the way, from having people say that something like this would never take root in Kerala to them admitting that they were wrong - the year has been eventful to say the least . As we approach our anniversary, we have a lot of people to be thankful for. @the_lazy_malinois , @titaniumk9s @waywardsam24 , @himanshu.__ , @sunita_pundirs , @alan.alangeorge , @unbeatabledobermans, @romsnraks_official @blueflashpets @anarchyk9s @canidconnection and many other friends have stood by us in this journey.
