The name "parrotfish" is derived from their fused teeth, which bear close resemblance to a bird's beak. Their teeth are specialized for scraping algae and invertebrates from coral and rocks. Another set of teeth (pharyngeal teeth), are located on the floor and roof of their throats. The pharyngeal teeth crush the ingested materials.

.
As arowana is a territorial and aggressive fish so please do not keep it with any other fish especially if your tank is just big enough for the arowana itself.

✓Yes there are several examples of arowana living in harmony with some other similar sized fishes but my focus is on the longevity of life span of individual fish rather than the beauty of tank.

✓Of course the beauty of tank is also important but the joy of seeing fish grow day by day and achieve its maximum size and live a long healthy live is paramount.

.
✓Here try to concentrate on this point here that there is no evidence of any arowana reaching beyond 10 or 12 years of age in a community tank.

✓There are some examples tough of full sized arowana living in a community but they are all housed in medium to large sized ponds.

✓So, to my best understanding the option of algae eaters to be kept with arowana is out of consideration.

✓Now with option of algae eaters out there is really not much scope of any biological decompose-rs like shrimps. only option is left with good bacteria flourishing in the ceramic tubes inside sump filters or canister filters.

Angelfish Lay Eggs in Egg Layers
Fish either give birth to live babies or they lay eggs that are fertilized and hatched later. Angels fall in the egg laying category. The process for angelfish egg laying and hatching are:

The female prefers to deposit her eggs in neat rows on a piece of submerged slate leaned against a wall of the tank.
The male will follow up behind her and use his own papilla to fertilize each egg individually.
If the fertilization was successful, you'll notice the fry begin wiggling their tails in about two days, even though they're still attached to the slate.
The fry will become free swimming sometime around day five, and they will begin eating on their own around day seven once they have absorbed the yolk sacks from their eggs.

Flowerhorns are extremely aggressive towards most tank mates, but some tankmates can coexist with flowerhorns. Flowerhorns tend to be aggressive towards anything entering their “territory” but still act like puppy dogs to their owners.

Internal filters are very common because they are powered by a water pump & have a box which contains a sponge. Internal filter sits within the fish tank. The water is sucked in & it passes through the sponge which removes debris & also the sponge holds good bacteria which helps in biological filtration.

Such filters can be operated using air pump or they are power filters.

👉Famous internal filter is
🎉sponge filter,
🎉 canister filter.

**Sponge filters have been used since ages but still people choose to prefer them but they dislike the sponges which affect the appearance of fancy tanks.

**Canister filters can provide better performance & they are able to provide mechanical, chemical & biological filtration.

**Canister filters that are located inside aquarium can used sponges for both mechanical & biological filtrations,
but modern canister filters contain another sponge for housing higher levels of good bacteria, & one of the sponge can be replaced at a time without losing all of your good bacteria.

They can offer adjustable water flow & hobbyists can change direction of nozzle which sprays water.

🔴Pros & Cons of Internal Filter:

✓Internal filters are smaller & best for smaller aquariums.

✓The running cost of internal filter is low. Also they are inexpensive.

✓They can remove dirt very well & sponge filters are very helpful in fry tank because fry can eat leftover food attached to sponge.

✓Internal filters produce lots of clutter in the aquarium.

✓Sometimes you will have to replace the whole media, causing a new cycle.

✓ Internal filters can be slightly fiddly when maintaining.

The fish get their name from an ancient clan of warriors that were called the “Bettah.” They later came to be known as fighting fish as a result of the growing popularity of fish fighting as a sport during the 1800s, particularly in Thailand.

Today We Discuss About

✓They have a flattened silver body with occasional black spots along their sides and toward their back fin.
✓The fin on the stomach is a bright reddish orange, while a**l and caudal fins are marked with bold alternating black and orange stripes.
✓The dorsal fin is darker, standing tall with some orange markings.

Flagtail characins grow to 13.8 inches (35 centimeters) in length.

✓Flagtail characin can be found in central and western Amazonian tributary rivers, as well as the Amazon River basin.
✓They prefer freshwater and most commonly occupy the bottom layer of the body of water they live in.
✓They take part in the seasonal migration of the Rio Madeira basin, which corresponds with annual flooding.
✓As the surrounding forests become flooded, characins enter the previously dry area to find food.
✓Flagtail characins prefer water temperatures between 71.6 and 78.8 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 26 degrees Celsius).
✓This species is considered potamodromous, meaning that they migrate only within freshwater rivers and streams.

✓Flagtail characins are a microphagous species, one whose diet consists primarily of detritus and other fine material rich in microorganisms which are found in the substrate.
✓At the Zoo, they eat a gel diet.

&_

✓An oviparous, or egg-laying, species, flagtail characin migrate upriver to spawn.

Fish can become stressed during winter months, leading to health problems. Follow these seven simple tips to help your fish to continue to thrive when the temperature drops.

🐟1. Avoid drafts
Make sure that your fish tanks are not exposed to cold drafts at night – close doors, use door stoppers and window drapes to assist.

🐟2. Check temperature
It may sound obvious but take the time to check the temperature of your tank with a thermometer. Make sure the water temperature hasn’t dropped below ideal conditions for your fish.

🐟3. Check the size of your heater
Use the manufacturer’s recommendations to check that your heater is big enough for your tank, or have a chat to one of our Petbarn team members.

🐟4. Check water parameters
Eliminate any other stresses and ensure that your water quality is correct for the fish you keep. Purchase a quality testing kit and test your water regularly. To prevent issues, keep the tank clean and check that your filters are fully operational.

🐟5. Avoid large water changes
Filling the tank with cold water can reduce the temperature significantly, leading to stress and disease. Try more frequent, but smaller, water changes instead.

🐟6. Treat with medication as needed
Fish under temperature stress can commonly suffer from fungal disease or white spot. Keep an eye out for these, and treat with medication as needed.

🐟7. Feed a nutritious diet
Boost the immune systems of your fish and ensure they are eating a quality diet. Frozen foods can also be a big help in adding vitamins and minerals to the diet.

This is one of the most commonly asked questions among African Cichlid keepers. Chances are sooner or later you will observe your cichlids rubbing themselves on objects and substrate in the aquarium (also known as flashing).

Bellow we will attempt to answer the question above by exploring different reasons as to why that is.

Firstly it is important to say that this is not necessarily a cause for concern, however depending on other factors there could be an underlying issue with your fish. This behavior to some extent makes up part of their natural character and should be disregarded as nature.

🔵 on objects and rocks:
Cichlids “scratch” themselves on rocks and other objects in a motion which sees the fish bounce off in controlled way and thus not harming itself. This is completely natural and the fish may have had an itch. Although natural this can obviously be a dangerous situation as if you have sharp rocks or objects in your set up the fish can injure itself and/or lose some scales which although may not be fatal they will cause significant stress on the fish. Most African cichlids due to their aggressive nature are rather good at healing so with some care your fish will eventually recover.

🔵 on the substrate/sand:
Another interested behaviour observed in African Cichlids is when they rub themselves on the substrate/sand. This is more common in Haps and Peacocks from what I have observed due to Mbuna being vegetarian and primarily feeding on algae off rocks in the wild. Haps and Peacocks often disturb the sand by bouncing off it in order to release any food particles that may be trapped there. I have observed many times one fish flashing off the bottom and another fish following in it’s cloud of sand looking for food.

Species such as Fossorochromis Rostratus even sift through the sand and filter feed as they would in the wild. They may also be scratching themselves as stated above.

🔵 is it a cause for concern?
As discussed above this behavior is natural in African Cichlids as long as they are not injuring themselves, don’t have any visible signs of parasites such as Ick (white spots) and are not constantly doing it. If you observe any of these extra symptoms on your fish then you need to consider a course of action. Your fish may be suffering from a form of external parasite like Ick, in which case they will constantly rub themselves on anything they can find, if this continues it will eventually be fatal, if you see visible signs of external parasites or injury it is important to either re-locate the fish to a hospital tank or preferably treat the entire aquarium with the appropriate medication.

Unfortunately parasites are extremely contagious so if one fish has it chances are all your fish do, which really signifies the need for a quarantine tank before adding fish to your main set up. Usually if the cure process is started fast enough the fish will recover. Keeping up with maintenance and providing the correct parameters for your fish helps keep them strong and healthy.

🔵 :
Observing your fish for periods throughout the day will help you understand their behavior and spot anything out of the ordinary such as constant flashing and/or signs of illness. This can be difficult however with everyday life taking over! If you see something out of the ordinary don’t wait, research the symptoms and see if you should be worried or not.

✓ It all began with the Malaysians and their inclination for these bulky-headed fish, known as Karoi or warships.

✓The flowerhorn fish found a place in the hearts of the Taiwanese, who considered them harbingers of prosperity.

✓Soon enough, a feng shui connect was established. The nuchal hump, or protruding forehead resembled the forehead of the Chinese God of longevity. Some of the fish’s body parts matched other divine creatures, elevating its importance.

✓The black markings on the sides sometimes look like Chinese alphabets. Its brightly colored appearance made it an attractive and coveted fish.

✓Aggressive at first, these fish form a deep bond with their owners over a period as they get tamed, especially when the owners feed them with their hands. Its red eyes were known to cast the evil spirits away.

✓The flowerhorn cichlid finds its ancestors in the red devil cichlids (Amphilophus labiatus) and trimac cichlids (Amphilophus trimaculatus), from Central America along with the hybrid blood parrot cichlid from Taiwan.

✓These fish were bred together in Malaysia, giving us the flowerhorn cichlid. Also called the Luo Han flowerhorn, they arrived in America during the nineties.

✓ They grow up to 12 inches and will keep you company for 10 to 12 years.

✓ Considering their size, they must be kept in a 20 to 30 gallon tank, in waters with a pH level of 7.4 to 8.0 and a temperature of 80-85°F.

✓Their diet includes fleshy and live bloodworms, mealworms, small fish, earthworms, minced meat and shrimp. Their vegetarian delights are spinach, peas and lettuce.

“ ”

🟡How would you like to have an aquatic pet that is not very different from humans?

✓ Well, the flowerhorn fish, being a product of human effort, has managed to pick up a few human qualities.

✓ For starters, it is an aggressive fish, and very territorial. Keeping more than one in a tank is not recommended, but if you insist, do separate them with a sturdy glass partition and give them time to start tolerating each other.

✓This applies to two fish belonging to the opposite s*x as well (Mars and Venus, anyone?).

✓ The aggressiveness scales new heights, as a flowerhorn can also injure itself if the tank accessories are too rough on the edges.

✓ It sometimes likes to launch itself, head first on to the glass walls, which explains the presence of several disfigured single fish in captivity.

✓Be very careful while feeding it as it sometimes likes to bite the hand that feeds it. Among other human qualities, they also happen to have a ravenous appetite for food and reproduction as well.

✓Controversy cannot keep its hands off a fish that is termed “a hybrid of hybrids”. Much noise has been made about how fish breeds have been modified to increase their attractiveness quotient.

✓While the ecologists continued their protests, the breeding community made hay as the popularity of the flowerhorn fish soared.

✓ It was during this period that the breeders worked overtime to support the burgeoning demand, leading to a drop in the “quality”.

✓The so-called good-looking fish earned returns and the unattractive and disfigured ones were saddled with the store owners.

✓ Not knowing what to do with the leftovers, they were thoughtlessly dumped in the drains of Singapore and Malaysia.

✓These little horrors ran riot with their unrestrained breeding and demolished the local flora and fauna.

✓ Many local aquatic species became extinct, with the flowerhorns eating or killing whatever came their way.

🟡 Cichlids are an extremely diverse family of fishes, most of which are found in rift lakes in Africa.

🟡There are more than 500 species in just three lakes: Victoria, Malawi, and Tanganyika.

🟡Most are specialized feeders, which allows many different types to live together without much competition.

🟡Among the predatory species, tastes differ along with variations in jaw shape. Some mollusc eaters crush the shells of their prey and eat them whole, while others grab the extended foot of the prey and suction them out of the shell.

🟡Invertebrate eaters may pick through algae beds or dig through the muddy bottom searching for food.

🟡Species that feed on zooplankton usually filter feed in the open water. And although there are many piscivorous species of cichlids, some eat only eggs, larvae, or adults, or certain body parts of other fishes, including scales, fins, and even eyes!

🟡New species of cichlids are discovered every year. Because scientists don't know how many types there are, creating conservation plans is difficult.

🟡 As with all animals that are intensely specialized in adaptations or behavior, cichlids are vulnerable to habitat changes, such as pollution and the introduction of exotic species, which can increase predation, competition, and hybridization.

🟡 Cichlids are also threatened by overfishing and collection for the pet trade.

🟡Many types of cichlids are mouth-brooders. When spawning begins, male blue tilapias dig a pit with their mouths and fins in shallow water.

🟡They actively defend their territories from other males while courting females. An interested female lays eggs by the male, which he then fertilizes.

🟡The female takes the eggs in her mouth and swims off while the male awaits another female (although in a few tilapia species, males defend the female).

🟡The female incubates and hatches her eggs in her mouth. For about a week, the female allows the young to swim back inside her mouth if danger is nearby.

🟡 Some cichlids are substrate-spawners. With this type of reproduction, the female lays a string of eggs, which the male fertilizes. The male and female then guard the eggs until they hatch.
