Department of Plastic And Reconstructive Surgery, R.G. Kar Medical College The Unit is situated in the 1st floor of casualty building. It is a 23 bedded ward, with HDU & separate OT facility. of India.

Departmental Information

A) Special Clinic – Cleft Clinic, Hand Clinic , Leprosy Surgery Clinic - once monthly

B) Indoor - Running 70 bedded Plastic Surgical department. Also performing many operations referred by other departments like General Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Dental Surgery, ENT

C) Emergency Plastic Surgery – trauma Surgery. D) Post Doctora

l course :
The Department has obtained the approval from MCI for conducting post doctoral course (MCh) –
plastic Surgery from the academic session – 2010, with an annual intake of 3 students. E) Establishment of Upgraded Burns ward :
The department has got approval from the Department of Health & FW to open a Burn Unit with HDU
Operation Theater and a Laboratory. F) Establishment of Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery Unit – 15 bedded
The department has been selected as a Nodal Center for Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery and received a fund of Rs 54 lac from the Department of Leprosy, Govt of West Bengal. Reconstructive Surgery ward has been constructed for the purpose of reconstructive surgery towards the leprosy patients . Here operations are performed round the year and may be a training center and center of excellence. G) Establishment of Cleft lip & Palate care Unit
A cleft lip and palate care unit has been established for the purpose of providing a complete treatment
including orthodontics , surgery, speech therapy, counselling under one roof and involving many
departments and multiple institutes like NIHH Bonhoogly and Dr R Ahmed Dental College Kolkata. This project is being funded by NRHM , Govt. The Department has received a grant of Rs 47 lac from NRHM. H) Establishment of Hand and Trauma Reconstruction Surgery Unit
The Department is on the way of establishing the said unit in the 7th floor of the trauma building by kind permission of The Principal, R G Kar Medical College & Hospital. This will start functioning with the opening of the trauma center and beginning of trauma care service. I) District Leprosy Reconstructive Surgical Service
The department is providing this service since 2005 and presenty covering 8 districts of West Bengal. The faculty of this department is travelling to the districts, staying there for 2-3 days and performing reconstructive surgery in the district and sudivisional hospital. This program was appreciated by DG Leprosy Delhi, and WHO.

10. Social activity

A) Rural and District LRCS Program

In collaboration with Department of Health and Family Welfare , Leprosy Division , Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery , RGKar Mdical College is conducting LRCS operations and workshops in different Districts and Subdivisional Hospitals covering 8 districts of West Bengal. Dr Rupnarayan Bhattacharya has been selected as nodal officer for LRCS surgery and a member of the Leprosy review committee. B) Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery Unit - Nodal Centre in RG Kar Medical College

In appreciation to this endeavor for promotion of LRS in RG Kar Medical College, it has been selected as a Nodal & Referral Centre and Dr R N Bhattacharya as Coordinating Officer for Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery. The department received a grant of Rs 54,00,000 /- (fifty four lakh) for the purpose of procuring equipments and instruments which already is done. Future Plan is to promote it as a center of excellence in the field of Leprosy reconstructive surgery. C) District Cleft lip / Palate surgical camp

The department has conducted camps in District hospitals of 4 districts for repair of cleft lip & palate. D) Complete cleft care Unit

Though surgery for cleft lip & palate is being done for a long time, the present concept of Cleft treatment is different. A Cleft lip & Palate Unit is formed to deliver the present concept of multidisciplinary approach to these patients where orthodontic service, speech therapy, counselling and surgical service will be provided under one roof. Partners :
a) NIHH : Collaborative work is being done with National Institute of Hearing Handicapped, Bonhoogly with state of the art Audio and Speech lab and they have agreed to provide a speech therapy unit in this center. b) Dr R Ahmed Dental College: The authority has been agreed to work together and to help in Orthodontic T/t. c) NRHM - has approved a grant of Rs 47,00,000/- ( Forty seven lakh) only for the purpose of
completing the infrastructure. E) Poor man’s Esthetic & Cosmetic Surgery Unit

Government has approved the project of establishing the above mentioned unit against nominal charges ( to RKS of the hospital) .

11. Clinical Research Group
As the scope of clinical research is limited in the hospital set up due to infrastructural inadequacy in the field of basic research, a research team has been formed with the scientists and faculty of different institutes. Laboratory work - CGCRI, IIT KGP, Engineering College Jadavpur, IIT Gwahati. Animal Study- Department of Surgery, Immunology – West Bengal University of Animal Science, Belgachia. Clinical Work- Department of Plastic Surgery , R G Kar Medical College. This team concept is working nicely in the field of clinical research and this team has published several papers in national & international journals.

12. Future Projects

a) Rural plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Unit: is planned and a proposal is submitted to the Department of Health & FW. It will cover 8 districts of west Bengal. The site selection and construction of OPD is complete. b) To provide better & comprehensive service to the patients , establishment of the following units are planned -
1. Trauma Reconstructive Surgery Unit – in 7th floor of the upcoming Trauma Center.
2. Hand Surgery Unit. - in 7th floor of the upcoming Trauma Center
3. Gender Reassignment Surgical Service Unit

c) Departmental expansion – to convert it into a 70 bedded Reconstructive Surgery Unit in the proposed 9th floor of the Casualty Building. d) Establishment of a Clinical Research Laboratory within the department to work in the field of Tissue Engineering. Nature of operations performed:
Microvascular Surgery - Head neck, limb

Upper limb - Nerve Injury, Brachial plexus injury, Cut tendon injures – repair, Tendon transfers for radial/ median/ulnar neuropathy , Post burn contractures – release & STSG/Flap Coverage, Syndactyly / Polydactyly, Malunited/ Fracture Metacarpal & Phalanges – ORIF with miniscrew & plates. Vascular malformation, Carpal tunnel Syndrome

Lower limb - Burn and post traumatic wound coverage, Different types of tendon transfers, Correction of different congenital abnormalities, Vascular malformations, Amputation, Coverage of foot ulcers in diabetes / leprosy

Trunk - Coverage of pressure sore, Radiation ulcers, Surgery on breast

Head neck - Rhinoplasty, Reconstruction of ear, Nose, eye lids, Oro pharyngeal malignancy

Oncoplastic surgery - Head Neck Malignancy, Neck Dissection, Carcinoma tongue – Hemiglossectomy & Neck dissection

Burn & Burn reconstruction - Coverage of raw areas, Release of contractures & reconstruction, Release of compartment syndrome

Maxillofacial - Correction of malocclusion of teeth class II / class III, Augmentation Genioplasty, TM joint ankylosis, Max facial injury - Fracture of maxilla / Mandible / Zygoma - ORIF by mini plates & screws

General Skin grafting in post traumatic / post burn ulcer

Cosmetic Surgery – Rhinoplasty, Augmentation & reduction mammaplasty, Liposuction, Hair restoration, Laser

Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery – Wrist drop, Ulnar & Median Claw hand, foot drop, Lagophthalmos

Faculties and doctors of Dept. of Plastic Surgery, RG Kar MCH, have been working on LRS for quite a long time and have conducted LRS workshops and performed LRS in different District Hospitals in collaboration with Directorate of Health Service- Leprosy, Dept of Health & FW, Govt of West Bengal. In appreciation to this endeavor for promotion of LRS in RG Kar Medical College, it has been selected as a Nodal & Referral Centre and Dr R N Bhattacharya as Coordinating Officer for Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery

G) Cleft lip & Palate care Unit A cleft lip and palate care unit has been established for the purpose of providing a complete treatment including orthodontics , surgery, speech therapy, counselling.It is a nodal centre for cleft patients.
