Safer products to use when you need a flea, tick or Heartworm preventive 🦟🐾

If you live in a high-risk environment, a chemical "preventive" may be necessary at times. And while every chemical pesticide carries its own set of potential side effects, there are some products that are generally safer than others. Before you give a chemical pesticide ⚠️, there are some risks and ingredients you should be aware of to make the best (and safest) choice for your pet. 🐶🐱

If you are looking for safer options or natural alternatives, you don’t want to miss this week’s Inside Scoop episode! 🙌

This Sunday we’ll be joined by Dr. Judy Morgan and Dr. Jean Dodds to discuss:

Last week I saw a weak and confused diabetic cat. His blood sugar levels were very low, he was struggling but he was still very much alive. And that is all thanks to his owners.

The mucky sticky face he had was due to the honey they had rubbed into his gums. He resisted a little so ended up with sticky whiskers! Their reaction saved him from going into a seizure. They recognised the signs of his hypo, they reacted, they did a simple but life saving job of applying that honey. He is here because of them.

It is situations like these that give me that drive to teach and share important information like this. Just one saved pet is worth every hour I spend researching, writing, and delivering content. I take my hat off to this cats owners, amazing life saving first aid right there!

Vet schools need to teach a variety of surgical sterilization techniques for dogs (cats have a different reproductive cycle and are not as negatively impacted by having no s*x hormones throughout life).

Everyone agrees that dogs should not have unwanted litters, which means having dogs sterilized is a critical part of population control.
However, research shows the sterilization technique matters, when it comes to long-term health outcomes.

Traditional spaying and neutering (aka des*xing) are the only techniques vets are currently taught, and removing ALL s*x hormones, especially when dogs are very young, comes with a host of potential irreversible, lifelong consequences. A growing body of research shows that early neutering can cause long-term health and behavior problems in dogs due to their inability to produce s*x hormones.

Sterilization without g***d removal (i.e., hysterectomies for females, vasectomies for males) are better alternatives, for the preservation of important hormones, but these techniques aren’t taught in vet schools (yet). Read today’s free pet health blog (link below) to learn more about des*xing research, and how to support the hormones of your spayed/neutered pet.

Back on the nail cutting theme again! That’s because they are so very important.

If you cut a nail right back as far as you can up against the pad, you will be cutting through bone. Not only will that hurt, it can cause many problems in the future.
