Breed of the Week - Doberman
Dobermans are tall, sleek and muscular dog that is best-known for its role as a guard dog. This often gives people the impression that they are an aggressive breed. However, there is so much more to this beautiful and intelligent animal and they have many traits that may surprise you. While most people are aware of the physical characteristics of these dogs, there are plenty of things that people do not know about this canine breed.Some Fun Facts about them are :
* THEY’RE A FAIRLY NEW BREED -The breed originated in Germany and began to take form in the Early 1800’s , making it less than 150 years old.
* EAR AND TAIL DOCKING SERVED A PURPOSE - Doberman tails are very thin and sensitive, and can break a lot easier than other dogs'. Additionally, floppy ears prevent air from easily flowing into the ear canals and can cause ear infections.
* EXTREMELY ATHLETIC & INTELLIGENT DOGS - Dobies have been used for a variety of jobs and sports including police work, scent tracking, coursing, diving, search and rescue, therapy, and guiding the blind.
* WAR HEROES - Kurt the Doberman was the first canine casualty in the 1944 Battle of Guam during WWII. He went ahead of the troops and warned them of the approaching Japanese soldiers.
* BREEDING IS MAKING THEM MORE GENTLE - Since Dobermans are transitioning from guard dogs to loving companions, breeders are moving them away from aggressive qualities. Although Dobies have a softer personality today, all dogs are different and a lot of their temperament is dependent on proper training.
A German named Louis Doberman is credited with developing the Doberman pinscher breed in the late 1800s. He was a tax collector and wanted a fierce guard dog to accompany him on his rounds. Doberman also kept the local dog pound, where he had access to many strays.
