Today, while returning from Guwahati, I got a call when I was around Koliabor. The call went like these:-
Dr XYZ:- Hello doctor saab, I am Dr xyz working for so and so international feed additive company.
Me:- Hello, please tell me.
Dr XYZ: Actually, I am making a presentation for the training sales force of a feed company.
Me:- Can you please elaborate more.
Dr XYZ:- I actually work for an international feed additive company and working in poultry sector for last so many years. But the company has launched Pig Feed and now wants me to develop a training programme for its sales force.
Me:- So, how can I help you?
Dr XYZ:- Actually, recently I made some field visits and many farmers have mentioned that they follow your instructions. So, I should talk to you. So, I am calling you.
Me:- OK. So, what do you want from me.
Dr XYZ:- Actually, I was looking at the pig population of India and it says it's around 10 million. Is this nos. correct.
Me:- See, these nos. are from 20th Livestock census 2019 and you can find the details if you refer to it.
Dr XYZ:- It also says NER has around 40% of the total pig population.
Me:- Yes, that is correct. However, the Indian Pig industry was affected by ASF in 2020 and we may not have the same numbers now. The 21st Livestock census is going to happen now and we don't have an exact number now. However, we can easily say that our pig population has gone down after the ASF outbreak. So the data may not be reflecting the correct scenario now.
Dr XYZ:- What should I tell the sales force.
Me:- Tell them the actual scenerio.
Dr XYZ:- During our survey with the feed dealers they said that around 60% of the pigs are cross bred looking at the feed use.
Me:- The actual feed consumption in NER is not known. An exercise was done by the veterinary department some two years back, however, the actual figure is not available. Only the feed companies will know what is the nos. they ramp up every year. However, we can say that though the pig population has decreased due to ASF but uses of commercial feeds by the modern farmers have increased.
The pig Feed nutritional science is a very developed area m today and the feed company should engage a nutritionist or some consultant to do the presentation.
Dr XYZ:- Actually, I am also a vet and I have done my BVSc from Ranchi. It is not that I don't know about piggery. TND breed has been developed by Ranchi Veterinary College.
Me:- I am sure you are an expert. So, what do you want from me.
Dr XYZ:- I have come across so many farmers in lower Assam in my recent visit, who told me that you are the Pigman of India and I should ask you for this information.
Me:- But it's a commercial venture for the feed company. Why they don't engage someone who is an expert in this field. I know you are selling your additives to them but they should consult an expert on this.
Dr XYZ:- Actually the poultry feed company wanted to launch pig Feed in the market. They asked me for formulations. I consulted my counterparts in Phillipines and got the formulation. I shared it with them. They have launched Pig feeds on the basis of the same. Now, they are asking me to train their sales force on it. They don't want to hire a consultant and pay. They are asking me to do it.
Me:- If you are scouting for free knowledge on the behalf of the feed company, I can only share what is already available in the public domain. If you want my expert advice, I am sorry I can't give you free advice for a commercial venture. Moreover, we have our own feed brand called BigPig.
Dr XYZ:- I understand. I know you have done a lot of work in piggery sector. I shall definitely meet you in my next visit to Assam. That is why you are called the PigMan of India.
Me:- Please share your product details in my WhatsApp. However, we don't promote any growth hormones or antibiotics. We only use sustainable products. We don't want to make Indian piggery sector like west where they are now taking two steps back and talking about less use of antibiotics and growth hormones. Also, we don't want to make Indian piggery sector like Broiler Industry. It's a blessing in disguise that we are starting late in commercialisation from West and only adopt the best and sustainable practices.
Dr XYZ:- Thank you doctor saab. It was really nice talking to you. We will definitely meet next time I visit Assam. I now know why you are called the PigMan.

Russian Pig Industry sets sights on India. In November 2023, Russian Pig Industry resumed exports to India after it was suspended in 2020. It plans to export 300 tons of pork to India every month.
This proves our hypothesis that Indian pork consumption is going to grow by the year. Here is an opportunity for the farmers to increase their production as there is a real scarcity in the market.

Training on Scientific and Commercial piggery.
The people of North East India are raising pigs for generations. Needless to say what delicacy and emotional attachment pork has in the life and culture of the people of the NER.
There is huge demand for pork meat in NER which the traditional method of pig rearing is unable to meet. As a result NER imports most of the pigs that it consumes from other states in India. This not only affects the money flow out of the region but also doesn't ensure supply of quality pork meat as the supply chain is totally unorganised and all kinds of animals are sent to NER.
Symbiotic Foods Pvt Ltd, Tezpur was founded by Manoj Kumar Bosumatary and Khanindra Kalita with the objectives to change the piggery industry in the NER. The company was established with the aim to produce quality piglets and upgradation of farmers knowledge in Scientific and Commercial piggery. The company runs its own breeding farm near Tezpur and produces more than 5000 piglets annually. It is also working with thousands of farmers in NER to increase the pork production in NER and make it a piggery hub.
The company is involved in all aspects of piggery value chain right from production of quality piglets through scientific breeding programme, breed improvement, fattening, production of quality feeds, training of farmers, and processing of pork into value added products like Bacon, Sausages, Salamis, Kebabs, Ham etc apart from various cold cuts.
Shri Manoj Kumar Bosumatary, CEO & Co-founder, an ex-banker , is trained in Europe and has been awarded with Assam Gaurav Award 2021 by GoA for his pioneering work in the field of Piggery. He is also the founding President of North East Progressive Pig Farmers Association.
He has trained more than 3000 youths in North East India in Scientific and Commercial piggery since Nov 2017.
The highlights of the 3 days residential programme to be held at Symbiotic Foods Training Institute, Ghoramari, Tezpur Assam are the inputs in both scientific theory and practical. The participants get an opportunity to see how a large commercial farm is run on a day to day basis. The course covers:
