“Have you heard of elephants trumpeting in joy to welcome someone?” Read more to know about the man these gentle giants so loved and trusted!

“We call him “Durai”. Its after his retirement we came to know his real name as “Dr.Krishnamurthy”. He is more than just a veterinarian. As mahouts we could visibly see an injured elephant getting rejuvenated the moment it sees him. More like treating humans, before getting in for any treatment, he would have an wordly conversation with elephants. One could understand their bond through their welcoming trumpet calls when they see him. Everyday of his posting at topslip, he would ignore his jeep and made it mandatory to walk from main area to the elephant camp. More than his job, he would also care for our personal lives. Every now and then he would ensure if our children are given proper education. He remained different from officers of his standards, never did he hesitated to sit on a gunny along with us to have tea” One of the mahout who worked with Dr.Krishnamurthy recalled his fond memories back then.

“Yaanai doctor” as rightly called, Dr.Krishnamurthy brought on a huge transformation in the lives of captive elephants. He worked as the chief veterinarian and looked upon the elephant camps of Topslip and Mudumalai. He was the sole reason behind the initiation of elephant rejuvenation camps (யானைகள் மறுவாழ்வு முகாம்) for temple elephants. From introducing safe tranquilizing techniques to standardizing postmortems, his contribution to the jumbos stands apart. Witnessing temple elephants making headlines with some worrying incidents day after day, his presence is deeply missed.

When Ian Douglas Hamilton (World renowned zoologist), attended a seminar with Dr.Krishnamurthy at the Mudumalai sanctuary and found the jumbos crowding around in response to his voice, he remarked, "I would love to exchange places with you”. Such is his legacy among these gentle giants (wiki reference).

When the Elephant enthusiasts around the world is celebrating him, our own country and state had missed to honor him with the respect he deserve. Today being his 22nd death anniversary, let us take a moment to respect all that he contributed to the animal world.

The Annual Dassera fest of Mysore where you can watch some of the finest elephants of Karnataka. This event is very similar to the Trissore Vadakkunathar temple Pooram festival where the best of Kerala elephants paraded. There cannot be a better sight watching the majestic tuskers parading. Unfortunately in TN there is no event like this

“Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws” - that is how one could describe the love and affection of a mother and this description is synonymous to the lovable elephant “Rathi” from Theppakkadu Elephant Camp. My father used to tell everyone that we humans have to learn many things from the elephants, especially what is love and affection is about.

‘Rathi’ Is a perfect example to describe and she possessed everything what is expected from a caring mother.

The sight of Rathi with her calf was a delight those days and visitors used to throng the Theppakkadu camp to see her with her kid. She had those beautiful eyes like ‘Rathi’ and that is how she was named after. To her credit she bore about 12 calves in her life time. She is also a pet of my beloved father

Rathi used to be a caring ‘step mother’ also and she voluntarily befriend with other calves in the elephant calf.

Rathi had acted in several films,
in tamil, Telugu, Hindi & Kannada languages.

She passed away during 2012 at Theppakkadu at the age of 70.

“indhar” the thorough gentleman elephant from Theppakkadu, is about 74 year old leading a retired life. Now he had lost his eyesight owing to age related issues. This animal was captured at Topslip during 1960 and was nurtured at the Theppakkadu elephant camp. A wonderful Kumki and was considered a VIP those days when people love sitting on top of this animal and go for joy ride inside the forest, as he used to take the visitors through the wild herd nonchalantly. He was my father’s pet and my dad used to describe him “Nadai azhagan” (நடை அழகன்) for his majestic walk. To his credit he had acted in more than 50-60 films in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada languages. Yet another jewel from Mudumalai Forests👌❤️💖

My beloved father along with Late Sri Ajay Desai & his wife are with Indhar

The elephant is not only impressive in size but also in behaviour. It is intelligent, sensitive, obedient and amazingly easy-to-handle if you understand the animal. It is a truly special animal for a vet.

A rare photograph to remember the Colour Collaring of Elephant herds in Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary way back during 1984-85 by the BNHS under the guidance of my beloved father, during his last years of service with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. A rare event conducted for the first time in our country. The eminent Elephant Veterinarians Dr Jacob Cheeran from Kerala, Dr Kadiri from Karnataka and the Curator of BNHS Sri JC Daniel were present on this occasion. The Kumki elephants summoned for this operation - Indhar, Mudumalai, Vijay & Sujay are seen in this photograph. They are leading happy life at Theppakkadu elephant camp even today. A memorable moment🤔

"There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society where none intrudes, By the deep Sea, and music in its roar: I love not Man the less, but Nature more"
There is nothing more than these lines that could describe Dr.K's love for nature.

As a part of Dr.K's birthday week, here we present one of his rarest interview by chatter box.

Chatterbox (CB) : Elephant vets aren’t common. How did you become one?

It was sheer accident. I was a regular cattle/ Goat vet, stationed near periyar tiger reserve. The sum total of my experience with elephants was doing postmortems on elephants killed for their ivory by poachers. Poaching was a serious problem then and I was the only vet within calling distance. I loved this area and was very upset when I was transferred. But soon after, I saw a circular asking for vets to volunteer for a job at Topslip wildlife sanctuary in the anaimalais. I was the only idiot to have opted for this way out posting. SO they grabbed me.

CB – So do you learned from experience the best teacher?

Yes, I also started learning about wild elephant behaviour by following herds. My children would come along too, because they were very fond of elephants. We would get to within 20 meters. If you follow few simple rules, the animals would get conditioned to your presence. If you remain calm, you can observe a herd for days without any fear and believe me, the scene is spectacular. Watching them in wild and learning their habits helped me become a better doctor to them in captivity. I got hooked on elephants and have been working with them for past forty five years.

CB - What has been your memorable experience with one of your patients?

The elephant is not only impressive in size but also in behaviour. It is intelligent, sensitive, obedient and amazingly easy to handle if you understand the animal. It is truly a special animal for a vet. One of my best patients was a famous tusker called inspector general, captured in 1934. He was enormous and when IG walked, the other elephants disappeared. But he was a gentle giant and even the mahouts five-year-old son could handle him. One day IG got into trouble with a wild tiger and was badly injured. He had twenty serious wound all over his body, including on the head and shoulders. He could not lie down. The only way I could reach him was by standing on his tusks. My medical attentions – cleaning, swabbing, applying medicines must have been extremely painfull but he realised the importance of keeping still and never flinched. For about twenty days he bore this discomfort and allowed me to treat him.

To be continued in forthcoming post...

We are extremely thankful for chatterbox team who recorded his interviews, where only very few of Dr.K's personal interviews are available.

It is quite some time that I have not posted any info on my beloved father Dr Krishnamurthy and today I have decided to share some interesting anecdotes.
My late father was the first Forest Vet who was instrumental in introducing morphometric studies on captive elephants. He used to record the height/weight and mass body index (MBI) of the departmental elephants in the camps of Theppakkadu(MTR) and Kozhikamuthi (ATR)
For recording the height measurement he had a scale which was gifted to him by an American scientist and for measuring body weight of an elephant he used to parade the wards to a nearby Waybridge in the vicinity. He was very meticulous recording these detail which was done periodically. If I am correct such periodical checkups started way back during 1980s itself. It was wonderful sight people used to throng the Weighbridge at Torapalli -MTRthat
