Chiku came to us with extreme reactivity issues. She was impossible to walk with and had severely harmed her handler many times. She is our alumni. Mowgli and Twixx (Cavapoo) are our current students in our puppy foundation program. Their handlers have worked on them to a level where they understand their canines enough to keep them safe. It is because of this understanding that sensitive dogs like Chiku can walk at close quarters with other dogs and the puppies understand that they needn't make friendship with everyone. Sara (5 years old) is one of those dogs who was impossible to walk (on leash) if there were other dogs present. She wouldn't back down. Mind you, she came to us after being trained. Yet, the handlers were not able to communicate with her in the presence of other dogs or distractions. This is Sara and her handler, Sucheta. Taking a walk in Versova beach. Offleash. Dogs are naturally predators. They come into our houses and try and decipher our lifestyle through the lens of an apex predator. Now, if you've ever visited a wildlife sanctuary, try to think of the number of predators you could spot easily. I am sure it will be very less, compared to prey animals. That's because predators like living a secluded life. They're mostly territorial and are quite used to the concept of personal space. But in our homes, we often ask and encourage our dogs to share their space with us. This is counter intuitive, but since dogs adapt to their surroundings, they develop a behaviour only to please their 'human'. Ironically, this new behaviour is not what the human wants and finds it difficult to control. Behaviour from resource guarding, space guarding to confusion and anxiety. Crate is one of the "tools" that we use to help communicate better with your pet. Once the communication is established, just like any other tools, you may or may not need it ever.
