Today’s session was a success despite it being the boys’ very first time around horses, both of them were extremely cooperative and enthusiastic and I had a wonderful time working with them. I look forward to seeing several improvements in their proprioceptors and vestibular system as well as a boost in their confidence and self esteem. Thank you to Commander Maini for providing the horse and the set up and Ms Anitha and Dr Priya for helping out with the session.

Today’s session could not have gone better, it was so heartwarming to see the child eager to be near Belize (the therapy horse) and continuously wanting to hug and lay his cheek on it. In next week’s session, we aim to make him sit on Belize and familiarize him with the motion of the horse.

After months of preparation, training and volunteering, I was able to do my first round of equine therapy today. Thank you to Dr. Priya and Ms. Anitha for supporting and guiding me through the process and to Commander Maini of FSS for lending Dashing Grey, who turned out to be the perfect therapy horse!

It was an amazing experience bonding with the child and seeing the excitement on his face, it made my day when I got a big hug from him at the end of the session:) I look forward to seeing several positive and lasting changes in him.

On Thursday I completed 1 month of volunteering at the Colorado Therapeutic Riding centre. I had a great time there, working with the sweetest people and getting more practical experience.

I recently read an article about how many females with autism are often misdiagnosed and struggle to get the necessary help. This is because the diagnosis and therapies performed, are based on observations done on males and therefore are not sensitive and specific to conditions in females. Social camouflaging, where female adolescents are generally more motivated by society to fit in and behave, resulting in the masking of their symptoms, is also an issue that contributes to the misdiagnosis.

Moreover, scientists fail to recognise the additional challenges a female would have to face, whether it be physical, social, or psychological (challenges that many females face in their teen years). This unfortunately results in high rates of depression, anxiety and anorexia.

This is an issue that needs to be more recognised and talked about.

Hi, my name is Anika Vijay D and I am currently studying at The International School Bangalore, I am an avid equestrian and I have been learning horse riding since the age of 11 and I can say with no doubt that the hours I have spent around horses have been a blessing and has really changed me as a person.

I believe that the wonderful opportunity I have to work with horses, should be shared with the children who can really benefit from it. That is why I thought it would be a good initiative to start doing equine therapy for children with Special Educational Needs in Whitefield.
In order to provide safe and enjoyable sessions I will be working with a psychiatrist.
