Shyami a six year female old Siberian cat was presented with a history of difficulty in parturition since two days, earlier attempts of inducing uterine contractions with medicines did not help to deliver the kittens.

On the day of presentation she was dehydrated showed generalized weakness due to no food intake since 2days . An immediate decision was made to perform a cesarean section and she was quickly prepared for the surgery. The hematobiochemical profile revealed severely elevated serum BUN and creatinine levels 148mg/dl and 10.9 mg/dl respectively. Surgery was performed under general anesthesia and careful monitoring of vital parameters. Four dead kitten were found in the uterus out of which two were already showing signs of decomposition. Surgery was uneventful and there was a smooth recovery from anesthesia, post operatively iv fluids administration helped to reduce the creatinine levels within 7days of therapy and Shyami recovered completely within two weeks of the surgery.
Routine blood test after eight months revealed all the parameters WNL.
NOTE:

Dystocia refers to abnormal or difficult birth. It can occur due to maternal factors (uterine inertia, inadequate size of birth canal) and/or fetal factors (oversized fetus, abnormal orientation as the fetus enters the birth canal) {-themsdvetmanual}

Surgical intervention becomes necessary when the mother cat is unable to expel the kitten even with medication and veterinary assistance.

In this case both the methods did not help in causing a normal delivery due to which surgery became necessary to save her life. The additional care provided by the pet parents at home and their routine follow ups post operatively helped us to save a very critical patient without the need of hospitalization, which is the most important aspect post surgery. It wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of Shyami's parents.

DAIZY a ten year old female GSD was presented to the clinic with the history of a large mammary tumor, inappetance and generalized weakness.
On examination a solid mammary gland tumor was noticed at the caudal abdominal mammry gland. Thoracic Radiography showed no evidence of metastasis, heamtological and biochemical parameters were within normal limits. Abdominal Ultrasonography revealed two nodular mass on the spleen.
As the tumor was progressively growing it was decided surgical remove the tumor and the spleen.
The surgery was performed under general anesthesia,
Daizy recovered from the surgery uneventfully within 10days
Histopathological examination revelead a Grade II Fibrosarcoma (Mammary), Hemangioma (Splenic)

Note: Mammary tumors are very common type of tumors in dogs especially intact (non neutered) females.
Surgical correction is recommended in rapidly growing tumors, ulcerated tumors, multiple tumors.
It is advisable to get your pet neutered as early as possible, before the first heat cycle or immediately after to reduce the chances of cancer.

A special thanks to Dr Noopur Desai, for the oncology consult.

Kittu a five month old rescued kitten was presented with a history of swelling on and around the left eye since over one and a half month. On examination there was considerable enlargement of the eyeball, painful swelling around the eye, ocular discharge. Corneal reflex, PLR was absent, loss of vision in the left eye. Medical management provided relief for a couple of weeks, but since the condition re-occured, a decision was taken to remove the affected eyeball (enucleation). Pre-operative evaluation of Hematological and biochemical parameters were within the normal limits.
The surgery was performed under general anesthesia and there was an uneventful recovery within 7days of the surgery

Note: Ocular emergencies are very common in both dogs and cats, the most common causes are traumatic injuries, automobiles accidents, cat and dog fights. Enucleation is performed when there is an irreversible damage to the eyeball and no possibility of regaining vision, or in very painful conditions.
In this case as the condition was reoccuring and causing distress to the animal a surgical correction was recommended.

A special thanks to the rescuer (Jaspreet Kaur) for the extra efforts and post operative care which helped Kittu to have a speedy and uneventful recovery.
