We would like to fact-check and put end to the misinformation & trolling circulating about the very unfortunate tragic demise of a pet called Joy. First and foremost as vets, the greatest reward we receive is when we treat pets and see them walk out healthy and happy. This has, is and always will be our sole unwavering pursuit and purpose.

Now regarding the case specifically:

Joy, a male golden retriever was brought to the hospital on 14th February 2023 with a severely bloated stomach. The stomach was extremely full of gas and was extending up to where the urinary bladder is. The intestines were also gas-filled and distended. The food pipe/esophagus was also severely dilated and gas-filled. As per the pet parent, the condition was recurrent in occurrence for a long time and was treated like a simple bloat at other clinical practices until then. On the 14th the bloating started at home early morning and did not respond to their regular intervention. Following which, Joy was presented at our hospital at 1.40 PM with severe bloat/breathing distress/pale mucous membrane and inability to walk.

After the physical examination and emergency xrays the pet was found to have severe gastric dilatation and megaesophagus. The decision to perform emergency gastric decompression and gastric lavage was made as there were no other available treatment options and the bloat would not have resolved with just i/v fluids and supportive injectables. The same was clearly intimated to the pet parents along with the risks/prognosis. Following which, the pet parent gave us consent to go ahead with the gastric decompression procedure. As per the norm prior to the procedure CBC blood test was conducted and Joy was found to have a severely low hemoglobin and platelet count which was intimated to the pet parent simultaneously.

While performing the gastric decompression the pet underwent a cardiac arrest, following which cardiopulmonary resuscitation was given and patient was shifted to a ventilator. During the period of resuscitation, the owners were called in person and explained the condition. Lastly in such cases, less than a 3rd of pets survive, if the intervention is not done in the first couple of hours. Enclosed are the results of the diagnostics.
