The bump in neck of a newly hatched chick is the Musculus complexus in layman term the “pipping” muscle.
The process of hatching is little understood, It has been accepted that the egg-tooth on the dorsal tip of the bill is a part of the apparatus that ruptures the shell. The tooth is pressed against the inner surface of the egg to form the first pip in the shell, but from where does the chick get the strong thrust to crack (pip) the shell?
Since the chick's head and neck are flexed inside the shell, it is logical to presume that extension of the head or any of the cervical vertebrae could force the tooth against the shell. Keibel (1912) believed that M. complex provided the upward thrust for egg tooth towards the egg shell and provides enough force for chick to pip and hatch.
Some believe that the inflammation of the “M. complexus is due to nonstop involuntary movement of the muscle during pipping.

So to sum it up - “M. complexus is a muscle extending from the vertebral column to the dorsal surface of the head. Its action is to raise the head and bill. The muscle is apparent at ? days of incubation, reaches its maximum size at 20 or 21 days of incubation, and then gradually disappears. This developmental history parallels that of the egg-tooth, which is thought to be effective in pipping the egg shell at the time of hatching. Histological study of the muscle and experimental procedures indicate that M. complexus is active at the time of hatching. It is believed that the muscle aids in forcing the egg-tooth against the shell.”

It is with great pride that I want to tell you the story of Panfila, an Amazon oratrix of only 6 months old who was presented for a very serious consultation, dehydrated, hypoglycemic and in a lot of pain due to an eye prolapse caused by a serious trauma.

In this particular and severe case, the only alternative was to resort to an enucleation 👁 since the entire eyeball was infected and pr*****ed, but my friends 😋 removing an eye from a bird is a very high-risk surgery 🤯 that to begin with 🥶

I'm going to write you excerpts from 2 books I have in my consul, which talk about enucleation in birds:

Enucleation in birds is indicated as a treatment for certain conditions that cannot be resolved by other surgical techniques.

Enucleation in birds is extremely challenging and carries many risks. The eyeball occupies a significant portion in volume and weight in proportion to the patient's head, adding that the eyes are very close to the walls of the orbits leaving little room for dissection.

Due to the size of the eye and the presence of a sclerotic ring (bone ring in the eyeball) the enucleation can alter the balance of the head due to weight loss.

They also have an interorbital septum that can be easily perforated during surgery, which can cause damage to the contralateral eye.

Birds have a very short optic nerve and excessive traction to the balloon can cause brain damage and blindness in the other eye.

It should be mentioned that we can also cause sudden death of the patient due to an oculocardiac reflex and significant bleeding in the optic nerve transection.

AFTER READING ALL THIS I OBVIOUSLY DIDN'T SLEEP 🤣

But surgery was necessary or we could lose the patient due to a severe infection, besides leaving him in pain was also not an option.

Thankfully everything went wonderfully well during the surgery and Pamfila was hospitalized for 2 more weeks.

Today Panfila finally went home with her beautiful family, with a new cage of baked paint and special croquettes for the parrot 🥰

A : Due to some bacterial infection in the breeding pair,
Issues with environment.
Lot of disturbance,
shaky perches or perches not of right size.
Malnutrition or undernourishment.
Immature or infertile male.
If not a single chick has hatched from the pair, Do a DNA again.

2- Why does a 100% breeding pair gives dead in egg shell?
A : Infection in eggs. May be passed on to egg from the parents.
Under nourished eggs
Disturbance
improper incubation

3- why does a breeding pair don't mate and plucked female feathers?

Is my Parrots Behavior Normal?

Common Parrot Behavior:
At times you may feel as if your parrot is acting weird or demonstrating odd behaviors but some of these actions are perfectly normal for your parrot. For example, you may notice your bird bobbing its head or grinding its beak. This is no cause for alarm. Your parrot is just acting the way it should. Below is a list of other behaviors that are common for parrots. Although some of these actions may be unwanted they still are common nevertheless.

Biting:
Biting may occur for several reasons. This first reason may surprise you. If you are in the presence of a stranger and he bites you, this is an instinctive flock behavior and it is meant to defend you. Next, biting may be a common behavior, although not desired, if your parrot is trying to control its environment. This is a way to challenge you and gain control of his surroundings. Finally, biting may occur if your parrot is simply exploring his surrounding or an object with his mouth.

Chewing and Gnawing:
All parrots will chew. In the wild, birds use their beak build nests or modify a hollow tree. Chewing and gnawing is the most common behavior. It is imperative to provide the proper toys and supplies to satisfy this impulse. If you do not supply your parrot with chew toys of other outlets you will find that he will meet these needs by gnawing on your furniture, plants or other household items, such as electrical cords. Chewing is a natural way for your parrot to keep his beak in top condition.

Standing and Sleeping on One Foot:
It is a normal behavior for your parrot to rest or sleep on one foot while the other foot is pulled up into the belly feathers. However, if you notice your bird always using both of his feet to sleep and perch, you need to make your veterinarian aware immediately as this may be an indication of a health issue.

Stretching:
Birds will go from a calm state to clasping his cage and stretching its wings and legs. They will appear to be mimicking an eagle lifting both wings at the same time. A little wing expanding is a normal behavior for all birds.

Beak Grinding:
Parrots often have a tendency to grind their beaks as they are falling asleep; this is a sign of a relaxed, happy and content feathered kid, which is a normal behavior as well.

Yawning:
Parrots will appear to be yawning from time to time by opening their mouths wide. This may be a way that your parrot is showing you it may need more oxygen in his environment and it is recommended that you air out the room or area that your companion is in. Or it may be that your bird is just stretching muscles. There is no reason for concern, unless accompanied by other signs of distress.

Seeking Attention with Noise:
Your parrot will let you know when some tender loving care is needed if you do not provide it with enough. You will hear and see behaviors such as screaming, sneezing, chatting, singing or shaking toys. This is a normal and effective way to get your attention.

Cleaning of the Beak:
It is not unusual for your parrot to wipe his beak on cage bars, perches, or you; this is a method the use for cleaning their beaks.

Bathing or Playing in the Water:
Birds love to play in the water and are great bathers. The water should be lukewarm before your bird gets in it and it is important to make sure he is completely dry before he goes to bed to prevent him from getting chilled. Bathing also provides great comfort for your bird. Whether you provide a light shower under the kitchen sink, a bowl of water to splash in or let your companion shower with you; you will realize rather quickly the excitement and joy your parrot experiences from bathing.

Charging:
Sometimes parrots will charge or lunge, if you will, at their human companions and strangers. Although this action is undesirable, it is often a common behavior of parrots. The best way to react to this is to not respond. By responding, your parrot thinks he can be threaten and control his human this way. Do not react and you will see the behavior fade over time.

Eye Pinning:
A parrot’s pupils will contract and expand when it sees something that excites or is of interest. This is called eye pinning. You can see this characteristic on some parrots better than others varying on the type of bird due to the color of their irises and how much they blend with the pupil in the eye. But this is a normal behavior never the less.

Screaming:
Parrots will vocalize, but birds who feel or are neglected tend to become screamers. Once a bird becomes a screamer, it can be a difficult habit to break. Birds may also scream if they become frightened, feel they need to protect their household and family members; some are even known to scream with they are tired. Nevertheless, at times your bird may want to reassure he is not alone and will scream. Just let your companion know you are there and comfort him. In most cases, the bird will be content with this and quiet down.

Fluffing:
This behavior relieves a bird’s tension or it is often the start of the preening process; but, if you bird fluffs up and stays that way, contact your veterinarian as it can be an display of sickness and needs to be addressed.

Hormonal Aggression:
Hormonal aggression is a common behavior in Amazons. This is a phase that begins to show between the ages of 5 to 11 years of age. This means that during this phase there will be a time span that last a little over a year where they are very aggressive. A bite from a hormonal parrot can be ferocious but do not be alarmed at this time; usually after your parrot passes this phase they show little or no aggression outside the breeding season, this is normal behavior.

Preening:
Your bird will spend most of his time preening his feathers. He will straighten and clean his feathers everyday to maintain his well- groomed appearance. He also lubricates his feathers with the oil he gets from the gland at the base of his tail. This is necessary for your bird to do to keep his skin from becoming dry. Do not be alarmed if you notice him picking or biting his tail. Birds will preen each other as well.

Regurgitation:
It is natural behavior for birds to regurgitate for their mates during mating season and while they raise their babies. It is a sign of affection and love. When your companion regurgitates you will notice pinning of the eyes, thrusting of the neck muscles and head bobbing right before he regurgitates the food.

Stressed Out:
To prevent your bird from becoming stressed it is important to keep a consistent routine with their routine and surrounding. Stress can do damage to your bird’s health. Parrots are habitual and do not adjust well to sudden changes. Stress has many symptoms that can include rapid breathing, loss of appetite, feather stress and picking, insomnia, squawking, diarrhea and fanning of the tails or wings. Again, try to maintain a steady schedule, plenty of attention and healthy diet to lessen the chance of stress in your bird.

Sleeping:
Birds require many hours of sleep a day. This amount of sleep may be perfectly normal for you to understand. However, there are some unusual behaviors that parrots have while sleeping that may be surprising to new bird owners. You may see your bird snuggling with or under something while sleeping or sleeping on their backs with their feet in the air. Although these behaviors may alarm you, your parrot is comfortable and relaxed and there is nothing to worry about. Provide your companion with something to cuddle so they will enjoy their sleep time. You may also see him standing on one leg with the other one tucked in his belly feathers and his head may be facing in the rear position. Again, this is perfectly normal and comfortable for your parrot.

WHY DO PARROTS SNEEZE?
There are many causes for sneezing in birds. Parrots do sneeze and it is normal. Most parrots come from tropical, humid climates and when kept indoors or places where humidity is very low. The nasal passages get dried, which, in most cases is the cause for sneezing.
A Parrot may sneeze for a number of reasons other than due to the environment being too dry. Vitamin-A deficiency or bacterial, fungal or viral infection can also cause sneezing and discharge from nares.
But frequent sneezing with a wet nasal discharge is an indication of illness. The nasal discharge causes the nares to get wet or blocked, which in turn causes irritation resulting in sneezing. It could be due to bacteria, fungi, and Chlamydia. Clinical tests are to be done to confirm the cause.
A more serious problem that could cause damage to the nasal or sinus passages could be the case if audible breathing sounds, tail-bobbing, weight loss, nasal or eye discharge or a change in vocalizations or eating habits accompany the sneezing.
At times it may not be due to sickness but due to wrong diet. . Correcting the diet will solve the problem. The most common cause is deficiency of Vitamin A in birds on a seed only diet. Low humidity and lack of proper ventilation is another cause.
Sneezing due to sickness may be due to a wide range of causes, The causes could range from Fungal or Bacterial infections Aspergillus or candida. It could also be due to Mycoplasma infections or Chlamydiosis (Psittacosis) Malnutrition, especially vitamin A deficiency. Cyst / Tumors inside the intranasal passage can block the Sinus passage causing irritation leading to sneezing. It can also be due to mucus or seed husk lodged in the intranasal passage, . Dusty seeds can also be a reason. Birds are allergic to Dust, Cigarette smokes, Sprays and Teflon fumes, and feather dust,
Birds with feather dust (Cockatoos) should never be housed with birds that have oil glands (Macaws). For example, Macaws are allergic to Cockatoo’s feather dust. Sneezing is an initial sign of an underlying sickness. So regular sneezing should not be taken lightly but should be attended to promptly.. All cases of regular sneezing in a bird must be attended to promptly.
Viral infections in birds rarely cause sneezing. Usually, viral infections in birds cause serious disorders like conjunctivitis which is accompanied by sneezing.
Depending on the findings the parrot should be treated accordingly. It could be as simple as increasing the humidity to bacterial or anti fungal treatment or both. But allergies are most common cause of sneezing. Making changes to the environment will solve the problem.

EGG SHELLS TELL THE STOTY.

In the FIRST image fresh blood veins are still there in the shell, which means the drawing of the egg yolk into the abdomen has not yet been completed. The chick has been assisted hatched in a hurry a little too early.

One way finding out if the egg yolk has been complete drawn in and process has as been completed is by placing a drop of warm water on the membrane covering the chick. Once moist the blood veins if any will be visible on the membrane. If visible then one has to wait till they no longer appear on application of drop of water.

The SECOND image is that of a perfectly hatched chick on time, As
the egg shell is neat and clean with no blood strains no droppings.

In the THIRD image the egg looks dirty with droppings in it. Which indicates that the chick was assist hatched after the due date. It indicates that the egg yolk had been completely drawn in and digested and droppings passed. Any more delay could have resulted in chick's death in the egg.

This are just my observations over a period of time. I have no source to support my views. I maybe wrong.

Broken or Cut blood feather. How to handle the situation.
Hobbyist should be prepared to face situation like broken blood shaft / cut blood shaft / feather. Any feathers anywhere on the body will have a blood supply inside the shaft. The blood nourishes the feather while they grow; as the feathers mature the blood dries out. So it is very important that a hobbyist knows how to handle the situation. In case such a situation arises.
The new feathers that have blood in the shaft are called Pin feathers. This Pin feathers need lot of blood supply to to grow. Once they are fully grown the blood supply dies out. If during this period the feather is broken or cut the bird will bleed profusely and may even bleed to death if the bleeding is not stopped.
Feathers grow from the follicle in the skin of the bird. The feather is nourished by an artery and vein that extend up into it from the follicle. The newly growing pin feather can be identified the the color it will look dark in color as it is filled with blood, whereas the shaft of an older feather will be white.
The old feathers are continues replaced and heavily replaced during the molting period. Blood feathers appear during this period, They can be damaged during this period due to various reasons.
A hemostat and cotton are an essential part of the first aid kit. If you trim your bird's wings, examine each feather closely before cutting, so as to avoid cutting blood feather accidentally.
Sometimes a blood feather may break due to an accident or be accidentally cut causing it to bleed. A broken or accidentally cut blood feather is not life threatening, if promptly attended too and appropriate steps are taken.
It is always advisable to remove the damaged feather, as it is bound to bleed again and again due to recurring injury.
Once the damaged feather is removed the bleeding will stop and a new feather will grow, sometimes the bird maybe suffering from a disease which could affect its clotting for example a liver disease. This could lead to huge blood loss and death.
This is what you have to do in case you face with such a situation.
1. Catch the bird, in such a way that it is comfortable in your grip.
2. Use Flour, Corn starch or Hemostat powder over the broken feather and apply pressure. This will help the blood to clot.
3. If the attempt to stop bleeding fails. The feather has to be removed. It is best done by a Veterinarian. If there is no Veterinarian around get in touch with an experienced hobbyist in your area. Who might be able to help you.
4. Two persons are required to go this procedure, one to hold the bird and another to pull the feather.
5. The damaged feather should be gripped firmly close to the root and pulled out with a single firm jerk. Hold the bird firmly during this procedure.
6. Bleeding will stop after completing this procedure successfully. In case there is bleeding from the follicle due to follicle damage after the feather has been removed, Pressure should be applied till the bleeding stops.
7. In case of something going wrong during the procedure or the bird looks very weak due to blood loss the bird should be taken to a veterinarian immediately.

BIRD REPRODUCTIVE ANATOMY

Bird reproduction begins, as in mammals, when an o**m in the oviduct of the female is fertilized by the s***m from the male The fertilized o**m is the nucleus of the egg and is equipped with yolk which is the food source for the growing embryo with a protective shell forming around it before laying.
A healthy mature female in breeding condition will lay eggs without mating with a male.. Hence the egg laid would be infertile

MALE Reproductive organ
As birds fly their reproductive organs modified. To keep their body weight low. The male te**es enlarge only during the breeding season or when the male is in breeding condition. They enlarge several hundred times the normal size. S***m passes to the cloaca in a coiled tube, where it is temporarily stored. Male develops a bulge in the cloaca area when in breeding condition.

FEMALE Reproductive organ
The female has two ovaries which are shrunk when not in breeding condition, though they have two ovaries only one is active and it is the left o***y that develops,
S***m is passed on to the female during copulation by direct contact of the two cloacas. The male briefly mounts on the back of the female and the cloacas are pressed together in what is called "cloacal kiss".
It is interesting to note that both male and female have a cloaca, which acts as e single entry and exit point like pe*******on / entry of s***ms, layering / passing out of egg and f***s / droppings

PAPAYA is a tropical fruit, It is known for its powerful digestive enzyme. – Papain. It has high on beta carotene content which is readily converted to vitamin A by the body. Papaya should be considered as a basic part of any parrot diet. Proper digestion is very important for the well being of the bird. Improper digestion or digestive problems can be one of the major reasons for the disease to affect the parrot. If the parrot has digestive issues it means that that the bird is not able to absorb the required nutrients from the food.
Papaya is a fruit that is rich in enzyme and any enzyme rich food should be offered to parrots on daily basis. Enzymes help in assimilation of the nutrients from their diet. Normally the seeds of the papaya are discarded by most of people and are not feed to parrots. But it has been found that the parrots love the seeds especially the Eclectus parrot. The papaya seeds are natural anti-parasitic agent, I been feeding Papaya to all the birds on daily basis for many years without any ill effect.
Papaya pulp made from Papaya fruit and Papaya seeds are a very good remedy for slow crop and digestive issues in parrot chicks. This was recommended by Tony Silva. Which I implemented in feeding of our hand raised chicks by mixing papaya pulp only in the daily regular hand feeding mixture. Since then I have had no slow crop problem.

FEATHER DUST

Though feather dust is common in parrots,It is very prominent in few species of parrots. Like Cockatoos African Grey and Amazons. Parrots that are native to dry and hot climate Like Africa and Australia have powdery downs. Most of the South American birds have Uropygial gland also known as oil gland. All down feathers do not produce dust/powder. Amazon parrots and Hyacinth macaws from South American region do not have Uropygial gland. Powder comes from down feathers that continue to grow for an extended period. The fine hair-like extensions continuously break off and coat the skin and feathers. The powder has water repellent property and sticks to everything, including dirt. As the bird preens the excess powder falls off along with the dirt, keeping the bird clean. The more the amount of feather dust the healthier the bird is. The feather dust helps in water proofing the feathers. It is advised that the two species should not be housed together, Specially the Macaws with Cockatoos or any bird that produces feather dust. As Macaws are allergic to the dust and cause respiratory problems.
One you to check for a healthy Cockatoo is to have a look at its beak. It should be covered with the powder / dust. Run your finger over the cockatoo underbody and under the wings, if there is powder in your hand it is an indication that the bird is healthy. If not it could be due some underlying issue,One of the sign of PBFD is lack of feather dust.

05/07/2023

Fiji banded iguanas are bright green lizards with crested spines and long tails, which help them balance while climbing trees. Males have wide blue or light green stripes along their body. Females, on the other hand, are generally solid green but may have a few white or pale blue spots. These lizards have reddish-orange eyes and yellow nostrils.

These iguanas usually reach a length of about 7.5 inches (19 centimeters).
Fiji banded iguanas are only found on the Fijian islands. They are most prevalent on the wet central islands, generally between 656 and 1,640 feet (200 and 500 meters) above sea level. They live in the mesic to moist forests of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Ovalau, Viwa, Kadavu and their associated islands.

These lizards tend to prefer the plants found in wet forests. They are arboreal, spending most of their time in trees. Therefore, they are found in areas with high vegetation and trees at least 20 feet (6 meters) tall. Like other iguanas, they are also strong swimmers.
These lizards are primarily herbivorous and forage for leaves, flowers and fruit. On a rare occasion, they may also eat insects.
Reproduction and Development
Fiji banded iguanas reach reproductive maturity at 3 to 4 years old. Males court females by bobbing their heads and flicking their tongues. After copulation, females dig burrows in nesting sites to lay their eggs. They generally lay a clutch of about five eggs, which incubate for seven to nine months.
Fiji iguanas raised in Zoos have lived to be 25 years old. In the wild, their lifespan is estimated to be closed to 10 to 15 years.
