Made the most of yesterday's sunny and dry day to overhaul and clear the overgrown plants in my garden, it had become such a jungle, now I'm thinking I should have clicked a before and after🙈

I also fed them some fresh kitchen compost and then neatly covered them with mulch.

Using these coir mulch mats by as they make for an excellent option to mulch my plan pots, especially in this monsoon season when other sources of mulching like dry leaves, wood chips, etc. are difficult to source. You can use stones and pebbles to mulch as well, but then that makes the pots too heavy.

What's the purpose of mulching:
- keeps the soil covered and therefore protects all the microorganisms in the soil from being exposed to harsh environments (strong winds, heavy rain, extreme sunlight, etc) from the outside.

- helps reduces soil erosion

- absorbs and stores excess water and then releases it slowly into the soil so as to reduce any overwatering done.

Especially great for plants that hate overwatering - like this lemon plant.

I got this excellent pineapple specimen with baby pineapples attached! This is from Shishir at the .co.in in Bandra this Sunday. If you haven't visited the market, you must go check it out, for all their yummy, seasonal goodies! Shishir is such a wealth of knowledge, you must go meet him and exchange notes if like me, you are a plant nerd🤓

Have you seen pineapples growing at a farm? Here's a little bit about how they grow and the slips and suckers and the tops. This particular variety is called a Queen pineapple - identified by its very spiky leaves but it is extremely sweet to taste!🤤

I've grown them mainly from tops and they take much much longer to grow. So I'm excited to get my hands on a few slips to grow them quicker :) Have you grown pineapples at home in containers? Or at your farm?

I've been so worried about the lemon blossoms in the garden this season, the last few days rains and crazy winds being so brutal on my green babies!

But looks like they are strong and enjoying the season's adventures! Silly me, worried about nothing 😅

How are your plants doing in this crazy Mumbai weather lately? Tell me if you need any help/ suggestions. I'm here :)

Hello Hello!
I feel today is a good day to introduce myself to all the lovely new gardening folks here. My name is Diipti Jhangiani, a journalist turned Permaculture farmer, growing this company called Edible Gardens for a little over 4 years now :)

The first thing I do in the morning is to go and say hello to my plant babies followed by my fur babies. And while I'd love to be living on a farm, for now, I am based in Bombay and grow edible plants in my balcony and box grill.

I used to grow a lot more in the compound of our society building until just a few months ago, but I've had to downsize that for the time being and stick to the little I can do in my personal spaces.

I am very very passionate about community gardens, I've helped setup and volunteer at more than 10 such community gardens over the years and still volunteer at a lovely little community garden in Bombay in Bandra called Dream Grove.

I've had the pleasure of teaching very many folks the joy of kitchen composting and growing your own food in small spaces, in your homes and school and office gardens.

I do get annoyed with people sometimes, people who impulsively get into gardening but cannot commit time or energy to care for them. It hurts me also when people expect to see plants grow lush and green overnight. But I guess one can't blame them as they are used to plastic plants all around their environment and a lot of that horrible turf grass all around...

But thats just 1% really. The majority of magical garden humans I've met along the way are simply amazing! They give me a lot of hope to continue doing what I do. I also strongly believe that no one, absolutely no one is an expert when it comes to Nature. Even after studying, working and experimenting in this space for over 12 years, I have still barely scratched the surface of the wonders of plants and green ecosystems!

I hope to continue meeting a lot of lovely people here and through my work at Edible Gardens, continue diving deeper into this world of greens and setup many many many more edible gardens in the near future for you!

Update on the peanuts sown last month: these babies are ready to be transplanted to bigger containers today! Look how beautifully they've grown, still at the stage at which you can see them sprouting from the shell but big enough to now be moved to bigger pots to increase their yield.

If you are looking for something easy to grow in your container garden this monsoon season, let it be peanuts! Just soak some store-bought peanuts (not roasted, they must be raw but don't have to be in their shell) Just 45 days is their life cycle from seed to harvest. So for me, it's time to rush them to a bigger container so that three weeks from now, I get a fabulous harvest of peanuts!

I'll show you how to grow these and many many more edibles at the upcoming workshop (16th July, Saturday from 11-12.30pm) do sign up if you haven't already, and see you soon!

I was so touched by .diwekar recent post about local, seasonal foods and how they have lost their footing in the wide array of American corn, yellow banana and so many more. Did you see it? You must if you missed it. I know how much I miss the white makka.. it is so hard to find.

But that's why, what she is doing is what we need. More and more influencers speaking about the significance of local and seasonal produce over fad foods and diets.

The importance of eating and growing local and seasonal indigenous produce, of enjoying the sheer variety of foods we used to have..has lost its significance in the rush towards western sources of nutrition like the fancy avocados and kiwis and blue berries and what not.

Yet, I feel this simple act of growing desi green bananas in a container in our building compound is an act of defiance against this change that everyone is hurtling towards. I'm just thankful to have the knowledge, the space, the permission and the ability to.

I do with more of us considered all the empty space we have around our homes, our societies, our neighborhood and transform those grey spaces into lush food forests where we can all partake of the seasonal veggies and fruits that Nature happily showers upon us, should we put in that little effort to just set things up.

Just image how different our urban spaces could be, if we each took on the task of building food forests around is, greening our cities, one square foot at a time..

A single seed, sown in the right season, with the right kinda soil, nurtured for the right amount of time, will fruit. That's the only certainly I've ever had. The faith, the security that a single, open pollinated, chemical-free seed gives is simply unparalleled!

In the hyper uncertainty of the world we live in today, this security - food security that a single seed can give, is the need of the hour more than ever before. And it is you and I, the humble urban farmer who can help protect and safeguard this security for not just our future generations, but for our present.

In this collage, you see two different varieties of cucumber growing in my building compound garden, both from very different geographic backgrounds - one from the hills of the north and the other from the plains of the south.

Yet, you see how they are flourishing in my home near the sea. You see how the seed adapts? You see how, no matter how the change in conditions, it has adapted and thrived?

That's the kind of resilience we need to imbibe! So many life lessons in a single frame...

Hey guys! Wishing you all a happy July! Hope this month brings you the same joy I feel when I see baby cucumbers and even more so when I see fertilised baby cucumbers!

Patience really is the name of this game. Be it container gardening, urban farming or agriculture in a full fledged farm, you just have to follow the right steps, give them their time and then wait. Rushing into buying a blooming sapling will only give you a shortlived plant. Over feeding or over watering will only stress it away from it's goals. When it comes to farming, you just cannot wing it.

That there is the core of all farming activities. TIME. There is no cheating time. There is no convenience of stretching or shortening the work that goes into indigenous farming. If you harvest a veggie early, you wont experience it's true potential. If you forget to harvest on time, it becomes fibrous and transitions into it's seeding phase.

Isn't this an excellent lesson in time management?

Announcement: The next Nature Inspired session is coming up this Friday from 4-5pm!

I'll be in conversation with the lovely Deval Shah, founder of The Golden Leaf Farms and a dear friend I've had the pleasure of meeting right here on instagram!

From pursuing a post-grad degree in medical biotechnology to growing her own food and helping many others too, Deval has had a fabulous journey and I want all of you to know about it.

We'll be chatting about how it is to grow food using native seeds, how does she pursue a dual career and so much more!

This is going to be such a fun one, I'm afraid 60mins will be too little for the amount that both of us will be chatting away about farming😄

So do block your Friday 4-5pm for this insta live, right here on the .in Insta handle!

See you soon!

It's not the season for dry leaves. So here's an example of how I'm improvising.

I have requested the neighborhood coconut-wala who graciously brings us tender coconuts each morning to drop off this essential, fibre-rich ingredient to me a couple of times a week. What is it you may wonder? You know the top of the coconut that he slices off to break open the delicious water and malai within? This is that!

As you can see, it has dried out nicely in the last few days and is now ready to be a lovely mulch layer for the garden plants. It's a great alternative to leaves in the scenario that dry leaves are out of season. Also, these are super rich in fibre and carbon to help balance the hyper active wild greens (read excess nitrogen in soil) sprouting allll over!

I am always amazed by how nature provides us with exactly what we need. And there is always a natural alternative around, all you have to do is seek and improvise 😀

On that note, I'd love to share with you that we'll be having the next Nature Inspired session with a fabulous Nature Entrepreneur this Friday at 4.30pm. All details shall be revealed in a post tomorrow but please please keep your Friday 4.30-5.30 booked for EG!

Lots of Love and much mulch!

Hey everyone! Hope you are having a lovely monsoon season? I am simply enjoying all the wonders blooming in my little garden this season :)

And I just had to share this one with you! These gorgeous white blossoms belong to the garlic family, growing in just about 6 inches of soil. It's it simply beautiful? I tried to capture its beauty using a macro clip-on lens on my phone.

This really is my most favourite season for garden photography! And trying to get the details of a flower in a picture or the eye of a bee or butterfly sleeping in a flower or the perfect bees of water on a colocasia leaf.. garden photography is such a simple yet wonderful way to spend time in our urban outdoors.

Would you like to share some of your garden photographs of the season? So tag me in your pictures and I can share it in the stories. This will be such a fun thing to do this season!

On and I have something lovely coming up this week, I'll tell you more about it tomorrow. Lots of fun activities planned ahead for this season!

Opened my windows this rainy morning to this gorgeous one in bloom!
Ananta or Gardenia is what these are commonly known as, the fragrance of just one flower can fill up an entire room. Do you know any other names for it? I'm sure it has many more names in all the different languages we speak in India. It's not edible per say but a fabulous natural source of divine fragrance to bring into our home this morning!

Are you growing this beauty at home? It should be blossoming in this season for you as well. If not then just tell me what's happening and I'll try to help you fix it. Maybe the blossoms are falling before opening, maybe the leaves are turning a different colour.. just ping me with the issue and we'll try getting it to a healthy blossoming space again.

Hope you guys are enjoying this fabulous weather? It's one of my most favourite! After all the hard work done in summer, it's now time to sit back and enjoy :)

Butter Bananas all ready for harvesting today, and in perfect time to share with a lot of the neighborhood, friends and friends!

It can be confusing about the right time to harvest bananas. I usually wait for a couple to start turning from that raw green to a slightly riper pale yellow, like you can see in the second picture.

And tomorrow we'll harvest the trunk of this beautiful banana tree for its core and make some yum sabzi out of that!

Can't wait!

This is urban farming at its best. With no access to ground, I've grown bananas in containers. The sheer pleasure of seeing them grow, harvesting and sharing with everyone from my autowala to neighbours to friends and family.. it's really something else!

Happy Happy 😁

If 15 year old me were told that 36year old me absolutely loved these rolls made out of leaves and chickpea, I'd make a horribly disgusted face! Back then I couldn't have imagined why anyone would roll up a leaf and eat it😄

I'm glad 15 year old me had no idea she'd become a crazy old plant lady😎

Here's a plateful of freshly made Alu Vadi to brighten up your FriYay! Alu prep was done yesterday after harvesting some leaves in the morning, so the alu vadi was a quick and ready to serve Farm to Plate breakfast today!

Today, after a horribly failed attempt at a run in the heat (they say that 9-11am is a good time to soak up some Vit D), I decided to let it go and take some solace in our compound garden. So I crawled under and cooled down under our little trellised tent loaded with yard beans! Coolest part of the compound it is in this crazy humidity, made me so happy🤩

Every thing we do sums up to this moment, this act, this dream of bringing back our lost biodiversity.
🐝
Today is being celebrated as the International Day for Biological Diversity. What does that even mean?
🌺
It's simply ethnic, economical, racial, culinary, natural, cultural, biological diversity at its most kindest and simplest.
🌱
It's moving away from ownership and understanding the values of guardianship. That we don't own the earth or pieces of it. That we are just guardians of it for the next generation. And not just the next generation of humans but the next gen of Mother Nature and all her sentient beings.
🌿
By just being cognisant of this, we are celebrating this day. By composting the waste we generate, we are celebrating this day. By growing our own food, no matter how little or more, we are celebrating this day. By building sanctuaries for trees, bees and so many fellow beings, we are celebrating this day. By helping keeping our oceans clear of plastics, we are celebrating this day. By reducing our carbon footprint and bringing down the sea surface temperature, we are celebrating this day.
🏆
Every waking hour of our lives, by being cognisant that we are a part of Nature, we are celebrating this day.
🐠
My humble prayer on this day is that each one of us try to bring in atomic changes to our day to day lives and help celebrate our biodiversity everyday of our lives🤞🏼🙏🏼

Now that the fallen trees have been chopped and cleared, there is a renewed hope all round, with new plans for plantation drives a d planting more indigenous species around the city.
Do make sure you are part of these drives in whatever way you can. I sure will.
It makes me sad that so many of the city's edibles neem, mango, jamun, love apple, banana and so on that were in full bloom fell due to the storm. I can only hope that people did justice to their fruit and did not just throw them all in the junk yard..

But thankfully, trees in our compound did not fall, some got withered like the banana and papaya but I've given them a nice haircut yesterday, so they will all grow their leaves back happily.

Here I've made a chilla using leaves from our Moringa tree that did not break (thanks to our good old Wild Fig tree that you can see has given it support in its arms🥰)

This Greens and Mushroom chilla I thought is a nice way to honour the leaves that were drooping and I know couldn't make it.
Here's the recipe:
- A handful of Moringa leaves. No need to chop them as they are so small and tender
- A handful of sliced mushrooms
- Fermented rice and urad dal batter (I soak both in a 2:1 ratio and blend the next day)
- 1 cup of sooji
- 500ml of water
- salt and khandsari sugar to taste
- 1 spoon of thecha (garlic and chilli paste)
Simply mix it all together, spread out a couple of spoons on the pan, cover with a lid for the steam to cook it nicely, flip and serve hot.

Now that the skies are clear again and there is some sign of normalcy, we'll get back to our regular programming here :)

I'll be harvesting compost from my compost bin this evening, hopefully I'll do a live session on that as well.

Lots of love and green to you all!

17/05/2021

Hi everyone, I hope you are staying indoors and safe as the cyclone approaches us here in Mumbai and for everyone in the affected zones.

🌧️

I thought of sharing some things I do as part of my self love regime. You can also take this opportunity to brew some self care recipies for your skin and hair. Here's a plateful of sleeping hibiscus flowers and leaves I've harvested from the garden just now to make a DIY hair pack.

🌿

Just make a paste using a handful of hibiscus flowers and leaves and apply it on your scalp and roots for 10-12 mins and wash off. No need to shampoo after.

🌺

It's a great hair tonic for my hair that tends to get dry very easily. Hibiscus Flowers and leaves both have a lot of health benefits. But please have these only after consulting your physician as some benefits for some can mean contraindications for others. For example, people who tend to have a lot of heat in the body are recommended to have hibiscus tea as it is cooling. But for people who need to generate heat in the body, it should be avoided. So study and use your edible plants accordingly.

Also, here are some tips to get your garden ready for the monsoons:
- mulch around your bigger plants well so as to reduce soil erosion
- definitely don't water your plants as they are already recieving enough from the rains
- keep your delicate plants indoors, ideally on a window sill so it doesn't have to fight the breeze and yet can get ambient light.
- bring potted plants like rose, mint, basil, lemongrass indoors as they don't like to sit in soggy soil that has excess water.
- Fortify your taller plants with a bamboo stick or some kind of stake so that they don't injure their main stems whilst trying to withstand the force of the wind.
- Don't forget to harvest your herbs and make a hot toddy with them to help build your immunity during this weather change.

🍃

Okay, that's it from me for today, I'm planning another insta live session soon to help you tide over the upcoming monsoon season. Please tell me anything you'd like to learn and I'll add that in my session.

We dare to hope! We dare to inspire, the times we live in, it helps to aspire, for a world full of wonder awaits, the soul that seeks refuge in Nature. No wonder, we are Nature Inspired!

🌱
I got to know about Rohhaan's work while I was on a quest to find mushrooms sold sans any plastic packaging. And I was so happy when I inquired about this and he expressed how his venture sends mushrooms packed in reusable paper bags! Such a relief that was for me, a very important part of my veggie protein source and that too now without any plastic packaging! It was such a win-win for me.
🌿
I've learnt so much from Rohhaan, each time I come across a new mushroom specimen, I promptly send it to him and he will help identify it!
🍃
So I'm very excited to bring out conversations to you in an Insta Live Session tomorrow on the Edible Gardens page at 4-5pm.

Guys, please help me amplify this insta live session that's super close to my heart - in conversation with NATUREPRENEURS and my epic love for mushrooms come together tomorrow in a session with Rohhaan Gawde on our .in insta handle!

Nature Inspired is a series of Insta Live sessions with Nature Entrepreneurs I admire and want to share with you! This has been a passion project in the making for a while for me and I'm so happy to begin it this week with one of my most favourite subjects in the garden - Mushrooms!

Professional who have been working in the nature space - I like to call them NATUREPRENEURS are a new breed, a new species of earth warriors; our love for the planet makes us realise that we are not separate from Nature. And if we are to earn a livelihood, why not do it by preserving and caring for nature and it's lovely biodiversity?

So once a month, I bring you, someone who has proven this philosophy of working and caring for nature beautifully and this week we have founder of Rohhaan Gawde joining us and telling us all about mushrooms!

How he started off his journey with a business in Mushrooms, how you can grow them, identify edible mushrooms growing in the wild and more! Join us for this super conversation as we navigate through the mysterious world of Mushrooms.

Do join us for this session tomorrow, May 14th Friday from 4-5pm right here on the Edible Gardens insta page! Come and get Nature Inspired!

Loopers are one of the many herbivore insects that thoroughly enjoys munching on the leaves of edible plants. They have a great way to camouflage as they look just like a twig when they are still.

So be a little vigilant around your garden, avoid crowding too many plants together and when you spot them, pluck out the eaten leaves and the looper and carry it away from your garden.

Please remember that even though they may be pests for us, they are sentient living beings and need to eat, just like is. They are also a vital part of the food chain. So please don't kill them, just gently send them someplace else. I just remove them from my potted plants and go kept them in the compound garden below. Simple.
🌱

11/05/2021

Just a morning walk around the garden can shower so many blessings. Almost don't miss being on a farm, what with so many veggies and fruits and edible flowers growing all around us.
🌱
Have you tried growing edible plants around your home, your building/ society compound? I can't begin to tell you the joy of harvesting a few stems of curry leaves, some karelas, beans and more from our little edible garden around our compound.
🍃
If you have the bandwidth to take on this project, to take charge of composting veggie waste and then growing food around your home, all you have to do is ping me and I'll show you how.
🌿
The benefits of growing your own food, of being in touch with soil, of processing wet waste and converting it into rich compost instead of it going waste in landfills - all of it is such an important part of our life as humans.
🥗
Yes it is a fun pass time, yes it is a great hobby to have but I feel more and more that growing your own food is a vital skill that atleast one person in the family or friend circle must have.
🌱
Don't you agree?
