Convivenza maschio e femmina: conviene davvero?

Let's talk about AFT's gender 👇🏼

🇬🇧 Distinguishing the gender of an AFT may not be easy, especially for a beginner. So is my gecko male or female?
You need to look under the tail, near the cloaca area, where we find the greatest gender dimorphism.

(Page 2) ♂️ Males have a strong and obvious line of femoral pores, which are mainly responsible for the release of pheromones, just under the cloacal opening. Just above we can find two bulbs, each of which contains a hemip3n1s (yes, they have two). The two bulbs are separated by a clear dividing line.
Generally, in adult age, males are larger than females, with rounder heads and more massive bodies, although this depends a lot on the singular specimen.

(Page 3)♀️Females have pores too, of course, but soooo much tiny and underdeveloped. They don't have bulbs or diving line, cloaca area look completely smooth.

⏳Typically, specimens begin to show the first signs of s3xual dimorphism around 2-3 months of age or around 10 grams in weight.
🇮🇹 Distinguere il genere di un AFT può non essere semplice, specialmente per un principiante. Quindi il mio geco è maschio o femmina?
Devi guardare sotto la coda, nell'area cloacale, dove troviamo il dimorfismo di genere più evidente.

Generalmente in età adulta i maschi sono anche più grandi delle femmine, con una testa più rotonda e una massa corporea maggiore, anche se questo dipende molto dal singolo esemplare, esistono tante eccezioni a riguardo.

⏳ Solitamente gli esemplari iniziano a mostrare i primi segni di dimorfismo di genere attorno ai 2-3 mesi o attorno ai 10 grammi di peso.

Let's talk about AFT's eyes 👇🏼

🇬🇧 The eyes of these geckos are mostly completely black or dark brown, very rich in capillary veins and protruding from the body. Some have lots of gray and white streaks, while others have colored pigment, which varies from red to orange.

The vertical pupil, characteristic of nocturnal reptiles, effectively controls the light for night vision but also reduces daylight during sun exposure.
The eyes must be clear, bright, lively and open. They must not have any fluid leaks, shed residue, encrustations, cuts or tears.

It's important that the gecko keeps them wide open during moments of activity: constantly closed eyes can indicate a state of illness.

🇮🇹 Gli occhi di questi gechi sono nella maggior parte completamente neri o marrone scuro, molto ricchi di capillari venosi e sporgenti rispetto al corpo. Alcuni hanno molte screziature bianche, altri invece hanno anche pigmenti colorati che vanno dal rosso all'arancione

La pupilla verticale, caratteristica dei rettili notturni, controlla molto bene la luce in entrata durante la notte sia quella diurna durante le esposizioni al sole.
Gli occhi devono essere lucidi, brillanti, vispi e aperti. Non devono avere spurghi di liquidi, residui di muta, incrostazioni o lacerazioni.

È importante che il geco li tenga ben aperti durante i momenti di attività: occhi costantemente chiusi possono indicare uno stato di malessere.

Let's talk about the AFT's claws!

🇬🇧👉🏼 The claws of AFTs are short and strong, because they need to dig their burrows in the hard African soil composed mostly of clay which makes it really resistant. Furthermore, they are used to digging into termite nests, another resistant material, in which they then live and lay their eggs, having heat, humidity and food available to them without ever having to move.

🍂 They are rarely used for personal defense from predators or conspecifics, for that they use their mouth and teeth.
Compared to these, leopard geckos have longer and thinner claws, better suited to climbing rocks.

💅🏻 Your AFT's claws should always be clean, free of shedding residue, have a pearly appearance and color, and should not flake when touched.
🇮🇹👉🏼 Gli artigli degli AFT sono corti e robusti, perché hanno bisogno di scavare le loro tane nel duro terreno africano composto per lo più da argilla che lo rende davvero resistente. Inoltre sono abituati a scavare nelle tane di termiti, altro materiale resistente, in cui poi vivono e depongono le uova, avendo a disposizione calore, umidità e cibo senza mai doversi muovere.
