**EDIT: ADOPTED!!** (near) SCRANTON, PA: 9 year old Duke is having a rough go at life right now. This old man spends his long days in the shelter and it's starting to show physically; his legs are deteriorating despite volunteers trying their best and taking him out as much as they can. Duke has also bounced between different shelters and foster homes and has had zero security in his life. Some may say he is "broken," but no, Duke is not broken. But rather, he is in a broken system and humans have failed him over the years. Duke needs a whole lotta love. And he is waiting for someone to have compassion and empathy towards his circumstance and do everything in their power to change his life. PLEASE SHARE!
A volunteer wrote, "Duke was found tied to a pole, emaciated and scared, after apparently running away from his owners who adopted him as a puppy. He has had a tumultuous life, bounced from one shelter to another, one adopter to another, and all just a matter of circumstance.
Along with Duke's senior status comes all the good things: he's calm, enjoys short walks, is housetrained, prefers a good nap to just about anything else (except maybe treats), loves soft toys, doesn't need a lot of exercise, loves to cuddle, and to give/get kisses. Volunteers all say the best part of their day is taking Duke out for a short walk and then simply hanging out getting some fresh air, some sun, and some Duke-cuddles!
Duke guards his things as sadly he's never had anything for very long. Not even consistent love. Although he ignores other dogs on his walks, he prefers to be the solo pet in his home. He can be a little choosy with some men, but when he likes a guy, he LOVES them! Due to potential guarding it's best that he go to a home with no young children.
Duke does have some arthritis in his back legs. We are dismayed to see how badly his legs have deteriorated making it difficult and uncomfortable to walk. The brutal cold doesn't help, of course. The shelter has made an appointment for the end of this month for an orthopedic consult to see if there is anything that can be done to make him more comfortable.
The shelter doesn't normally transport but for special situations like Duke we would absolutely extend our services to include transport. His adoption fee is covered."
To adopt Duke, please email [email protected] with questions or assistance!
