Amstaffs – Pet, Working, Showing – One Dog, One Breed Standard
Let’s start with the key fact of there is NO Show Standard or XL size in Amstaffs, this is an excuse used to justify breeding dogs for personal preference and disregarding the history and the purpose of the breed.
There is one and only one breed standard for all Amstaffs whether they are pets, show dogs, working dogs or breeding dogs.
Consider the Breed Standard a blue print for how a dog breed should look, behave and for what purpose it was created. It is what every respectable breeder will aim to achieve when producing puppies. The Amstaff breed standard was written in 1936 and has not changed.
The American Staffordshire Terrier is a blending of bull and terrier; there are three basic types you may see. All three types should still compare to the breed standard.
* A Bully Amstaff should not be taller nor shorter than 17 to 19”, it should not have loose skin or be exaggerated in features, it can still fit in the heights and weights as described in the standard. It is still agile and graceful.
* A Terrier Amstaff should not be taller nor shorter than 17 to 19”, it should not be racy in outline, it may be leggier than a Moderate or Bully Amstaff but still fit within the height and weight given in the breed standard.
* A Moderate Amstaff is the ideal type. It is a blending of bull and terrier, with the strength and musculature of the bulldog, and the grace and agility of the terrier.
But the Standard calls for approximate height and weights we hear you saying. Most people when given approximate costs for an item, they expect that cost to be very close if not exactly the approximate given, the same goes for Amstaffs. The Standard was written to describe the ideal Amstaff, approximately 46-48 cms (18 to 19 inches) and 21.75-27.2 kgs (48-60 Ibs) for dogs, with bi***es 43-46 cms (17 to 18 inches) and 19.0-25.0 kgs (42-55 Ibs). These are the proportions that should be considered preferable.
