SAVE THE SPIX’S MACAW FROM A SECOND EXTINCTION!!

The Spix’s macaw went extinct in the wild in 2000, but thanks to international breeding programs, the first successful reintroduction took place in Brazil in 2022. The released birds began breeding in the wild, a huge conservation success.

Recently, however, a wild chick showed abnormal feathering and tested positive for circovirus (PBFD). Although some birds in the release aviary also tested positive, subsequent tests showed most remained healthy, some reverted to negative, and no birds have died. Sequencing confirmed the virus strain comes from Brazil, not from Europe where the reintroduced birds were bred. Circovirus has existed in Brazil for decades in both wild and captive birds.

Despite this, Brazilian authorities (ICMBio) have reacted by:
1. Demanding testing every 15 days and euthanasia after two positives—contrary to scientific consensus.
2. Proposing to capture all wild Spix’s macaws, which would effectively make the species extinct in the wild again.

All the scientific community argues these measures are unnecessary, unscientific, and politically motivated. The virus is already present in Brazil, and removing only Spix’s macaws would not eliminate it. Instead, it would destroy years of progress, damage trust with local communities, and endanger the species permanently!

Cliff parakeet (Myiopsitta luchsi) is closely related to Monk parakeet but lives in a different habitat and has a peculiar behavior.
This parrot is extremely rare in captivity with very few pairs in Europe!
Health check is essential for such rare birds in order to preserve the species!

Few days ago at rescue center we perform a delicate orthopedic surgery in a one month old deer.
The surgery goes well, now he starts physiotherapy treatment and we hope to be able to release him back to wild.

Una delicata chirurgia per una frattura di femore in questo giovane cervo arrivato al centro di recupero. Fortunatamente la procedura chirurgica è riuscita e ora gli aspetta un periodo di fisioterapia prima di un possibile ritorno in natura…
