THE TRAITS OF A GOOD PET FOOD

Since it would be difficult to personally visit each and every manufacturing plant of dog food, here is a list of some specific traits that you should look for in a particular brand or product. Remember that these are just some basic guidelines and you can add other traits that you think are needed to feed your pet.

It should have a named meat source as its first ingredient – This is definitely one of the most important things to look for when buying dog food since dogs are mostly carnivorous, meaning, your dog requires a lot more meat than anything else. A pet food product that identifies the source of meat or meat meal as the leading ingredient means that it contains a high quality protein source for its product.
Brands that only state “meat, meat and bone meal, or meat meal” as its first ingredient can only mean that the quality of the meat can be questionable. This is due to the fact that even animals that are road kill or those that have died of diseases can actually be included as a meat source in pet food. This is definitely not one of those things that a pet owner should be looking for. Meat and bone meal as well is defined by the AAFCO as rendered products from mammals that include manure, blood, hooves, and horns.
But “beef” or “chicken” meat includes the higher quality muscle meats as well as various organ meats exclusive of entrails, heads, or feathers which denotes a higher and even safer source of protein.

It must contain a higher quality source of carbohydrates – There are some people who are opposed to providing carbohydrates in their pet’s diet but if you are going to look at wild dogs, you will see that they do eat grass, vegetables, and even the undigested plant food in the stomachs of their prey. Aside from that, plant food also supplies micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and enzymes to your pet’s body.
If a dog food product should contain carbohydrates though, it should come from high quality sources such as rice, barley, and potatoes. A lot of manufacturers opt for the cheaper sources such as corn, wheat, and soy in order to boost profits when dogs cannot actually assimilate these types of grains. A lot of the times, those which are used for dog food manufacturing are those which have been treated with GMO or had been rejected or refused for human consumption. Grains should also never be the first ingredient in the product.

It should contain just the right amount of fat for your dog – Now regarding this component, it can be quite difficult to determine just how much fat is suitable for your dog without the help of a veterinarian. More active dogs will require fat higher than the recommended 18% while sedentary one will need something lower.
Fat is necessary for the metabolism of fat-soluble vitamins as well as in your dog’s hydration. If you can see a named fat source in the ingredient’s list then that will be better as well with an indicated natural preservative for the fat such as Vitamin A or E.
As much as possible, the ingredients should come from local sources – This helps to ensure that they are fresh when they prepared although the processing of these ingredients can definitely affect nutrient content of the finished product. But what is good about it though, is that you get a higher quality dog food compared to that which has its ingredients come in frozen form or other preserved form.
Aside from that, it also helps to make sure that the standards of quality and safety inspections are quite well-known especially compared to those that are manufactured in other countries where the government does not have direct access to actual manufacturing standards.

Look for a company with good manufacturing principles – This trait means that the company or brand that you must select is one that really focuses on dog’s nutritional needs and not one that is profit-driven only.

There are a lot of dog food manufacturers whose founders have been dog lovers themselves or are veterinarians who aimed at providing high quality pet foods in the past but have somehow lost that goal after being purchased by a larger more “commercially” mind corporation. This is something that you should look out for. This step requires you to do some background research on the companies that you are contemplating to buy products from.
Find out about recalls of their products as well as the related issues that have been attached to them such as poor quality or inspection practices in the plant.
There are still a lot of traits that one can look for in a pet food company but these are some of the most important things to look out for. You can include the overall resources of the company such as funding for research, quality of plant equipment, as well as capacity to purchase high quality ingredients from the market.

How Do You Train a Dog to Guard Your House?
Most people expect a dog to naturally guard their house. Some dogs, however, have been taught that strangers coming over are a cause for celebration and will be happy to greet almost anyone.

The majority of dogs will eventually learn to guard a house but may need a little help. A dog trained only to guard his house does not need to be as well trained as a personal protection dog. There are some basics you need to work on, however. This article will outline what you need to do.

Some pets are naturally good guard dogs.

Training Your Dog to Guard Your House
Teach your dog basic obedience: If you have a yard you can work in, you should use it for training. He will become more territorial as he learns to obey your commands while working in that area. Be sure to teach basic commands like sit, down, stay, leave it, and you should also teach him to bark on command.

Part of his more advanced obedience training should include teaching impulse control: When you have a visitor he should sit on command, lie down, then watch as the person comes in; teach impulse control so that he does not have to run over, jump up, and try to play.

Run the property boundaries with your dog: You should do this every day at the end of your obedience lessons. Your dog will learn his territory and be familiar with the land he should be protecting.

Leave your dog alone in the area he needs to guard: When your dog is trained and old enough to be confident (usually about 8 months for most dogs) start teaching him to guard the house.

Have someone come up and make some noise: If you have left him in the front yard, for example, the person can come up and knock on the fence. If he is in the house, the person should come up and knock on a window. This needs to be a person that the dog is not familiar with. (If your dog smells the person and it is someone he knows the training session will be of no benefit.)

When the dog approaches and barks, the person needs to make a sound like they are frightened and runoff: All you are doing at this point is increasing the dog's confidence. If the person reports that the dog walked up to the fence with tail wagging and did not bark or show any other signs of guarding his territory, you can try this again.

Keep practicing every day. When the dog is barking at the stranger you should do this again when you are in the house: When the person makes a noise and runs off, go outside and praise the dog and then give him a special treat.

To help your dog focus on the job, let the “stranger” introduce some distractions: You can be sitting a fair distance away when these distractions are introduced. Start with a piece of meat: when your dog stops barking and goes to investigate, order him to “leave it.” Be sure to try everything that your dog is always distracted by. When he ignores the distraction and returns to guarding the house, you have reached a whole new level! Give him plenty of praise and a special treat.

If your dog is showing fear when the “stranger” approaches and makes noise, you are probably taking things too fast for your dog. Try the exercise again the next day, with a different stranger.

SIMPLE IS BETTER
Commands should be short, easy and consistent. The most commonly used dog commands are:

Watch me
Sit
Stay
Down (which means “lie down”)
Off (which means “get off of me” or “get off the furniture”)
Stand
Come
Heel (which means “walk close to my side”)
Leave it
4
In the end, the words and hand signals you choose are up to you. But for success you must use the same verbal and hand cues each time for your dog to have the best chance of understanding and following your requests. Training is most successful when the humans agree on the words chosen, hand gestures you’ll use, and even the way you stand or hold the leash during training.

HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD GUARD DOG

Dogs are loyal creatures that respond well to training. With the smallest amount of effort you can teach them to do amazing things.

Spotting what makes a good guard dog isn’t that difficult. Get to know their temperament during the initial training phase and this certainly helps. In particular, look for certain characteristics to establish whether they will be effective or not when put to the test out in the field.

Here are some of the characteristics to watch out for.

Playful Nature

Look for a playful pup that likes nothing better than fetching balls, catching a frisbee or playing tug of war with their favourite rope toy. Guard dogs love to play, not only does this make the training fun, it produces a security dog that’s eager to go to work.

High Concentration Levels

Try to train a dog that gets distracted easily and this could be a recipe for disaster. Professional guard dogs possess high levels of concentration. They remain alert at all times and they are ready to respond to their handler, in any given situation.

Responsive Nature

Dogs that are destined to work in the security field need to respond well to their handlers. You can tell how responsive a dog is during the training stage. If they are keen, pay attention to you and react well to commands, they’ve got a good temperament for the security business.

Willingness to Work

Guard dogs are generally eager to please their handlers. They have energy and drive, and also possess a genuine willingness to work. If a dog shows signs of laziness, or they seem disinterested in certain tasks during the training period, there’s a good chance they won’t cut it as a team player.

Eric Letendre says:

A dog that barks and barks can
make you crazy.

Here are some tips to help you
out:

1. Exercise - Sleeping dogs don’t
bark.

2. Remove attention - Many dogs
bark because it gets the owner’s
attention.

3. Push ups - Dog starts barking
give your dog the command sit quickly
followed by down. Back up to sit and
then into a down, push ups.

4. Negative consequence - Sq**rt
bottles are very popular but are
usually used the wrong way.

If you keep sq**rting a dog with water
the dog will eventually become
desensitized to the water and the
effect will not work.

The trick to using a sq**rt bottle is
to pair it with a word. When you teach
a dog to sit you follow a simple ABC
formula.

You give what’s called an antecedent,
wait for the behavior and then apply
the consequence.

So to teach a sit it goes like this:

A - antecedent: Give the command "Sit."

B - behavior: The dog either does the sit
command or ignores it.

C - consequence: Let’s say your dog goes
into the sit position, you apply a
consequence by giving a treat for sitting.

This formula has to be followed when using
the sq**rt bottle.

You have to give the antecedent "Quiet."

Wait to see if the dog stops barking (which
most dogs won’t in the beginning).

You then apply the consequence which would
be a blast of water which most dogs hate.

The reason for following this formula is
that you want your dog to learn the word
"Quiet."

If you closely follow this formula within a
few days you’ll be able to say "Quiet" without
having to apply a negative consequence.

Eric Letendre ensuring your dog is welcome anywhere:

One of the main reasons we love dogs
is also one of the big reasons people
don’t want dogs around.

The relationship between humans and
dogs is long. I think without a doubt
the main reason we love dogs so much
is because they love us more than we
love ourselves.

Think of anyone or any animal in your
life other than a dog that greets you
the way your dog does.

You walk into the house and your dog
absolutely blows a gasket saying hello
to you.

Their entire body shakes, the tail is
wagging, they jump up and down, bark
and think you are the greatest thing
since sliced bagels.

And if you leave and come back five
minutes later, they do it all over
again.

You may not mind your dog jumping and
greeting you this enthusiastically but
other people will not be as thrilled
with this as you are.

I have met plenty of dog lovers that
do not mind when their dogs jump on
them but do not like other dogs doing
the same.

One of the best behaviors to teach
your dog is to greet politely.

This just means training your dog to
keep all four on the floor when a guest
comes over.

It is not too difficult and if you do
this your dog will be welcome most
places you go.

The time to start teaching this is when
they are pups.

If your dog is no longer a pup then you
have to institute a "no jump" policy with
family and friends and this can be
difficult because some people do like
their dogs to jump up to greet.

What’s important to understand is that it
is very unfair to the dog if he is allowed
to jump one day and punished the next.

20/11/2013

Eric Letendre provides a solution for dog jumping:

IGNORE!!!

This really is the perfect way to
deal with jumping but it can be hard
to completely ignore your dog when
you have nice clothes on that you
don’t want stained.

To stand there and completely ignore
is difficult.

So when you practice this technique,
make sure you have your grungy clothes
on.

You also have to completely ignore
which means no talking, no touching
AND no looking.

All three are forms of attention and
this will not work if you do any of
them.

20/11/2013

Eric Letendre explaining the MUTT system:

Here’s how it works:

M - Manage your dog’s behavior.

Management of behavior is what you do
short term. A crate, leash or baby gates
are all management tools to contain your
dog in an area where he or she can’t do
the undesired behavior.

U- Underlying behavior.

This is a big one. In order to solve any
problem, you have to find out the reason
for the behavior. Digging could result
from your dog being hot, frustrated,
nesting, burying items, looking for
varmints, boredom, etc.

Once you discover the reason for the
digging, you can take the right steps.

T - Training.

Train your dog to do a different
behavior or to stop it altogether.

T - Time.

Changing behavior takes time and every
dog is different so your dog may learn
fast or may require a little more time.

Eric Letendre Says:

I've made some huge mistakes in my life.

I've made some big dog training mistakes,
especially when I was first starting out.

Some were taught to me by other dog
trainers and I still see a lot of the
same mistakes being made today.

Let me share what they are so you can
avoid them:

1. Don’t train until your dog is six
months old - WORST training advice ever.

Start young, socialize, train and have
fun with your pup.

2. Never let your dog sleep on the
bed - Why?

If you don’t mind, I don’t mind. It’s
up to each owner to decide if they are
okay with their dog on the bed.

3. Never use food to train. Silliest
advice ever. We all work for food. We
just get paid in the form of money that
allows us to go buy the food.

4. Always use a choke chain. Choke
chains should be banned - end of
discussion.

5. Rub your dog’s nose in the mess when
they go in the house. This teaches the
dog that humans are crazy and to never,
ever go p*e or p**p in their presence.

It’s the #1 reason I hear: "I take my
dog outside for a long time and he won’t
go."

7. Never play tug games. Tug games are
great. You need to follow a few rules,
but it is a great game to play with you
dog.

There you have it. The big blunders to
avoid with your dog.

30/08/2013

Eric Letendre on Myths of Dog Training:

There are many, many myths about dog training
and behavior. Some of them have been floating
around for years and have become fact to many
people.

Here are some of the most popular myths:

Tug O War is bad - Tug is good. Dogs love to
play tug.

As long as you play with some simple rules, tug
is one of the best games you could ever play
with your dog. You can use the game as a reward.

Never let the dog go through the door before
you - This one always makes me laugh.

The conventional wisdom from "TV experts" is that
if the dog goes through the door before you the
dog will learn to become Alpha.

Complete lunacy.

Your dog is excited. They want to get outside because
that is where the fun is. Now, you should still teach
your dog to "wait" but it has nothing to do with being
alpha.

You should always eat first - Another hysterical myth.

The experts also inform us that if your dog eats before
you do they will learn that they are higher in the pack.

It does not matter when your dog eats.

Before, after, during, it does not matter. What does
matter is you having your dog do a quick stay command
before your dog gets his food.

This will teach your dog that you are in control.

Never let your dog sleep on your bed - Why? Why not?

Dogs are social animals. They tend to sleep very close
to each other. I've let my dogs sleep on my beds, I
allow them on the furniture.

What is important is that your dog understands that
you control the sleeping areas.

Alpha roll over - Single worst advice for dog owners.

The alpha rollover is when you grab your dog by the
neck and flip him on his back.

Very dangerous, very confusing to the dog and a very
bad technique to use on your dog.

Eric Letendre on handling dog distractions:

Most of you know by now how much I HATED
school.

I would show up and spend most of the day
trying to figure out what classes to skip
without getting caught.

I wasn't too good at it and spent a lot
of time in detention.

My biggest problem was being distracted.

I really couldn't focus on school work
until I met Mr. Wooldrige. He was a science
teacher that could take any subject and
turn it into a fascinating topic.

For example: Do you know what a bolus is?

A bolus is a mass of food that has been
chewed to the point that it can be swallowed
and digestion can continue.

Bolus is a Latin word for ball.

Mr. Wooldrige taught me this in eighth grade
and I still remember that and many other
lessons.

A truly gifted teacher.

Anyway, one of the most popular questions I
get every week has to do with distractions.

"My dog won’t come when called because he is
distracted," write many subscribers.

Luckily, you read this hard hitting, highly
entertaining, riveting update every day because
today you are going to learn the "secret" to
dealing with the distracted dog.

Basically you only need to understand this:

When training your dog to work through
distractions, you need to either control the
dog or control the environment.

It’s as simple as that.

To teach your dog to work around distractions,
you need to either have control of the
distraction or control your dog.

If your dog is distracted by tennis balls, you
need to have a friend control the bouncing so
your dog CAN’T get the ball or the distraction
will get worse.

The dog only gets the ball after the command
has been completed.

Make sense?

Or if your friend is not around, you need to be
able to control your dog.

This would be done with a long line. The long
line would give you control from a distance and
get your dog to "follow through" with the
command.

And of course, it will take some repetition by
practicing a few times a day for a week or two.

Either way, your dog can learn to work through
distractions.

03/08/2013

Eric Letendre:

Okay, my apologies to Gandhi.

He originally said:

"You must be the change you wish to see
in the world."

Very true.

And it struck me that his quote completely
applies to having a dog.

You see, your dog comes into the house as
a dog.

Dogs do things we don’t like.

We don’t like them p**ping on the carpet,
chewing our shoes, digging holes in the
yard, stealing food off the counter and
a whole list of other behaviors that could
fill a page.

In order to stop these behaviors we have
to step in and...
..TRAIN!

We Must Be The Change You Wish To See In
Your Dog.

The dog only changes once we take the steps
to learn how to help him change his
behaviors.

We have to learn how to train dogs and
here’s the rub:

There are many different philosophies and
opinions about the best way to train.

This leads to confusion for the new dog
owner.

So I am here to help because there are a
lot of great trainers on TV and the
internet and there are a lot of bad
trainers.

Good trainers are people focused.

Bad trainers are dog focused.

I focus on the owner. I teach the owner to
think like the dog, because the dog will
never learn to think like a human.

Bad trainers focus on the dog.

They blame the dog and punish.

They will use force and get angry.

01/08/2013

Eric Letendre on Leash Walking:

Watching a friend's dog for a few days.

She’s a beautiful Australian Shepherd
and walks well on leash.

Leash walking, in my humble but accurate
opinion, is one of the more difficult
commands to teach.

Your dog has to learn how to slow down
and walk at a slower sp*ed, he has to
pay attention to your direction and
resist the urge to go where she wants
to.

So here are five steps to help you out:

1. Give your dog some exercise before
you go for a walk. A dog that has been
inside all day is going to pull like
crazy because of pent up energy.

A quick game of tug can make it easier.

2. Get control over your dog before you
start walking. Plant your feet and get
your dog to relax a little.

Once there is some slack in the leash,
you can begin moving.

3. Teach your dog attention. Your dog does
not have to pay perfect attention to you
as you walk but should look at you when
you say her name.

4. Change directions. This is extremely
simple but one of the most effective ways
to get your dog to walk with you.

Whenever I take the leash of a dog that is
a puller, I quickly walk five to ten steps
and then reverse direction.

I walk another five to ten steps and reverse
again. Your dog will start paying attention
to you.

5. Relax - leash walking tends to make people
instantly tense which will result in
frustration. The frustration will result in
more pulling.

Anyway, if your dog pulls on leash, the above
five steps will help you.
