We would like to introduce ourself! Meet the VWHA

The Veterinary Wound Healing Association is founded after the first scientific meeting held at the Royal Veterinary College in December 1996.

We promote education and research the scientific basis and the clinical management of wounds of whatever aetiology in the veterinary sciences.

We give training courses together with national and international conferences to discuss and promote aspects of wound healing research.

The VWHA is registered as a charity by the Charity Commission of England and Wales.

From everyday wound care to advanced wound management

Are you a veterinary surgeon or experienced nurse with a passion for wound management? Or are you from the human field and interested to experience what is going on in veterinary wound healing science, or to be inspired from another point of view??

International Conference of the Veterinary Wound Healing Association (VWHA)at EWMA 2024, 2-3 May

We have organised a very interesting two day programme: Day 1 will focus on equine woundmanagement and day 2 on small animal wounds, but both days will be interesting for all veterinarians. We will present and discuss challenges we all encounter in everyday veterinary practice, such as non-healing wounds, when things go wrong, prudent use of antibiotics during wound treatment and alternatives to reduce bacterial burden.
Additionally we will talk about complicated and extensive wounds, surgical solutions and emergency cases.

2023 May 4-5th Veterinary Wound Healing Association conference within the EWMA congress in Milan

“Latest news on wound management in horses and small animals”

The way we treat wounds will influence largely the way of healing and the occurrence of complications. Two days about equine and small animal wound management will highlight challenges we all encounter in everyday veterinary practice, such as non-healing wounds,
infections, large wounds, when using antibiotics and what products? From physiologic events, we will address a variety of treatment options and how to improve the local conditions of the wound.

We will present about the use of dressings, local topical products, NPWT and laser. Additionally, we will elaborate on surgical solutions to heal wounds with skin grafting techniques and/or reconstructive surgery.

Thursday May 4 th Equine programme, including the Equine Wound Center session
Friday May 5 th Small animal programme, including short communications

Join us to learn about the practical approach to optimalize wound treatment!

Antimicrobial stewardship is more important than ever, considering the rising thread of multiresistant infections. In this context, surgeons are carrying a huge responsibility, as surgery is one of the indications were antibiotics are frequently used as prophylaxis for an event (post surgical infection) we can absolutely not predict. Considering the numer of surgeries done in veterinary medicine each year- we must carefully consider when this is warranted and when not to avoid overusage.

This discussion will hopefully shed light on what we know so far on when to give it, how to do so, when to discontinue and most importantly- to raise awareness regarding our 'blind spots'.

Looking forward to an interesting discussion!

And for those of you that cannot get wnough- be sure to visit us in Milano on May 4th and 5th at EWMA! VWHA and SCIVAC/SCIVE will be hosint two days (one on horses and one on smallies) on wound management and reconstruction again!

Jacintha M. Wilmink
DVM, PhD, Dipl RNVA

Jacintha Wilmink graduated from Veterinary School of Utrecht University in The Netherlands in 1991 and started work in equine veterinary practice in New Zealand and the Netherlands and Since 2003, she runs her own consultancy on wound management and reconstruction (“Woumarec”), focussed on the equine as well as small animals. She performs surgery in several clinics on complicated wounds and scars by applying skin grafting techniques and wound or scar reconstructions on companion animals. And she teaches wound management to veterinary students and veterinarians as well.

Her area of interest is wound management and she has developped and evaluated a new method for skin grafting in horses, i.e. the Meek micrograft technique.

She is re-elected as president in May 2015 and still performs that task with lots of enthusiasm.

Jacintha will speak about how to recognize infection in open wounds and when do we need antibiotics, VWHA 25th anniversary: where are we now and which challenges do we face and about the Wound Centre

She is competent in most aspects of the formulation, pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug interactions and appropriate dosage for most common forms of medication.

She began research into wound management products and the healing processes for humans and several animal species during the early 1980s, the research involved developing techniques for the evaluation of wound management products classified as being passive, interactive and bioactive depending on their influence within the healing cascade and relevant tissue cell culture methods to assess any cytotoxicological effects of wound management materials on the healing process for that particular wound and animal species.

Dr Cockbill's term as pharmacist member on the veterinary products committee gave her experience of the data mandated before applications from manufacturers to license new products could be considered.

Dr Cockbill will speak about the evolution of wound management products over 25 years

IMPORTANT

EWMA decided not to proceed with the Conference in Paris on 1-3 February 2022.

Despite the best intentions for bringing together the international wound community in Paris, the Covid situation has unfortunately again accelerated in France.

The EWMA Executive Committee is with our French partner organisation the SFFPC currently discussing what the next step will be.
The next weeks EWMA is investigating the options for having the conference later in 2022. Follow us for updates!
