Do you know cows can die from swallowed nails and wires?
You can save your cows from painful death and losses.
In our practice over the last decade, we have experienced a rise in death of cows from a condition called Traumatic Reticuloperitonitis(TRP) caused by ingesting nails and wires.
TRP is localized inflammation in the wall of reticulum usually due to perforation by a sharp object (for example, nail, wire) ingested by animals (ruminants)
The most common signs include; decreased ruminal motility, mild fever, poorly digested feaces, pain and inability to stand or walk and death.
Swallowed metallic objects, like nails and wires fall directly into the reticulum and can penetrate or perforate its wall causing TRP. Contractions of the reticulum aids the penetration of the wall by the foreign objects perforating the reticulum wall thus allowing leakage of ingesta and bacteria which contaminates the peritoneal cavity causing inflammation, infections and sometimes adhesions.
Oral administration of rumen magnet into the rumen is one of the most effective method of treatment and prevention of TRP.
Other recommended treatment methods may include; antimicrobial therapy and rumenotomy but may not be effective once the damage is done.
You are advised to contact the Veterinary experts to administer magnets to your valued cows to ensure safety and high productivity.
CONTINUE TO TAKE CAUTION!!! RABIES IS STILL HERE WITH US
This stray dog appeared at our clinic’s entrance on Thursday 1st December 2022. He looked weary with hypersalivation and mucoid eye and nose discharges. We examined the dog under very high biosecurity since we suspected rabies, The mucous membranes were congested and we noted difficulty in swallowing when we attempted to feed him. The Complete Blood Count showed an increased white blood cell count indicating bacterial infection which we treated for and put the dog under quarantine. We observed the dog for further development of signs and on the 3rd, day was furiously attacking objects and could not feed nor drink, on the 5th day the dog showed staggering movements upon standing. We euthanized the dog immediately and took him to Kabete Central Investigation laboratories where he was confirmed to have Rabies.
NOTE: our clinic is located in Runda and we may not know how many other dogs came into contact with this dog and therefore we urge those around Runda to ensure that their dogs are vaccinated against rabies.
Also remember that rabies is a killer viral disease to both humans and animals.
