🌟 Intern Spotlight: Becoming Rabies Educators 🌍🐾
This week, @kysa_254 members interning at @kspca completed the first two modules of the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) Rabies Educator Certificate course—taking a critical step toward creating a rabies-free Kibera.
🦠 Rabies remains a serious threat to humans and animals in Kenya, with an estimated 2,000 human deaths annually—though many cases go unreported. A confirmed rabies case in a dog in Kibera a few weeks ago reminds us that this disease is still a persistent and deadly challenge. While rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear, it is also 100% preventable.
📚 By the end of the course, KYSA members will earn their Rabies Educator Certificate, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to help close critical gaps in rabies prevention. This includes empowering Kibera residents with essential information about the importance of annual dog vaccinations, how to recognize suspect cases, ways to reduce the risk of exposure, and the steps to take after potential exposure. Ensuring that at-risk communities like Kibera have a strong general knowledge about rabies and its prevention is a vital component in the effort to eliminate dog-mediated rabies by 2030.
🙏 Thank you to @rabiesalliance for this invaluable resource! As shown in the reel, we’ve adapted the online format for offline group learning, incorporating interactive activities, group discussions, and case studies from Kibera. This approach is helping deepen understanding while equipping interns with the knowledge and skills to promote rabies prevention and facilitate community dialogue that yields practical, tailored solutions for the Kibera context.
😂 And yes, we’re clearly having fun in the process! Thankfully, being able to make a realistic drawing of a dog is not a requirement for passing the course. 😀

🐾Bhumi, Betty, and Tenko Are Ready for Their Forever Homes! 🐾
When @kysa_254 first met Bhumi (some of you might remember her as Fenty or Fennel), she was just a tiny pup with the odds stacked against her. She was weak, frail, and her eyes were full of sadness. Her best friend and littermate had just passed away, and it seemed like Bhumi might not be far behind.
Her caretakers at the time had also just found another young puppy, Betty. Betty was stronger and healthier but had started showing signs of illness too. Knowing both pups needed more help than they could provide, Bhumi and Betty’s caretakers made the loving decision to surrender them.
Thanks to this compassionate act and the combined efforts of KYSA, @kspca, and a loving foster family for Bhumi, these sweet girls have been given the second chance they deserve.
Bhumi went from a scared little pup to a thriving, happy girl in an incredible foster home—where she also found a new best friend, Tenko! These two have become inseparable and even got to meet Santa together last week. ❤️
When the KYSA team saw Bhumi for the first time in two months, our hearts nearly exploded. She was unrecognizable, save for her unique coat. The sadness and despair in her eyes had been replaced with joy, hope, and confidence. We could not be more proud of this little fighter!
And what about Betty? She has continued to thrive at KSPCA, growing into a confident, funny, and healthy pup, ready to bring love and laughter to her forever family.
Now, all three girls—Bhumi, Tenko, and Betty—are ready to find their happily ever after. Could one of them (or maybe two?!) be the newest addition to your family?
To inquire about adopting Bhumi, Tenko, or Betty, please contact the KSPCA rehoming line at 0703283701.
Let’s help Santa make their dreams come true this holiday season! 🎄🐾

🐾 Kelvin in Action: KSPCA Internship Spotlight 🐾
As part of their internships, interns at KSPCA are learning essential skills in animal care, including how to provide basic medical treatment, handle animals safely, and recognize signs of illness or injury.
In this clip, under the guidance and support of Eunice, a dedicated KSPCA staff member and amazing teacher, Kelvin gently applies ointment to a kitten’s eyes, helping treat an infection. 🐱💊
Kelvin is a natural at connecting with animals, and with the essential skills he’s developing through this internship, he’s well on his way to becoming a leader in community-based animal care and welfare in Kibera.
Thank you, @kspca for providing such valuable hands-on learning opportunities for our interns. These are the kinds of experiences that pave the way for real change in the lives of both animals and people.

Honor Blackie: Join the Movement and Don’t Forget the Boys 🐾💛
Earlier this week, we introduced you to Linus—a dog who reminded us of the suffering that intact (not neutered) male dogs in Kibera endure. His story carried a powerful message: ‘Don’t Forget the Boys!’ Fortunately, Linus is now on the road to recovery (and has been neutered), but many other intact male dogs in Kibera are not as lucky.
Blackie is one such dog. The fight that caused his injuries—and ultimately his death—was avoidable. Blackie suffered and died because he was not neutered.
In Blackie’s honor, KYSA is launching the ‘Don’t Forget the Boys’ campaign. For just KSH 3,800 (~USD 30), you can fund the neutering of a dog in Kibera and help prevent tragedies like Blackie’s.
🐶 Follow the link in bio to our M-Changa fundraising page and donate today in Blackie’s honor.
📤 Share this Reel with friends and encourage them to support.
Together, we can create a movement that honors Blackie’s life and prevents the suffering of countless dogs like him in Kibera.
💛 Please comment below if you’ve donated in Blackie’s honor and help us spread the word. Thank you.

What happened to the female dog in Linus’s story?🐕❓
Meet Bruno—while known locally by a name more common for boys, Bruno is very much a female dog and very much in heat. Thanks to KYSA volunteers, she’s now safe at our refuge, awaiting spaying (once her heat cycle ends) and a full health check at @kspca .
Bruno’s story reminds us why spaying is so important—and why neutering male dogs like Linus is equally critical to breaking the cycle of suffering of the dogs in Kibera. Together, these interventions humanely address overpopulation, prevent the spread of disease, and reduce violent fights.
For just KSH 3,800 (~USD 30), you can fund the spaying or neutering of a dog in Kibera. Watch Linus’s story in our last reel and follow the link in bio to our M-Changa fundraiser to donate today. 🐾 🙏

🐾 Don’t Forget the Boys! 🐾
Meet Linus—a powerful reminder of why neutering male dogs is so important. His story highlights the immense challenges that intact male dogs face in Kibera.
Spaying and neutering isn’t just about preventing overpopulation or easing the suffering of mama dogs and puppies—though that’s critical. It also saves lives by reducing the spread of painful diseases like transmissible venereal tumors (TVT), preventing violent and often fatal fights between male dogs, and discouraging the dangerous roaming that leads to injuries or worse. The old saying, ‘prevention is cheaper than a cure,’ couldn’t be more true. Together with @kspca , we are ready to act—but it costs money, and we need your help.
For just KSH 3,800 (~USD 30), you can fund the neutering of a dog in Kibera and help break this cycle of suffering. Follow the link in bio to our M-Changa fundraiser and donate today. Every contribution counts. 🐾
(Stay tuned for an update on the female dog you met in the reel. 💛)

🌿Kelvin Greens Kibera, One Shoe at a Time👟🌱😄
Some of you already know Kelvin, one of KYSA’s creative and dedicated volunteers! 🌿 But, did you know that along with his love for animals, Kelvin also has a passion for plants and a serious knack for upcycling? He can turn anything into a planter, and no footwear is off-limits. 😆🌱👟🌿
Kelvin’s small acts of greening aren’t just about adding beauty—they make us smile and remind us that with creativity and care, life can bloom in even the toughest places. Thanks, Kelvin, for greening Kibera one shoe at a time and for reminding us to see the potential in what’s often overlooked. 🌱👟
Let us know in the comments which of Kelvin’s shoe-turned-planter was your favorite!
