Diagnosis for Heart failure.
Xrays and ultrasounds are useful in checking for signs of heart failure especially in senior pets.
This can be accompanied by symptoms such as:
- persistent cough
-lethargy and fainting
-enlarged belly (accumulation of fluid in the abdmoninal cavity)
-Pale gums
-Exersice intolerance
- Weight loss

This is common behaviour in cats with respiratory infections. They appear to be retching( vomiting that is unproductive) which has been persistent over a span of a few days.Sneezing, nasal and eye discharge are also common symptoms.

Allergies can also cause coughing.

Hair balls also cause retching though productive. This is common in long haired cats.

Treatment for respiratory infections entails a course of antibiotics. Antihistamines and antiinflammatories can also be dispensed simultenously if seen fit.

In senior cats, persistent coughing may be symptomatic of heart failure and diagnostic test such as xrays/ultrasounds should be performed for a definitive diagnosis.

CUTANEOUS MYIASIS IN A PUPPY.

Myiasis refers to infestation of the skin by fly larvae(botflies).
While taking a blood meal, botflies lay their larvae on moist skin. The larvae secrete enzymes that digest the skin tissues making it easier for them to burrow.
Pets with pre-existing wounds and skin damage are susceptible to this type of infestation.

Before and after treatment for mange.
Mange is a skin infection caused by microscopic parasites called mites.
They borrow deep into the skin causing intense itching and thickening of the skin.

Slide 1:Mammary Gland Tumour (Breast Cancer) in Dogs
Slide 2: Xray of the Lungs to check for signs of spread(metastases) of Cancer.

Yes, dogs do get breast Cancer. It's the most common cancer (50-70%) in non-spayed ( not neutered) female dogs over 7 years of age.

It spreads rapidly approximately every 6 months.
Treatment entails surgical removal of the tumours in the affected glands and the draining lymph nodes.
Chest X-rays are taken to check for any signs of metastases in the lungs. In the event the x-rays show signs of spread of cancer, the client is advised to put the dogs to sleep as surgical intervention will have no effect on the outcome(death).

Luckily this girl is a good candidate for surgery.

Prevention

If not planning to breed your dog, please have her spayed from 6 months of age and better before the first heat cycle.
