It’s been one week since we welcomed Fyah Mummah to the farm courtesy of Martha who is also doing well. What has her one week been like at the farm?
1. She was fed on 4L of colostrum day one and safely placed in a calf pen.
2. On Day 3 she was introduced to calf pellets, water, supaphos and some hay to nibble on starting her diet plan
3. On Day 3 we applied Remoov from Atlantis life science on operation angamiza pembe.

Martha had started showing signs of refusing to feed on dairy meal so she was put on ketonex and so far mother and child are well

Calf rearing starts at birth and things often don’t go wrong, they start wrong

Huyu Sasa ako on Supaphos until the day she exits the farm. No other mineral in the course of her time with us. That’s how convenient and incredibly easy supaphos is even to the farmer

Unlike infections in the upper airways, pneumonia targets the lungs and is often the result of a downward progression from infections in the upper respiratory tract (throat, windpipe, bronchial tubes) or the failure of mechanisms designed to protect the lungs.

Pneumonia, a lower respiratory tract infection involving the lungs, is a significant health issue in livestock. Unlike infections in the upper airways,

Here are several options you can decide to use for weaning your calf:
1. Just after birth
2. After allowing the calf to get nursing once as first feeding.
3. Allowing the calf to remain with its dam for 2 to 3 days and then
separate.
4. Keeping calf with dam until milk becomes suitable to put in
the regular supply
5. At 3-4 months of age when the rumen of the calf is fully

Temperature is the utmost requirement in young chicks, especially at this time when we are experiencing adverse weather conditions. Spare your two minutes and know where you might be going wrong.

Temperature is the utmost requirement as the young chicks are unable to regulate their body temperature because they lack feathers which act as insulators.

If you are looking to Invest in sheep farming, chose a good ram above everything else.
A better ram will be the best use of your money because he is half of the genetics of the all the lambs to be born in your farm. There is a saying that goes "A ram is half the flock"

Like it or not the ewe is only half of the genetics of her own lambs. The overall genetics of the flock improve faster if you use great rams.

The ram cost varies considerably. Plan to spend KES 45,000 on a good ram.
Great rams will cost significantly more, think closer to KES 150,000-250,000 for a T5 mature ram.

One of the main reasons for infertility in a dairy herd is poor heat observation and timing.

To time insemination accurately, it is important to know when the
follicle will ovulate and release the egg from the o***y into the
oviduct. Normally a cow ovulates 24 to 30 hours after she first
stands to be mounted. A cow normally remains on standing heat
for about 12 to 15 hours. For the average cow, ovulation occurs
10 - 16 hours after it goes out of heat. It is important to
inseminate a cow at least 8 - 10 hours before ovulation because it
takes time for the s***m to reach the oviducts and also to undergo
the essential process of activation which takes six to eight hours
which is technically called capacitating fertility.
Guidelines for timing insemination are as follows: -
i. A cow seen on heat before 6am - inseminate today
ii. A cow seen on heat after 6am - inseminate tomorrow.

To answer this frequently asked question....
1. I invest in a good ram for the sole reason of breeding and producing faster growing animals that I am then able to sell for a good price.
NOTE: 𝐇𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐬𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐰𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬.
2. One ram will serve 40 ewes in a breeding window of 6 weeks. Then takes a 6 week break before coming back to serve another set of 30-40 ewes.
3. That means in one year he can sire upwards of 𝟏𝟓𝟎 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐛𝐬 granted you have as many ewes as possible to breed.
4. Assuming you lost 10% of the lambs, you still able sell 135 lambs for a minimum of 15,000 each . That translates to KES 2,025,000 annually.
