FARMING DIFFERENT FOR SAME RESULTS

MAGNETS IN COWS!

Before we arrived to this conclusion, we had lost many cows to internal injures
The minor repairs that we do in our farms put our animals in danger sometimes. Nails, or sharp metallic objects that are ingested by cows unknowingly put their lives to risk. So as farmers who care for the well being of these creatures, we put magnets in them to trap all those objects.

The silence was planting with the short rains that is appearing and disappearing.
What do you think of this maize?
What would be your approach as a farmer??(both animal and just crop).
For us we have made the decision to cut and chop for the cows and sheep.

Our 2023 champion has calved for the fourth time
Last lactation she did a peak of 52litres let's wait and learn how she'll perform this lactation.
We will try to maintain everything as it were the last lactation.

MEET TUMAINI!🥰

She's the second best producer this year 2023.
She's expected to calve down on 8th of October making it her 4th calving☺️
TUMAINI 🐄currently on a routine called STEAMING UP. and this is where you give different feeds your cow during the last trimester before she gives birth.

Proper steaming has major benefits including ease during calving down, promises good milk production after calving down, prevents some health issues to the cow and the calf.

FOSTERING

This is a new litter. The sows furrowed at night together and have been feeding the piglets well.

In pigs, this is common especially when there's lack of houses. Two pigs can furrow in one pen and help each other foster.

Not only when there's scarcity of pens, but it can be done if a sow doesn't have enough milk for her piglets, another one can come in to feed her piglets provided they have furrowed close to each other(dates)
It can also happen when a sow has miscarried near her due date, she can also feed piglets of another sow.

IF IT'S TOO DIRTY FOR YOU, IT'S DIRTY FOR YOUR ANIMALS!

Water is the major component of milk. Cows should be given water ad libitum and it should be clean water.

Water aids in digestion, helps in transportation and absorption of nutrients in an animal.

Make sure you have access to water for your animal. Try to collect and store water incase there's water shortage.

SILAGE MAKING!

We are on the last stages of preparing our silage. After harvesting, chopping and compressing ensiling is the last stage and this is how we do it.

Bags with soil are placed all round the silage and more is put on top.

No holes were dug where the silage has been put. On the surface hay was spread. It doesn't rot and when feeding the cows, the hay that was used on the surface can still be fed to the animal.

We don't practice "books" we practice what works perfect for the animals.

MEET JUNE!

gave birth to a bull which is now a cross breed between fresian and brown swiss

Immediately after birth, we let the cow "clean" the calf. After which the calf should try to stand and try to suckle. But we don't let them suckle, we separate the calf from the cow and take it to a calf pen. The cow is then milked and the colostrum is fed to the calf.
June then joins the high yield group and we monitor her feeding, milk production and physical health.
