To increase milk production, there are several factors to consider. Here are some strategies you can implement:

1. Breed selection: Choose breeds known for high milk production, such as Friesian or Ayrshire. Larger breeds generally produce more milk than smaller ones.

2. Age and parity: Keep a mix of mature cows (>6 yrs) and young cows for genetic improvement. Mature cows produce 25% more milk than young cows, and first lactation yields 25% less than 4th lactation.

3. Length of dry period: Ensure cows have an adequate dry period (>60d) before calving. A short dry period can result in lower milk production.

4. Condition of cow at calving: Maintain cows at a healthy body condition, neither excessively thin nor fat. This helps optimize milk production.

5. Frequency of milking: Consider milking cows 3 times a day instead of twice. Cows milked 3 times produce 10-25% more milk. Milking 4 times can also increase milk yield, but consider the extra labor and cost.

6. Farm layout: Optimize the layout of watering points, pasture paddocks, and the milking parlour. Minimize the distance cows need to walk, as excessive walking can drain energy needed for milk synthesis.

7. Disease management: Address diseases like mastitis, ketosis, and milk fever promptly, as they can affect milk production.

8. Feed and nutrition: Provide cows with a balanced diet rich in nutrients, especially protein and energy. Ensure cows have constant access to water and a good quality mineral mix.

9. Stage of lactation: Milk production is highest during the first two months after calving. Monitor and manage cows during this period to maximize milk yield.

Whenever thinking of poultry farming, Seven things you must need to know:

1. Market research
It is very important to critically look at the demand that needs to be met. Is there high demand for table eggs, out grower chicken or broiler meat? Most start-up farmers go by what a friend or relative or neighbouring farmer is doing and hope to reap the benefits.
It is important that you take your time to talk to clients or potential customers and listen to them. Do a survey on restaurants, hotels, open air or takeaway eateries, supermarkets and delis and collect as much data as possible.
Ask questions about seasonal trends of products that you intend to bring into the market. Sometimes your assumptions may not match your survey results or outcome, so be ready to change your original plans and make new decisions.

2. Farm location
A poultry farm can be located on any dry land anywhere in the country as it is not dependent on any weather patterns. However, the ideal location would be outskirts of urban or peri-urban cities where there is ready market for both meat and eggs. Construct your farm where there is access to all weather road, away from riparian land that experience occasional flooding and landslide.

3. Housing system
The most common housing system in this country is deep litter, where the entire floor is covered by wood shaving and the other equipment like nest boxes, feeders and drinkers are centrally located. It is best suited for all types of birds and conforms to animal welfare requirement.
The free-range type is common for Sasso chicken with a bit of housing at night and scavenging in an open enclosure. In organic farming, the chickens are most of the time on free range scavenging and are on restricted commercial feed with no use of antibiotics and any additive.

4. Demand for building
The most ideal house in this region must be open sided rectangular shaped structure, with roof made of iron sheet or locally available waterproof material. The long side of the house must be on an East-west orientation to reduce direct sunlight on the chicks.
Side walls should be 2-3 feet high made of bricks, iron sheet or block and the rest covered by wire mesh and chicken netting at 6-7 feet high. The floor could be concreted or compacted with red soil.

5. Choice of breed and supplier
If you want to keep commercial layers, choose type of breed which is hardy with low mortality rate, fast growth rates, high peak production, long peak period and good persistence (like Bovans brown). If it is for both meat and egg production, look for a breed of high feed conversion efficiency, and of good tasty and tender quality meat (like dual purpose Sasso).

6. Optimal health protection
Threats to your flock will include but not limited to protozoal and parasitic diseases, bacteria, yeast and mold and viral infections. You will need good rearing conditions that include proper brooding, temperature control, ventilation and humidity as well as quality water and adequate feed supply all the time.

Biosecurity is pivotal to your success; the premises must be highly sanitised within and around the site with limited flock visits to only authorised personnel. Vaccination schedule must be followed to the letter and must be chosen based on efficacy and administered professionally.

7. Record keeping
Anything that cannot be counted cannot be measured. Most farmers ignore the value of good record keeping. Feed being the highest production cost in poultry production, means that it must be weighed to the level of grammes fed/bird/day, and weight sampling must be done on weekly basis to establish production efficiency.

CHICKEN DROPPINGS

Chicken droppings are one of the most important things to check every time because you get to know whether your birds are healthy, or attacked by a disease. When you understand the type of droppings the chickens give out, you will be able to act imediately and prevent loses; a stitch in time saves nine. You need to maintain a close eye on your birds.

Types of Droppings and what they could mean.

√. Firm greyish with a chalky white top.
This is a normal poo. It can be greyish, brownish, green or black, depending on what the chicken eats. If it's in solid state with the white solid part, the poo is very normal.

√. Wattery diarrhoea
Could indicate high protein diets or kidney damage.

√. Clear or watery running droppings
Might be due to heat stress or, an infection with Infectious bronchitis .

√. Blood and mucous in stool
Coccidiosis

√. Yellow or green droppings with pasting of vent feathers
Likely caused by Fowl typhoid.

√. Greenish diarrhoea
Could be Newcastle disease.

√. Whitish pasty diarrhea
Infection with Infectious Bursal Disease (Gumboro disease).

√. White milky running stool
Infectious Bursal Disease

√. Yellow and foaming droppings
Worms or early signs of coccidiosis.

√. Brown diarrhea
Could be E. coli or Infectious bronchitis.

√. Worms in stool
Presence of internal parasites (worms).

An Aeroplane cleaner was cleaning the Pilot's cockpit, when he saw a book titled, "HOW TO FLY AN AEROPLANE FOR BEGINNERS (Volume 1)

He opened the first (1st) page which said: "To start the engine, press the red button...". He did so, and the airplane engine started...

He was happy and opened the next page...:
"To get the airplane moving, press the blue button... "He did so, and the plane started moving at an amazing speed...

He wanted to fly, so he opened the third (3rd) page which said: To let the airplane fly, please press the green button... "He did so and the plane started to fly...

He was excited...!!

After twenty (20) minutes of flying, he was satisfied, and wanted to land, so he decided to go to the fourth (4th) page... and page four (4) says; "To be able to know how to land a plane, please purchase Volume 2 at the nearest bookshop!"

A man established a zoo and made the entrance fee 300$ but no one went there. He reduced it to 200$ but still no one came.
He then reduced the fee to 10$ but still people didn't come.
Finally, he made it FREE entrance and soon, the zoo was filled with people. Then he quietly locked the gate of the zoo, set the lions free and made the exit fee 500$ and everyone paid!

When a group of tourists visited a crocodile farm, the owner of the place launched a daring proposal;
-Whoever dares to jump, swim to shore and survive, I will give 1 million dollars.

Nobody dared to move, suddenly a man jumped into the water and desperately swam towards the shore while he was chased by all the crocodiles.

With great luck he arrived, taking the admiration of everyone in the place, then the owner announced;
-We have a brave winner.

After collecting their reward, the couple returned to the hotel, upon arrival, the manager told him; he was very brave to jump, then the man said;
-I didn't jump, someone pushed me!

His wife smiled ...

*THERE IS TOMORROW*

Whenever you are dealing with people, you must always remember that there is tomorrow and you might néed them tomorrow.

You may end up needing help from the people who are asking for your help today, so help as much as you can.

Life is like moving wheel, sometimes you are up and sometimes you are down. Sometimes we destroy the bridges that we might need to help us cross back tomorrow.

Sometimes we treat people as though there is never going to be tomorrow. We sometimes act as though we will never need help from anyone. Remember there's tomorrow.

Joseph helped the cupbearer in prison and later the cupbearer connected Joseph with Pharaoh. Imagine how Portiphar's wife felt when she heard that Joseph was now the Governor of Egypt, after she had falsely accused him.

The brother who sold Joseph away ended up being fed by him. Don't ever think of going to the extreme with your offenders, they might be rescuers tomorrow. Always remember that there is tomorrow and it will surely come.

The little help you give to people today, will profit you tomorrow.

May the good Lord touch your heart to live your life knowing that there is tomorrow.
