Calf Rearing Series
Calf rearing is crucial for ensuring healthy, productive cows in the future
It requires proper feeding, housing, and disease management to ensure healthy growth. Newborn calves must receive colostrum within the first two hours of birth and continue for at least three days for immunity. Feed whole milk or milk replacer for 8–12 weeks, providing 2–4 litres per feeding, and introduce calf starter feed from week one to support rumen development. Clean water should always be available. Housing should be clean, dry, and well-ventilated to prevent diseases, with proper bedding and separation of sick calves. Disease prevention includes vaccinations, deworming from three weeks old, and monitoring for issues like diarrhoea and pneumonia. Weaning should be gradual at 8–12 weeks when the calf consumes at least 1kg of solid feed. Regular monitoring of growth and body condition is essential for a strong, productive animal.
