The Weedy Scorpionfish is a master of disguise, blending perfectly into its surroundings. 🐠🌿 It’s also venomous and might yawn when a camera gets too close—possibly to intimidate or communicate!
Master of Disguise 🥷
This fish is a camouflage expert, blending seamlessly into seaweed and algae. Its fleshy tentacles and irregular body shape make it nearly invisible in its natural habitat, which ranges from South Africa to the Coral Triangle. 🪸
Unique Movement 🦶
The Weedy Scorpionfish doesn’t swim like other fish. It lacks a swim bladder, so it crawls along the seafloor using its pectoral and pelvic fins, only swimming when necessary. 🌊🐾 This adds to its eerie appearance as it moves through the reefs.
Venomous Predator 🕷️
As part of the scorpionfish family, this species is highly venomous. Sharp dorsal spines deliver its venom, making it a dangerous predator that hunts at night. 🌑🦐 It ambushes prey with a quick gape and suck motion—better to admire from afar!
Mating Behavior 🤔
During mating, males perform an elaborate dance to attract females. 💃 After this, both the eggs and sperm are released into the water column, where fertilization occurs. 🌊

I found this small colony of Camelback Shrimps living an unlikely haven; the borehole of a concrete mooring line block at about 20m depth.
It is not uncommon to find these huge concrete blocks at dive sites, often weighing upwards of 1 tonne and measuring several metres across, as commercial boats use them to tie-off rather than drop an anchor. It’s much safer for boats and divers alike, as well as the reef itself.
Why I mention this is that you might be surprised to learn that they are one of my favourite features to explore underwater, as the blocks provide a rare and valuable barrier to the Ocean’s swell and current, that attracts many types of marine critters.
Being a lazy scuba diver and macro video addict… I love resting ‘downwind’ in the lee of the concrete blocks, where I am protected from the Ocean current without having to swim anywhere, and know that I can keep the camera steady if I find something cool.
And there are plenty of marine critters who are just as lazy as me, taking it easy in their little concrete caves 🧱

💅 Much like humans have nails to protect our toes & fingers, octopuses have a fingernail-like chitinous cuticle that serves as a protective lining for each of their suckers!
📲 kinda like how you can put a screen protector on your phone to prevent scratches— The chitinous cuticle acts like a built-in screen protector for each sucker!!!
When the cuticle becomes worn out, the octopus flips on self cleaning mode, swirling its arms to peel away the outer layer of skin, leaving behind “sucker confetti” that float around like lil’ lily pads. 🎉🎉🎉
💅 This isn’t just a beauty regimen—it’s an important activity that improves their grip on objects and enhances their tasting and smelling abilities!
Much like a chef sharpening his knives or a musician tuning their instrument, the octopus has gotta ensure its tools (their hundreds of suckers) are in tip top condition! 🔘🔘🔘🥰🐙
