A dog's nails are part of their anatomy. And unlike their feline counter-parts who use their nails for weapons, dog's nails are used for traction and increasing speed. The nails grip to the ground when they run, increasing speed.

If your dog does a lot of running or walking outdoors, you may notice that their nails may be relatively short. However, regardless of your dog's lifestyle it's important to check their nails weekly.

Having long nails changes a dog's posture and the way they carry themselves. The un-natural angle causes joint stress and can lead to pain and arthritis.

Ladies, that's like wearing heels constantly. And not your tried and true comfortable pair. We're talking stiff and painful.

Long nails change the natural alignment of the leg bones, adding torque and twisting to the joints.

When we change the natural alignment of our dogs we see increased problems with stability and steadiness. Again, compare how we perform in sneakers versus heels ladies.

However, the damage doesn't stop at the ankle joints. It continues up to the spine and throughout the dog's body.

For example if you injure your left leg, you will probably bear most of your weight on your right leg. This may cause some soreness and stress on your right leg. Same goes for our dogs.

So remember, nail trimming is not merely a cosmetic issue, but a huge health factor.
