🌀Hurricane Safety Tips🌪️: Anxiety can significantly alter pet behavior. For instance, some dogs may refuse to move when it's time to go outside during a storm. They can sense severe weather and struggle to leave their comfort zone.
Animals are creatures of habit and typically dislike change. Going to a shelter can be very stressful for them. To help ease this stress, take your pet in a carrier with items that have familiar scents, such as a piece of clothing with your smell or a favorite blanket. Having their owner’s scent nearby can help them feel more relaxed.
After the storm, double check your pets are secure either inside, on a leash, or within a fenced yard. Storms can alter familiar landmarks and scents, causing pets to become disoriented and feel lost if they wander off.
The trauma of a storm can also have lasting effects on pet behavior. Dogs that are usually placid and friendly may become aggressive or defensive. Monitor your pet’s behavior closely and try to maintain as normal a routine as possible once the storm has passed.
